NEW KIA EV3: Is this the electric car that rewrites the rules? | Electrifying

READ THE REVIEW: www.electrifying.com/reviews/...
The Kia EV3 is an all-electric ‘B-segment SUV’, which is industry speak for ‘a small-ish, SUV-ish hatchback.’ At 4.3-metres long, it’s a touch smaller than the Kia Niro EV, bigger than the Jeep Avenger and a very similar size to the VW ID.3 and Volvo EX30. This is an important car for Kia because compact SUVs like this make up almost a third of all new cars sold in Europe and from our first look we think the EV3 is great all rounder that may well become the car to beat in its class.
One of its strong points will be its driving range and efficiency, as the EV3 gets a WLTP range of 373 miles from the 81.4kWh usable battery. It’ll be fairly affordable, too; the EV3 will cost from around £33,000 when it arrives later in 2024. Given the range, the big car tech that it offers and those funky EV9-inspired looks, that’s a lot of car for the money.
Details of the powertrain are still under wraps, but the EV3 sits on a modified version of the E-GMP platform that also underpins the EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, so we’d expect to see front-wheel drive - and possibly even a fast, dual-motor, four-wheel drive variant arriving at a later date.
The EV3 specialises in offering lots of big car tech. Some of it will be optional, but you’ll be able to have heated and ventilated front seats and a head-up display. Kia’s semi-autonomous drive system, which will stop-and-start the car with the flow of the traffic, beam the speed limit onto the dash and keep the car in its lane, will be standard across the range.
It’s the first Kia to get some new nifty regenerative braking technology which means you can opt for different levels of one-pedal driving so if full regeneration isn’t your thing you can calm it down a little. The EV3 will also feature vehicle to load and vehicle to grid increasingly common on electric cars, but still not available on VW Group models.
Full pricing and equipment levels haven’t been confirmed, but expect the EV3 to start from around £33,000 and run right up to more than £40,000.

If you live in the country and tend to get power cuts, Vehicle to Load is brilliant!. During the last storm, with creative use of extension leads, had the fridge, freezer, microwave, some portable lights and the TV running off an Ioniq 5 for 3 days, fantastic.

@MGcyclist tell us all how you've never without electricity for more than a few hours without telling us you've never been without electricity for more than a few hours.
I have used V2L quite a bit since owning an Ioniq 5. My camping gear is now electric ( induction hob and fridge), used V2L in a couple of power cuts to keep the freezer and fishtank going, plus sometimes use it as a cheap energy source to heat my home office when it's just me at home (using stored overnight electric in the day), so I don't think it is a gimmick and is a must have for me now. Ev3 is now a contender for my next EV, thanks for the video.
Kia, Hyundai are setting the standard for solid, reliable well thought out EV’s.
I'm beginning to think that Kia have really nailed it with their EV offerings, overtaking Audi (who really haven't), Mercedes (not quite there yet) and BMW (almost there) on the way.

You can do the same with a 12V inverter. Attach it to your car's 12V battery and turn the car on. This works particularly well with EVs since the traction battery will charge the 12V battery as necessary. Perfect for emergencies.
Will be a top seller in no time.
KIa is certainly kicking a lot of goals these days and I am looking forward to driving one when they arrive in Australia. Vehicle to load is a fantastic option and yes I would use it regularly: camping, as an integrated power source through my smart meter when the the grid prices go through the roof. It should be one of the most important options for consumers, and yes, European manufacturers are laggards in that space.
Looks like a great car that will do so well in the UK. Kia are fantastic in the EV space.
V2H (Vehicle to Home) and V2G (Vehicle to Grid) is very important to me and a must have. This car looks amazing, I love it and will order a test drive as soon as it's available.

Reading Kia’s press release it only has V2L.
There's so much to like about this car, looks, practicality, range, BUTTONS and tech. Kia really are on top of their EV game. If I had to be picky I prefer the charge flap to be on the front, no heads up display (?) and the DC charging speed is a bit slow (tho this will preserve the battery) but meh. I like the narrower screens...when driving you can rest your fingers on the top of the screen and use your thumb. I'm really not into big screens Just take my money now!

@@stevewest131 Tesla’s are on the side and are perfectly OK, I might suggest. Not a problem for them. Mine is on the side. Only a problem is my drive is not quite wide enough… I suppose sensible side positioning is on the driver side but I don’t think think that holds true for all models. Compromises, compromises, but driving forwards from a parking spot is an important safety factor. There are other safety points in reverse parking. Proper drivers reverse park wherever/whenever possible. Supermarket carparks are the worst for encouraging frontwards parking.
Reminds me of a Bertone Citroen concept. It’s a great looking and distinctive car.
Nice. And thank God it hasn’t got the dated Tesla 1 screen no button nonsense.
Your question on V2L and V2G. V2L is definitely very useful, no need to elaborate. V2G is a bit more controversial. First, the special V2G chargers are as expensive as a home battery that fits on a hybrid inverter. Second, if the car battery is an LFP it would probably not hurt the life, but a ternary battery... I'm not sure if you want to limit the life of it for using as a home battery. If it drives as the 9, this 3 with the 81 kWh battery and a 600km range is going to be a killer. This is a car I'd want to buy.

Thank for a great preview. The bit which caught my eye was vehicle to grid. We have a battery installation at home of about the size of the entry level EV3. Being able to double that by using the car in extremis (we get power cuts about 4 times a year) really appeals. Apart from that I would probably want a 4WD option which I could get with Smart or Mini at a price.
Thought the front seats were going to spin around like second row in Ev9?
Charge port location is North American NACS friendly, well done Kia we need a vehicle that can pull up to a Tesla Version 3 supercharger without any issues especially being a 400volt design battery pack, 30 minutes 10-80 is just fine, give us road trippers time to grab a bit and go to the Lue!
I like it and will consider it in the future. Charging is a bit slow though
Any body know how many watts the onboard inverter puts out? And, is it a pure sine wave inverter?
Interesting proposal, i believe Is a Boxy versione of the Niro , unfortunately the charging at right Is blocking usage in small european garages . I choose Niro for thi reason wirh plug in front , bad booking but useful
the only reason I'd be likely to use V2L is to keep the freezer going in a long power cut, and it'd have to be a long one. I wouldn't use v2g at all with current battery chemistries.
amazing car, the only drawback for me is the 100 k charging power, hope it makes 200k soon

YAY for the buttons! It even has my preferred side-by-side cupholders. If consumer don't need to haul big loads or big families, it'll be a winner. I don't perceive that it has a heads-up display, and I don't know if it has a digital rear view mirror. These are both great features that I've grown to love. Hahaha! I see that you took a "clap" leaf out of Nicola's book. The top-of-the-line range is outstanding, but the charging speed could be better, like in other E-GMP siblings. I hope they'll be building them on this side of the pond in the factory due to open in Q4 this year.

That is a nice video review, thanks. We like that EV. Wonder what it will cost. We would have loved to have that V2H and V2G in our new Citroën ë-C3 Max, That was something we were waiting for, but no EV in 2024 that we could afford has it. Possibly the Renault 5 E-tech, but that is due to arrive in a year, and only the €32.000 version has it. And that has a NMC battery, witch is not our favorite. V2L would be a gimmick, that we would probably never use.
I’m not sure where KIA fits in the car brand league these days. They certainly make some superb EVs and seem to be the upcoming car brand that’s quite out there. Seeing more and more on the road. I have an EV6 and I think it’s absolutely brilliant making the swap to an electric vehicle a breeze. Couldn’t have imagined myself buying a KIA a few years ago where it would def have been and Audi or BMW for me.
i really love the design, nice job Kia !
Great job. I like the EV3. As an American I say, Kia can you make a midsize pickup truck?
V2L is not a gimmick, I have an allotment (pea patch) and have replaced my mower, strimmer, hedge trimmer & tiller with mains electric versions. I only have to charge one battery and no more blisters trying to start them in the spring, no more smelly petrol spills and oil leaks on the boot floor. Vwhicle to grid is good. Other than that and hopefully lower price the Niro EV seems more spacious with pretty much all the same tech and facility, including vehicle to load inside and out.
I use V2L pretty much daily on my Ioniq 5. It powers loads of stuff in my house throughout the day and then I charge the car using cheap energy rates at night, I have used it to power the lawn mover and for many camping trips. It is a major consideration for my next EV that the car has to have V2L. I cannot fathom why cars like the ID Buzz do not have it - that is the perfect EV on the market for camping. VW have missed a trick there.

i'm glad to see that Kia is not falling down the bar soap design hole. But I noticed that some other companies are starting to follow sued with Kia, and what I would call storm trooper chic. That is the say, the designs of the Kia, some BMWs, the Subaru/Toyota electric vehicles, all kind of remind me of a first order Star Wars storm trooper helmet. That's not a dig, but it just goes to prove that there are styling trends that seem to jump across different car manufacturers.
