How to use a FASTNED 300kW Rapid Charger / Electrifying

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

FastNed may be a new name in the UK but it's one of the biggest rapid charging networks in Europe and is expanding out of its native Holland into other countries. You can spot them by their solar canopy, which provides a welcome cover from elements.
The company's 12th and latest hub in the UK is at Energy Superhub Oxford where you will find five 300kW charger units with 10 connections. Fastned is the first non-Tesla charging company to use what’s known as ‘Plug and Charge’ technology, where the charger recognises your car (once you’ve registered it with Fastned) and automatically charges your account. No flapping away with contactless cards, apps or RFID tags.
Join Ginny as she shows you how to use one of the latest 300kW charging units with Electrifying.com’s Audi Q4 e-tron. And if you want to see more charging guides, make sure to watch our other charging guide videos.

As a Dutchman i'm honoured Ginny loves our cheese, however it makes me a bit sad to see her with a Edam flavoured Babybel cheese, which is just as Dutch as a Renault, Peugeot or Citroën car. (Hint... all of these including the cheese are French)

You forgot to mention that you need to get a parking ticket to use any of the chargers at Oxford. Your first hour is free but you still need to get a ticket so the number plate recognition system does not send you a fine through the post.

That's totally fair. If you are shopping for the day, you can plug into a slow charger and pay for parking, whereas fast chargers who will leave within 30 mins or so don't pay a parking fee on top.

I’ve been to the Oxford chargers twice (on both occasions staying around 35 mins) and didn’t get a ticket. I couldn’t see any cameras on entry - was I just lucky or do the cameras only look at the parking spaces (and not the rapids)?

I’m confused. Why does using a Kia EV6 slow things down with a 45 minute max charge if they have a faster charging rate? Is it because you have 300kW shared? I’m not sure that was explained well. Is it just me?

You're not alone! I am also confused, when it should be able to charge much faster than the other cars.

@@aaravshah2288 Bc the EV6 with it's charge rate capability will drop the distribution to fellow EV riders. Nevertheless, it's advisable if you have enough EV charge spots, not to charge your EV next to an other EV, but rather take the next charger.. ( 2 EV's charging via same EV station will lower the charge speed...)

@@aaravshah2288 (most cars can't do 300kw anyway 70-120kw on newer cars less on older cars) and if the car that's first plugged in is less then 25-30% charge the second charger will likely be suspended until the first car charges past 25-30% (roughly), it's how the ones near me function on motaways services

You mention that with FastNed Ultra Rapid Chargers it is possible to charge two cars simultaneously. With others such as Gridserve there seems to be no way to tell if a charger with two outlets can do this. Is there any way to tell in advance without plugging in beside another charging vehicle, only to be told that insufficient power is available?

Fastned uses a propriatary System for Plug and charge by scanning the cars mac-adress. The official (ISO) Plug and Charge is of course supported by VW/Audi/Skoda. The question here is why is Fastned not using the official Plug and charge.

That’s likely because you haven’t been starting to charge from a lower percentage. The fuller the battery, the slower the charging speed.

Vehicles can have the same ‘unique identifier’ with auto charge. It’s completely flawed. Try Plug and Charge, the true driverless authentication, being implemented by VW, Audi et al.

Why bother with this new system which looks as if it will be problematic depending on what you drive - better still as Tesla has opened up its network to non-Tesla's just use them instead at a higher rate of .54p per kilowatt and I am blessed as I have a Tesla charging area 10 minutes from my home but still driving my ICE Fiesta
