These days there are many dog trainers and dog owners who are under the belief that an electric dog collar (e-collar, shock collar, etc.) actually make aggression and anxiety worse in dogs.
This can sometimes be true!
But only if the person using the collar is doing so improperly.
Done right, an electric collar is the quickest and most humane way to achieve the dog training results you're looking to get. It allows you to drastically shorten the time it takes to achieve a goal and can be done with very low levels of stimulation.
Watch this training video to determine just how an e-collar can help fix dog aggression, anxiety, and aggressive dogs.

can we just have a moment to acknowledge how amazingly patiently the dog sits there?
thankyou for the details in understanding the root of the fear and understanding the dog and not just what we want. so many want intstant gratification out of thrir dogs without being understanding, open minded and patient. i absolutely loved this.
This is exactly the kind of explanation I was looking for. It's been really helpful. Thank you!
I was hopeless until I saw your video🤯 mind blowing
good video. I would recommend you showing some of the training when you need to correct during a real situation when the dog's tend to feel anxious and aggressive (on leash when they see other dogs, or other people, etc.). also may be worth adding in here how to calibrate the right level, so it is something that is just a small feeling as opposed to a bolt of lightening and punishment.... thank you...
thanks for the explanation but you did not show us the electric collar you must approach the picture and show us more how to use it not just ex plane the behavior of the dog
Gosh thank you so much for this!
sadly i work with dogs and theur families who have given up and expect the results now. training the dogs are easy in that situation, but training the families and educating them in being understanding and open minded is so hard sometimes. its sad to me to see how quickly ppl will give up their animals over small things that have no harm torwards anyone (example: digging or play barking ect). thankyou for making this video to help ppl understand electronic collars and with a little work with understanding, patience, love, and history it can make for such a happy family.
Hi, very informative! while listening to your explanation of dog anxiety I couldn't help but wonder about hyper-excitement as well as temper tantrums. just recently bought an e-collar and I'm doing some research, but the unwanted behaviour usually happens out of sight. any advice?
Hi Ty, Thanks for posting videos. Jezebel is a 5 year old Akita lab, great with people and SOME dogs. I'm not sure what makes her dominant/aggressive with dogs - sometimes it's a little dog or even a puppy. She's generally lazy, content, and doesn't bark much. She is 80lbs with upright ears, so she looks a little scary. I live in Spokane, lots of dogs run off leash here. Jezebel is ALWAYS leashed. I never know if or when she'll get aggressive, so I avoid other dogs completely. I don't think she's scared, maybe more like annoyed or expressing some sort of dominance. Honestly, it freaks me out - I feel out of control. I have taken her to obedience school, treat training. Would e-collar training help us with this sporadic behavior? How does this work when confronted with another dog on a walk? If so, is there a brand you recommend for a large dog with thick fur? THANK YOU!!! Katie
What is the type of collar used? Brand etc
I liked how you work with the dog and the collar, to see it put to work but I would have much rather have seen more of it and less talking before the actual working session.

Denise Toman there is a point to his "talking".
Just got my ecollar, what do you recommend for a dog who becomes aggressive when she sees other dogs and bikers? We rescued a German shepherd who is a total sweetheart but becomes highly aggressive when she sees people riding bikes and other dogs. Should I hold onto the button when she begins to bark and attack and only release when she stops? I'm hoping I will only have to use the vibrating option on her..
Hi, I just brought home a 1 year old blue heeler that is extremely aggressive towards other dogs and he's also food aggressive. I know fear and focus play a big role in is negative behaviors, but I was wondering what kind of exercises (besides these) that you would do to help with the aggression.
I have had my dogs professionally trained in a two week boot camp at the age of 5 months old. They are cane corso mastiff brothers. They obey simple commands such as sit, come and stay, but when I go on a walks they growl at other dogs as well as people and pull me. One of them is more fearful than the other. I thought I would try to put them in doggy day care to socialize them but embarrassingly they failed! lol! I need to bring my dogs with me to my sister's home in Colorado and she has a dog as well, therefore we are both very nervous about my dogs interacting with her dog. I have been using the shock collar with them but after watching your video I think I have been using it more as a disciplinary measure but it seems to work. I have used it when they growl at others and they quit growling. What would you recommend me working on to prepare them for my sister's visit or do I kiss that idea goodbye?
Great video! Thanks for helping me understand the underlying reasons for my dog's aggression and how to help both of us happier & healthier
This video is VERY helpful! I have a new rescue, they told me he is boarder collie/lab. he is 1.5 yrs old and I have had him about 6 weeks. Apparently he has been in the shelter for almost a year and I am the 4th foster home and I want to adopt him... he gets along very well with my other dog (they really love each other a lot). So he hasn't learned basic commands he will only sit, etc. with a treat (I'm working on this) He loves to play ball but he gets over excited and when I go to correct him he becomes aggressive. He actually bit me a few days ago :( ... I am not scared of him but I am considering a shock collar so that I can correct him. Thanks again and I will be watching more videos!!!!!
This video is excellent. Thank you! What brand of e collar is this?
Best description of aggression I have heard so far.. I understand my dog better now. Thank you,
What e collar would you recommend I'm about to start training my 1.5 year old catahoula male he has a bit on anxiety issues. Very Welles behaved "unless" haha
I really appreciate this video it gave me a new Out look on a shock collar! I'm really happy I found this! hopefully this will help my pup!
Hi Ty, so I have a question for you. I just bought my dog the mini-educator, and I've run into a problem after only using it twice. The highest level I've used with him is 7 (I can feel it at 6- feels like someones tapping me) after searching for his working level. Problem is, after doing the recall exercise, many times, he is suddenly afraid every time I say "here", whether or not I press the button. If I start pressing the button (I've been using continuous-releasing when he comes to me) he'll try to get away from me, pulling on the leash, scared out of his mind of the invisible "thing" that he feels. Is he supposed to associate me with the shock/tap? I start pressing the button when I say "here" and release if he moves in my direction at all. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm afraid I'm just scaring him. I still believe e-collar is the answer, just afraid I'm doing it wrong. :x
GREAT INFORMATION. THANKS!
In the most respectful manner Ty, this is a collar conditioning exercise for the initial 'return to base' procedure? I'm afraid that it is both misleading and inaccurate to claim that aggression towards either people or dogs can be either 'solved' or 'fixed'. 'Managed', yes - In many instances the display can be managed, but it is no more 'solvable' than it is for me to claim that I can 'solve' your humour, or your own fears. If you put a hood over my head and a knife to my throat at the age of 8, whether you physically harm me or not, that 'fear' will remain with me for life. So it is with the vast majority of 'fear reactive' dogs. We suppress and provide alternatives, but we will never 'solve'. Fear exists to preserve the organism Ty, it's of greater significance at the unexpected 'BOOM' moment, than a history of low level trained obedience. Nice explanations.

Why does that fear have to stay with you for life?

Ty The Dog Guy by virtue of the fact that experience and memory will 'hold' that fear Ty .. To protect you. That's the point. Everything serves to best protect the interest of the subject. Of course you can collar condition and prompt incompatible alternatives to the natural or pre-learned association, but to suggest that we can 'solve' 'fix' or 'cure', is taking the concept of 'management' beyond its limits.

Fear doesn't need to be the dominant emotional response in a given situation Ty, it can be 'pushed a few places behind' acceptance ... But it's still there mate! It's still recorded, recognised and reserved ... No matter what you, I or any other person on the planet believes. Re-enact, either the initial eliciting context, or something very close to it - minus handler presence or tool reliance - and you will witness either spontaneous recovery or reinstatement (dependant on the context). It's FACT Ty. It WILL happen where genuine fear exists and predominates.
This training vid is great! Additionally after going through the videos found at Daryl Arktrom’s website and understanding my dog’s behavior patterns I’m getting better at this every day!
very good explained !
Very good EDUCATIONAL VIDEO. Thank you so much. I love how you are teaching people about this topic. I am headed out after this video to purchase my dogs training collar.... My Boxer/ pit is exactly what your describing.... she used to be very fearful. I have worked with her alot to be less aggressive and fearful, but i live with four people and they have not been able to control in the same way when i am not home. She charges at them when i am gone (but can be very nice when i am home) i feel they have given her power by reacting to her anxiety, barking, and charging early on . Now i almost doubt she is fearful at all because of training and exposure, but has maintained bad habits in the home to control the other people she lives with. I will be making my room mates watch this to teach us all to use the remote trainer properly. I totally believe once they can also communicate to her with confidence (and understand what they are telling her) She will learn some better habits.
would an e collar be useful for a dog that pay bites? my dog is a approx 10 month old pitbull. He was adopted by us 30 days ago. He was never taught any manners. he responds well on leash, sits, waits, heels (all taught by me) but as soon as the leash comes off, he is is very playful and nips like a puppy. due to his age and size it hurts. I need this to stop in order to be able to keep him in our home
Very much enjoyed this video. I just bought an e collar for my 6 month old lab and ridgeback mix. She had a very high prey drive outside. I cannot get her attention when we are out at all. She also pulls very bad on the leash the entire time. She has no "social awareness" as you said. Thanks for all the tips!!!
Excellent lesson in theory!
I really liked your breakdown as I have an e-collar and was using it as a correctional tool. Can I start from the beginning? As you stated my dog is one ofthosethat listen well when alone, listen ok when around others, I have a lot of difficulty when in stressful situation. He is great with my 2yr old but escalating aggressive behaviour with other children and now adults, even those he already knows. What would you suggest?
I'm extremely grateful for your video , I had to pause to go get a pen and some paper .
so - if my dog is at, say, a dog park, and another dog incites aggression in my dog, how is the e-collar used? Do I just use the "come" command with a button push??????
Hi! I have a two year old great dane who is pretty well trained. She is great around people but when she gets around other dogs she wants to play very rough. She makes scary noises that I know she is her way of saying let's play but it comes across as mean. When she plays with timid dogs she won't let up and pins them to the ground as much as she can. She also puts her mouth around their neck. It sounds terrible but she doesn't do it in a vicious way. I bought a shock collar but am not sure this will stop her aggressive play. Do you have any advice?
Makes sense to me. Used humanely as an "attention getter" and distraction seems like an excellent idea. Well done.
how would I use a dog collar to effectively stop my dog from barking ?
My dog won't stop biting me, he doesn't do it aggressively but as soon as I start to push him away he snarls his lip up and comes after me. How can I fix this?
Hi hoping you can guide me. BF and I are at witts end. We have a very loveable male neutered pit along with a male neutered black lab. Lab is very submissive. Pitt is friendly and loving to us.......end of story. He cannot get the proper exercise because he has tried to bite other people and dogs and cats before. I fear taking him for walks because he is so cute other people want to approach and he will NOT lunge usually he will act as if he wants to be pet and then strike. We don't own therefore no fenced in yard. Both dogs are destroying our home too they pee and poop all over house no matter how many times taken out to relieve themselves. No health issues either dog.
