GIMP Photo Editing: Create a Photo Blend with the Gradient Tool

In this GIMP 2.10 beginners tutorial, I show you how to blend two photos together using the gradient tool and a layer mask. This is a simple technique that can produce great effects with multiple images, allowing for one image to transition smoothly into the next. I also go over how to use the scale tool and move tool to get your images to match up in size and create the best composition.
I recommend this tutorial for beginner photo editors or photographers, though any GIMP users will find it useful!

Today was the second time in a few months that I wanted to do this operation. Thanks to your video, I was able to do it both times. But, even having it done one previous time, I had to watch your video again and follow it step after step. GIMP is very powerful, but is definitely not designed to be user friendly in any way. Thanks again for the help.

This comment hits how I feel about GIMP lol. It’s a very powerful program but it’s very complicated at times to point where I just lose interest in using it.

Not computer savvy at all, I've been struggling to learn GIMP for years. Downloaded and uninstalled at least three times because I couldn't get the hang of it at all. Your videos are the first ever that have made sense to me and actually allowed me to learn how to use the thing. Thank you so much.

Three things: 1. Once I had my images positioned as I wanted them I would crop them to the canvas size -- especially the larger image. No reason to keep the excess image hanging around. This would be a final step for me (before saving the image as a native Gimp file). 2. The transition has a pretty hard line where the black ends... To soften it up use the Gaussian Blur filter on the layer mask. 3. You can get some interesting patterns and transitions playing with the combinations of patterns and gradients on the layer mask. Fill the layer mask with a pattern first (on all or part of the mask), then add the gradient... Even more interesting transitions. I've had hours of fun playing with this technique.

Going from Image to color is working fine for me, however the "gradual fade" aspect has stopped working and I cannot for the life of me find what setting makes the "fade" work again. I am only getting hard line image to a color, with no "fade". Any thoughts would be appreciated!! V 2.10.10

6:09 You actually don’t need to eyeball it if you look at how the x/y-axis values change while in motion. In this case, you’ll want the y-axis value to remain the same while you move the image further right. Also, aside from creating a mask, what I find is that setting the gradient to “Erase” mode and then selecting “FG to transparency” will have about the same effect. Though I suppose that since non-destructive editing is the goal here, the mask works best for this purpose.

It would be nice if you could show how to adjust the angle of the gradient like you can in pages. You don’t always want an exact horizontal or vertical gradient, in fact I would say that it would be less often to have a horizontal or vertical gradient.
