Lary Krohn wrote a great book on how to teach the language of the E Collar to the Dogs. It's a must read.

Those who follow the top rehabilitators of troubled dogs, Leerburg, and professional trainers in medium sized towns (like Richmond,VA) will learn (if they want to read) that an e-collar is NOT to punish or 'shock'. It is simply a remote way to simulate a leash tug or pull....done at a 'working level' of stimulation that is just barely felt by the dog. There is no compulsion or intimidation. Ignorant people condemn carrying a knife or handgun or pepper spray for protection. Their own fear and ignorance (the 2 are related) make them react like a fearful dog : snapping and agitated.

With your technique of using this device as a "remote tug of the leash" You will always have that device in your hand, forever. Instead, you should be linking the stim to the result of not adhearing to your voice. Same soft handed training principal, different target goal.

Thanks for the video Ty. We got our collar and have yet to use it. Going through these videos prior to starting. With the collar in this video are you using a vibrate or shock function? I've got the beep, vibrate & shock. I've heard now that starting with the shock initially then switching to vibrate after command is learned is a good method... thanks!

Our dog was a 4-week training boarding school since we have him back we were told we have to continue their tactics for another 4 weeks at home, which we weren't prepared for. We were told to remove all toys, we have a raised bed, which is his 'place' and he is supposed to be brought there and to lay down (which to me seems like all the time) if not that they want him in his crate which he obviously wasn't trained on while whereas he does not like it, so for that we use a spray citronella collar which has seemed to help in the crate with the barking. Now what level and setting would you say we use, as we have this collar and every now and then he goes back to being the stubborn Dexter that we know. Please help us.

Is it better to use a shock or vibration setting when training the dog?

It’s July 2023. I rescued a dog very similar to this 3 months ago. We have made progress, but this “chaos” you describe still rears its head. I already use an ecollar and have taught things like place. However, watching this makes so much sense. I’ll be giving this a try tomorrow!!!

I made a mistake and assumed my dog would come to me when beeped/shocked so it made him afraid whenever I put the collar on now just by doing that once. I trained him afterwards on the leash coming to me just with the beep and now he does well when it’s us but he’s so terrified of the collar, he refuses to come out of the house or car unless forced and he walks attached to my hip. He cries sometimes when I make him come with me even though I don’t shock him at all. Any suggestions on how I can fix this?

This is one of the best training videos I've seen, I enjoy the way you handle the dog. For whatever reason, this seems the most realistic for my wife and I regardless of dog size.

i have an amazing dog who normally listens very well. But when a cat is in sight he runs and does not look back or listens to commands. The problem is growing too lately. I have a park behind the house where he can roam freely and we walked here every day 3 times a day without leash. But now he knows that when i let him free he can just run back in to the neighberhood and hunt cats. Now he wears always a leash and i hate it. I want him to play and have fun. Would an E-collar help with this?

Am I correct in assuming youre using the black S? It is momentary unless the button is held down too long? What is being used in this video? what is best to begin and get results?

this is the best of all the videos I have watched on ecollar training. This trainer is so patient and kind with the dog, and still getting his desired effect.

This dog needs exercise. Walk or run. Burn off some of that energy. I rescued a 6 yr old GSD. Extremely high energy level, very apprehensive. Good long walks, teaching a focused walk, and time on the treadmill did wonders.

My dog is EXACTLY like this, and looks exactly like this dog. Behaviour is the same. I agree with others...please get to the point sooner, too much chatter.

Well done! I've watched several different methods of e-collar training, but Ty seems to understand the nuances of what the dog is thinking (right and wrong). Getting in at the dog's psychic level makes all the difference. My Greyhound's behavior is exactly like this dog, distracted, hunting, no interest in treats, etc. I think this is going to work.

I would really love to know what the exact e collar is that he is using. I love his teaching techniques and would love to give it a try on my dog

Question: I understand all dogs are a little different, but how do you know when to end the session? How long should the training session be?

I'm always training my dog on all walks but he gets breaks as we go to stop and sniff and poop etc. Generally it averages to around 20 minute continous sessions. Rewards vary for us, either praise, chicken breast/treats, or a good game of tug mixed with free time to sniff and do what he wants.

Our new rescue puppy was supposed to be a terrier and weigh maybe 12-15 pounds....she is now 8 months old and we think she might be an Irish Wolfhound....we have 2 old terriers (11 years) that she gets so rough with and runs over them and then when I am trying to play with her,, she gets play aggressive. She jumps and snaps at my face...I don't want to break her spirit, but she gets so rambunctious that the other dogs almost hide from her.....

What kind of dog is that?

so, what happens if the stim doesn't break the dog's focus? In other words, you know they feel it, they just ignore it? Do you just up the level until they finally respond to you?

Sometimes, yes. My dog has his collar on and my room mates dog didn’t on a walk today. We passed a fence with a caged dog going crazy and I had to focus on my room mates untrained dog. This made my English bull terrier get excited too and his normal level wasn’t working so I quickly tapped up a level and tried, nothing. Up two levels (8/18) and he finally broke focus on the dog and stayed by side, calmed down so I could get my room mates dog past the fence. Watch as many videos on KZread before using one.

Any particular collar? Also why dont you answer any of the questions on here?

Start low and adjust up til you get a response .

my issue is that my dog shih tzu has a problem with my 4 month old cat and gets super anxious should i do this with the cat infront? of trought a window or something?

We got our dog back in March, and she's about 5 years old now. The previous family didn't have time to take her out and were having another child, so they wanted to give her to a family who had time for her. She is our only pet right now, and we don't have any children. Prior to the family who gave it to us, she was in an animal shelter, and, before that, some other family. Needless to say, she has some separation anxiety and a few bad habits that we are trying to train out of her We've noticed she leans towards the "chaotic" end when she's outside. The situations that we have to be most weary of are kids and bikes. Kids on bikes is the worst combo. If a child comes up to her while she is outside, we aren't sure which way she will go-- apathetic or slightly aggressive-- but most of the time it is the latter. Whenever a child has any inkling of fear, she harps on that and lunges towards the child. However, there was an isolated incident once where a child wasn't even paying attention to her, and she lunged at him hitting his head. No nipping or knocking over, but we were pretty shaken after that. If we bought an e-collar, how would it be best to go about training that out of her? We don't really have any friends with kids or family members we'd feel comfortable asking to test her out/ train it out of her, and I wouldn't feel comfortable asking them to risk their kids either.

I saw this post and the answer is obvious to me (I took 3 dogs of my own thru CGC certification and learned about e-collars when they first came on the market). the answer is : get professional trainer help. A trainer or rehabilitator ((they are different, with overlap). Look at vids here by Jeff Gellman and Sean O'Shea and Tyler Muto. All 3 are top professional rehabbers who show how to use an e-collar and prong collar correctly. Don't assume.... follow professionals.

I’m having a lot of problems with contact. Would whetting the fur help make better contact? He has short hair but very dense.

Does anyone know what e-collar he’s using in the video?

I have a problem , a big one. I recently lost my place and thus Kiba has had to move into a house with five other dogs. This was not a chioce but rather I had no other options . We are upstairs and no they do not interact which is not a problem. The issue is this. Kiba has started to whine when my roommate gets up. Comes in and doesn't stop. Same with the dinner table or even the living room. He looks at them and starts to whine and grows louder and louder. I have done redirection to no avail. He is seeking their attention but here's the kicker. He's a service dog. The second we step out of the house and he's on his vest he performs with no problems . Can go to a restaurant he goes right under the table. No whining no anything . Perfect heeling but here? He is constantly whining . Every time someone comes up to our shared room. Like my roommate Kiba gets up. Whines. Breaks down stays and goes completely crazy. He has been socialized and properly greets everyone but since moving here this has been my nightmare . Any advice . Hints. Anything ?

Why arent you just training the dog to focus, instead of zapping? I have a HUSKY MIX and I did it in a week.

reward small seconds of focus and then shooting electric currents into a dog to get focus , won't be necessary. It's really simple. Behaviors that are rewarded happen more often. I'm not sure who the idiot was that decided using electricity on a sentient, thinking, being was a good idea. I guess it takes all types

It does not hurt. It feels like something different, and gives off a weird vibe. It does not damage the dog. It is liberal crybaby's like you that discourage any new types of new and useful training techniques.

I adopted pretty much the same dog with the same problems from the humane society 2 days ago. Unfortunately, we're taking her back because she's so over-protective - she wants to fight other dogs. She's only 3 . It's a sad situation.

my gf wont get it,she got a dog, after a while having her, shes gotten worse. i said we need a shock collar, and i bought a none remote she threw it away. it barks at everything its not a normal bark, its the kinda bark where its an aggressive bark, not always soft bark, small barks here and there is ok, but continuesly, and aggressively, is annoying, there is not one day she does not bark, and even it barks for no reason, you cant even have a peaceful nap in your own room, she barks, no matter what anyway, she barks when she hear the other dog walk, she barks when she even hear the (us owners talk) she barks, she literally growl, bark for no reason, as if she is hearing stuff even though its silent as death. though when she hear,squeeks,dog taps,drawers,plastic bags sounds, she will bark when you make a certain noise even in front of her, when she see you are making that noise,shes worse outside, im just telling my gf get a remote collar, havent had the dog even a year,not only that its a dog that does not want to poo on grass, but rather on our nice garden rocks,porch or koi garden rocks near the pond, she only likes to poo on hard surfaces,hardly on the grass,(this is the dumbest pomeranian i have ever seen) she doesnt always come to you when you call her name, she think she can do whatever she wants, or go ever she wants, she dont even know know how to sit, the first trick in dog history, we have another pomeranian male, he is clearlly not like that,but i seriously rather just get rid of the dog and buy a different same breed just not her....she refuses it drives be nuts. and she wants to have a baby, im not with this dog, as im trying to put the baby to sleep wakes the baby up in the middle of the night. i see this dog not changing at all and more of a nauisence then a friend,pet,family ...i can honestly say im shocked a dog can end our 11 year relationship what do you guys think(help)

Kazuki Katsuhito Spending a lot of time with her. Taking her on a leash to where she should do her business. Saying hush and making the sh sound long and softly helps calm pups. There are other videos on stopping barking dogs and yes, training classes, mine were priceless.

I would really push the collar issue. it has saved my ears when i lived with my grandparents having a Pomeranian that barked when the wind blew.lol they found a multi use collar that had vibration, beep sound and shock. didnt use the shock part and used the vibration when barking and the beep to get the dogs attention to come when called like demonstrated. so if the shock is what is worrying your partner, there are other options that dont inflict any type of pain. i use the e-collar for my german shepherd since i got her as a puppy and she trained quick, and has the obedience of a police dog with tons of love and devotion to our little family. if it is used correctly and not as a form of "punishment" it is a very useful training helper.

This man is teaching you about the electric coller what he isn't teaching you is about electric shocks and the damage electric shocks do to our cells, did you know in every life there is millions of other living thing that generates that life? I work with electricity and have been shocked accidently a number of times even lost finger nails, you know why? The Shock kill the tissues and cells around the nail and the tissue dies and finger nail falls off, it takes time for another to grow. But think it like cutting yourself deep and tissue re-growing it leaves a scare. Electricity as been used mainly for 3 things concerning humans first mental shock treatment, second turcher and thirdly the death penalty I see nothing good electricity as been used on life for only to shock the heart into beating again. Electricity is good when we use it for our appliances but what happens when it is overloaded? It fires as electricity burns and kills if used incorrectly. It is a killer and especially if you have a weak heart so using this on a dog is cruel and wrong and surprised RSPCA as allowed it, to me if I was a dog I wouldn't like anyone who shocked me it might cure one problem but in my eyes create a number of others. I have a 22 week old pup and people comments how well behaved he is, there is still work to be done he is a baby but for his age he is great. I have trained him by praise and treats and he is so obedient and his tail is always wagging and can even let him off the lead, I have not used electricity, choking collers or them spiked collers just basic training with patience and time and it is great seeing it pay off, we don't hurt those we love we show kindness and patience. I was talking to a young man on my walk because he couldn't believe how well behaved my pup was, he said he as a German Shepherd and tried everything including a shock coller and he keeps running away and had him two years, I said to him I would want to run away if you was my master because your hurting the dog. A dog will not run away if it loves you, when I have my pup in rhe park he runs towards other dogs wanting to play. If he soes I walk the opposite way and other dog owners are surprised, then I whistle and when he sees me far away he runs towards me and leaves the other dog because he knows where his bread is buttered and he loves me. I now flick my finger and he follows it some of my commands I don't always have to say them he knows when he comes to a curb he sits and does it, so if I can get all this from a dog not using mean devices so can others, with dogs its not what we know it is what we don't know willing to learn and it is great when getting positive results. Electricity used wrongly kills and in our lifes we have millions of other lifes in us so heal, for health it doesn't take much to reduce our cell structure, immune system all this is living so using electricity is weakening our structure so don't learn about the shock coller learn about electricity.

Unfortunately you are not educated in the use of a stimulation collar, the dog is not being shocked as you put it. If you work electricity and have been shocked a number of times one can only surmise, you either are a horrible electrician, Dont pay attention to what your doing. With that said, again you are uneducated on the the use of e collars, You may want to do some research before you write a long dissertation of nonsense

He's notnusing it on a high enough setting is why it's not working. A dog should begin responding very quickly and breaking out of hyper focusing with an e collar. The dog was responding to the leash, not the e collar. You could see he was pressing it and the dog completely ignored it.

Derek Smith The dog should begin to understand and at least respond to the e collar after a small amount of time. This dog was not responding to the e collar at the end of the video any better than it was at the beginning. It made no progress 🤷🏼‍♀️

Derek Smith The dogs Larry krohn works with begin to respond to the e collar very quickly without the leash if you watch his raw footage videos. He does it properly on a level that the dog actually feels.

I've been training dogs and service dogs for 36 years now I'm not at all saying that they don't work but you say in this video that the e- collar is nothing and just like an itch. If an e- collar is nothing more than an itch then I think you should try on the coller and let a random person someone who is not going to turn it off because they know you let them push the button and go through the different setting levels with it on your neck and let us see how you react to the thing you compare to an itch.

You're teaching the dog to only come with the stimulation. IMHO. Seems to me you should be teaching the dog first voice command and the negative stim when she doesn't respond. Slow and steady, yes, but with your method it doesn't seem she will ever be solely obedient to your voice command.

E collars are bad don’t use them for your dog just get a collar no shock collar a collar and harness that simple but good vid

Can this guy do anything without his little helpers?? eg. e collars, prong collars etc. A good trainer does not need cruel aids, and i dont care if people say if they are used correctly they arnt cruel, too may people will copy and use them wrong. Before you are impressed and try to copy please do some research on using them and maybe it will put you off! I would like to see this guy be able to achieve results without his mean toys like many many other trainers are perfectly able to do. Not impressed at all!

What total BULLS*T. She isn't stiff except for now when she sees something. And she wants to come when I pull her neck. He pulls her every single time. So it doesn't work with this dog but it does somewhere??? She's a unique dog who this doesn't work on so I'm going to use this dog who doesn't work for a video to tout my system. Idiot or imcompetent--either way don't experiment on my dog. turn off the sound and watch this video. There is no change or shot where the dog gets what this "dog trainer" is doing. Same from beginning to end.

An electric collar is the last thing you want to use on an anxious dog 😑

Looks to me like the comments pointing out how you don't need to shock the dog to get a great recall have been deleted. The AVSAB and the ACVB advise against trainers who use this method of training. It is not impressive that you are making the dog come to you through compulsion.

ilovecanines correct me if im wrong or misunderstanding. but is it not the same with dogs coming to you for a treat or reward with positive reinforcement training? I believe in both as there are no methods perfect for all dogs. some work well with the pr while others dont respond to it and do better with this type of training.

There are other settings besides shock . I personally took the unit apart and removed the wires for the shock component . We use the vibrate ONLY . I cut the wires to make sure NO-One shocks my puppies . If the vibrations , buzzer or light doesn't work I'll find something else . But to shock a dog to gain control is inhumane.

My dog will not work for treats or positive reinforcement. It could be a giant steak but if another dog or human caught her attention she would forget about it and run after them. She has virtually no attention span and she is desperate to meet and play with everyone. She runs into situations where she doesn't understand, not all dogs are friendly and want to play. We have 1/2 acres fenced in and she gets a lot of attention from us and visitors. She is a 2 year old rescue (terrier mix) and we have done obedience classes, made her work for everything like sitting before she goes out, laying down or shaking our hand before getting her food bowl, etc. and she just wont listen. She will run 4 houses down, look back to see us calling her and continue on. She will come if called in the house and she sometimes will inside the fence area - so she knows the command. She is quite smart but she is anxious and very high-strung. Its been months and we are still working on positive reinforcement daily and things aren't progressing. We have a large yard and we walk her 2 miles each day (she is 20 lbs) she also gets the ball thrown for her multiple times a day and we also do exercises to help her focus. What I am doing isn't working or we would be seeing progress as its been 9 months. I don't think there is just one way to train a dog. My dog will not focus or do anything when she doesn't want to so I am hoping the physical reminder will help her to remember she needs to pay attention to me. I don't plan to use the shock setting, just vibrate hopefully. I would never hurt my dog, but it has come down to me doing this, or if she gets off leash, she could be hit by a car or run up to an aggressive dog.

@Amber Dalbec I'm in exactly the same situation as yourself, in the country with a 2 year old rescue with no play drive or food motivation and no ability to focus on anything other than sheep, rabbits, dogs and people. It's a no brainer to use an ecollar to COMMUNICATE (NOT punish) with my dog to ensure a good recall so that she can't get herself run over or shot by the local farmer for chasing his sheep. I've been researching for the last month and of all the ecollar trainers, Larry Krohn (kzread.info) is amazing and is saving my dog's life.

trolled again!! where is the graduation video of this dog? I have never seen a single dog from here that had any animation at all or any level of being trained in drive , awful awful work some of the worst recalls I have ever seen ..better call the FBI and tell them your being called out!!

You talked for almost 6 minutes before doing anything and the dog got bored. I got bored. You talk to much at the beginning and need to do more teaching in your videos!!!

Do not trust this guy with your dog. He killed a dog that was left in his care, it’s absolutely inexcusable. Do not leave your dog with this guy, he will kill them.

Terrible display of dog training right here. You accomplished nothing and the dog still doesn't respect you. Using higher level equipment to teach something that can be learned with a leash and collar along with physical praise, this dog is just confused now. What takes you 3 months to teach a dog takes real trainers 30 minutes.

Blah blah blah.... oh my God some people that do these videos are so full of themselves and so into themselves that they think everyone is going to be so into them as well and they just don't shut up I couldn't even get past 4 minutes and 58 seconds is just he lost me I got completely bored learn how to make your videos short sweet and to the point I was looking for help with my dog. my search continues...... and an explanation for my username I usually switch over to my real name I just totally forgot and I use this username before the 90 Day Fiance videos when I comment there
