Regarding motorway services, it would be really handy if they had a dynamic sign on the services for live availability and price, something like "CCS2 350kW chargers - 9/12 available, £0.69/kWh" As you say, I'm sure they used to do this for fuel prices and I'm sure I've seen this already in France (the price, though I don't think the availability)

Road tax on EVs. You may have covered this already. What’s the news on upcoming road tax on BEVs? Any advice on delaying the payment by ‘paying’ the current £0 early to get a further 12 months at that rate? Am an avid subscriber/listener. Thank you for an interesting 20-25 minutes as I playback at 1.25 speed 😀

Take in the horrendous depreciation, and you’d have to insane or an idiot to buy one of these, or pretty much any EV.

Left my i3 for a month in an airport car park with 20% charge. It lost nothing, and the 12V was fully charged. So losing 25% in 2 days is ridiculous. . Whilst in a small seaside town in SW France I saw one Citroen Ami EV, but dozens of Méharis and 2CV’s. I’m with Tom on these, and so obviously are many French.

NIO's battery swap is a daft idea. It's so niche that it's pointless. It's a continuation of the pretence that we need to replicate the "5 minutes to fill" world of ICE vehicles.

Mike: do you have anything like an OBD monitor plugged in to your Ioniq 5, which would drain the 12V battery? Or do you have any service (intelligent charging, or vehicle monitoring) that would be regularly polling the car's status over the air? I regularly leave my EV6 (same battery, software and architecture) parked up for 4 or 5 days at a time and the traction battery doesn't lose any noticeable charge at all. I left it at Heathrow on 17% for 3 weeks and when I came back it was still on 17%. My dealership (Gravell's Kia, Swansea) is very good, and I've always had all the software updates and replacements whenever they were available. It might be worth checking with your dealers to see if there is any work outstanding on your car.

There is a world outside the US. And Kia, BYD, VW, Skoda, Renault, Mag, Citroen, Audi are pretty strong on it. Tesla have a growing problem in they’ve only has one new model in the last 5 years.

I'm not sure quarterly software updates suit Europeans. It drives me mad that things change on my phone very frequently. They can't even fix pot holes in the UK so how are they going to sort out planning laws?. On the other hand it seems they can build flats on every spare inch of land where I live so maybe they should build car chargers that look like tiny flats - there may even be some cover for users too.

My Dad’s first car was a 1967 Fiat 500, I would love to have an electrified original Fiat 500. I have also ordered a salary sacrifice Hyundai Ioniq 5 (supposedly arriving at the end of the month) so I am slightly worried about Mike’s problems. Edit: I am seriously starting to wish I had gone for a Skoda Enyaq instead.

Someone got a WhatsApp message during the show right when Mike started to cover the mailbag. Sorry Ginny how do you deal with long road trips or travel to long distances chuck your type-2 on top of your luggage?? AC charging is good for overnight at a hotel for example and means your battery is full when you leave in the morning without the need to stop at a fast charger(DC) which could be ICE'd by idiots and the authorities do nothing even if there is signs it takes the enforcement officer to be there at the time.

Really interested in the Cupra Born VZ and just spotted Tom's review on the website. It seems to be everything I feel I'm missing in my ID.3. The ID.3 has great space, efficiency and performance and the tech is fine (higher spec than my golf) but needs a bit more driving spark. Even if I can't stretch to a VZ I suspect I'd get a similar spec Cupra Born next instead of the ID.3. On charging cables a colleague of mine who is a 3d printer geek printed a hook for me that means I can hang my cables if they are wet from the bag hook - it basically adds a scoop so the cable can hang from it. Cable either goes there or coiled in the bag.

I've always thought a compartment on the side of the boot would be nice for cables. No need to off load the works to grab your cables.

Mike, once the 12v has died once then the battery has lost a load of capacity and therefore will fail easily. I always keep a small start pack in my Kia Soul, it’s about the size of a mobile phone.

If you are thinking of purchasing a rear wheel drive car, then you also have to consider winter or cross climate tyres. My rear wheel drive BMW rear wheel was confined to my driveway following a reasonable fall of snow. My colleagues reported the same situation with their rear wheel drive cars. After purchasing a second set of alloys and winter tyres, my BMW would sail through snow bound roads. Several car dealerships in my area actually offered a service (at a cost), whereby they would swap out a customers summer tyres for winter tyres, then store the summer tyres until it was time to change them over.

Much of that doesn’t apply to modern EV’s which have a balanced centre of gravity and not a big lump of weight at the front of the car.

Glad to see Ginny back. Mike’s tale of his Ioniq 5 running out of 12 volt juice raised all kinds of issues. Firstly if you go on a two week holiday leaving the car at the airport and finding that it does not work when you get back then the car is useless no matter what powers it. Secondly, the KW Half Hour team seem to have some sort of death wish when you think letting any car, ICE or EV, getting too far below half full is a good idea. Fill up little and often - at least that is how I have to live.

The number of times I have had to call a network because a charger was not working is quite a lot over 8 years of EV driving and in almost all cases they have been able to access the unit remotely. Why can't they display and then update prices remotely, too!

What do you think of the EV trend to calling the EV range as 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9? Remember when we had names like Golf, Scirocco, Passat etc and we call coped? I’m so bored with Model 3, EV3, EX3 etc.. Cables in the Frunk for the win. Loads of space in Model 3 and Y, and dont use Frunk for much else normally so always able to get to cables on rare occasion it is needed.
