How to Create a Transparent Gradient in GIMP
In this GIMP Basics tutorial, I show you how to add a transparent gradient to your image or composition! This is a very easy technique that requires some of GIMP's built-in tools and features, including the gradient tool and layer mask.
Once you've created the transparent gradient effect, you can then export the image with the transparent gradient - which I also show you how to do in this tutorial. So, this is a sort-of bonus two-for-one video! You will learn how to export the photo to a PNG, which supports transparent backgrounds.
GIMP is a free photo editor most similar to Photoshop or Affinity Photo.
0:00 - Intro
0:27 - Open a Photo Into GIMP

4:50 - Apply the Gradient
5:26 - Export Image with Transparency (PNG, GIF, TIF, WebP)

As I mentioned in the tutorial, you can export to transparency using the following file formats: PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, BMP - all are available for exporting in GIMP.

I'm wondering if this effect can be used, for instance, like on the circle you sometimes use to bring yourself upon the video. But instead of a hard borderline difference between that circle and the video, can this effect be used to visually blend your circle's border into the video? Because I assume you're using a 16x9 transparency with a circle cut-out in it. I'm not sure if I'm making sense.
Perfect speed of instruction. I can follow along without having to go back or feeling like I'm waiting for the next step. Thanks!
Very helpful and super simple to the point very much appreciated
It's great that GIMP has effectively the same lingua franca workglow found in most every other graphics editor. Transition away from Adobe is so much easier as a result.
Thank you, Michael. Have a great day!

Thank's for the tutorial.
thank you for all your videos!
Great video, thank you man!
Love this lesson. I follow the Presentation Zen slide design popularized by Garr Reynolds. It uses far fewer words and visuals that supports attention and memory. Many of his word or number slides have the number in a solid area with a picture to the left that fades out towards the text. Finally a way to do this with open source 🥂👍🏽
Perfect tuto thanks!
love your work, your very inspiring and never stop! 👏
THANKS FOR SHARING.
Nice! Saved my day!
Thank you, i forgot how to do this simple task and you made it look easy yet again! Thank you so much for this video Keep It Up
This guy is like Nerdy Cpt. America… except he saved my thumbnail 😂 New viewer!
Just want to point out here that you can do this with the "Mode" setting at the top of the "Gradient" tool - if you set it to "Erase" you can drag a "FG to Transparent" gradient across any picture without extra layers and it'll do exactly what you want here. (Assuming the image has a transparency channel)

Much better!!. The video completely misses the point. Having both an alpha channel and a layer mask is a redundancy, one is enough to create a transparent gradient . Not to say the chosen example is so artificial

nice tutorial
Hello Michael, as always video Top. 🔝👏👏💥👍A big hello.😉👍
Nice detail video Good to see that gimp vs ps transform one when ps got glitchy you dont do jump cut Some tools in Ps is not very user friendly like vanishing point and generate image asset For starter most got not much idea how it works
Please do a GIMP tutorial with text and geometric figures.
Can I have multiple gradient lines? Let's say I want to do the same for the left side?
I often run into a specific issue with GIMP, and want to know whether you can help me with this. When selecting for color while having a specific layer selected, GIMP selects the colors of all the other layers as well, so when I want to change a specific color to a color-gradient, the gradient will then extend to the selected color in the entire image, instead of only the layer I want to have it in.
Hi Davis ! GREAT tutos as usual... I did a blunder in GIMP and don't know how to revert it : When selecting a tool, a tool property (options) floating window of that tool pops up. I once got rid of one such popup window by "X" it on the top right system bar and now, I don't have ANY popup tool property windows that shows. How do we configure this to show ?
Can you do split gradient where in the middle it's more visible and on either end it's transparent?
Or select the region and choose "BG (or FG) to Transparency) in the tool settings of the gradient tool.
i feel stupid for not knowing this simple trick. thanks davies 🙏
Perfect length - my GIMP just doesnt go to transparency but to black/white with how you are showing it, must be me tho
In my GIMP 2.10.18 I have to switch colors to get this effect, otherwise i have transparent from left to right side.
Hi there, I am struggling to create multiple designs of an original design in order to only change some aspects of the design for POD purposes. Please help.
Thanks a lot. Its a wonderful tutorial. Can we save png with transparent back ground?

@@DaviesMediaDesign I believe in some tutorial, it was mentioned that if we save png, GIMP will add a background and not a transparent back ground. I try to save and see. Thanks again

PNG is the only file type that will preserve transparency. In some places like Windows explorer it will look like it doesn’t have transparency, but it does.

Can you add the gradient effect at any direction?
@DaviesMediaDesign
Жыл бұрын
Yes
it's good but when you say stuff like "add alpha channel" you need to explain why and what an alpha channel is in relation to the gradient transparency project
2:24 This action does nothing for me except leave the little line with pluses.
I can't completely remove the background your way. After doing so, there is still a blurry background image .I use GIMP 2.10.32

Make sure you are using true black on the layer mask and not just a dark gray. Gray will create partial transparency whereas black creates full transparency. Hex code for black is #000000

@@DaviesMediaDesignI use code 000000 and ffffff but It not full tranparency. Is the problem likely somewhere else?
@DaviesMediaDesign
Жыл бұрын
@@phamthanhtien4434 you could have the opacity slider for the gradient tool turned down in the tool options. If it's less than 100 it will affect the transparency.

@@DaviesMediaDesign It's 100. I think there is some default of mine that is different from yours, so I can't get the result like in the your video.

I don’t think tiff and BMP support transparency.
Okay, but WHY would we want to do this?

If you add the photo for some other purpose to a variety of coloured backgrounds , the transparency fading will be fading into different colours
