It's ep. 3 of the Great Canadian Throwdown! We were challenged to make a clay lamp, and I decided to take it to the next level by making a clay lampshade! It... didn't go exactly according to plan.

I feel a strange affection for the lamp base that got squished because you put it together too fast. Blob Lamp! Short and wonky! Sometimes we are all Blob Lamp. It's really cool seeing you poke all those holes in the lampshade after marking them out with the ruler. They make such a pleasingly regular pattern! Except for that one line down the side... My favourite thing about these videos is watching you take the prompt from the show and go in your own direction with it and make what you want to make. I just love it when people express their creativity in their own way and bring their own personal vision to life. And you're absolutely right that the lamp turned out great! Cozy is exactly the right word! I think the lampshade looks neat the way it is, but if I were you I'd remake it... just because if I were you I'd be nervous about bumping into the pointy bits! That's me, though. I think the real question is whether this lampshade or a remade lampshade would make you happier to see in your home, and I can't answer that one for you.

Use the broken lampshade with the blob bottom and it can be a piece about how imperfect can still be beautiful!

I have to thank you for pointing out the Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down, because I've been able to find episodes online, and whenever I visit my Mom, we're able to watch it together. She doesn't find a lot of shows she looks forward to, and loves Pottery Throw Down, so this was a nice treat to bring to her.

I have a few thoughts~ >I want to say how much I admire you for finishing the piece even after the heartbreak of the "misfire," and completing the video! The way I would have walked away from the whole thing and scrapped it all... I appreciate your example! Because the final piece has great character! >With the breakage, you have a kind of "live edge" situation going on and I like it! >My suggestion is to create a new lamp shade, buy a fabric or paper one, *and* keep the first one. Then you'll have choices!! 😉

I think I would work with the damage and find inspiration from it, more than likely introducing other materials. It’s a delicate thing making something that looks really cool, but by weaving a thread like jute/leather or linen string (or even a knitted net cover) using the holes here and there it would be fun to try and see where it goes... You can always just make another lampshade, but on the other hand you might turn it into something even more fabulous by honouring the damage. If you decide to make another lampshade how about turning the damage one upside down and make it into a cool hanging plant thing by attaching some rope (macrame?) through the holes. Anyway, great job, Mia. Thanks for sharing. You have a lovely lamp whatever you do.

Thank you for always sharing the warts as well as your success. I would make a second lamp shade, well actually a third because that is how we grow and when you see the lamp every day, you will remember overcoming adversity, whereas seeing the broken piece will remind you that you gave up before the job was done.

Chicago here (kind of close to your old hood). I love old stuff with a lot of imperfections, but unless you rough up the sphere (put some major dents in it or a hole), to give it balance, I think in this case making a new shade would be better. Plus you might sleep better by giving yourself some real closure on the project, lol. I'm kind of talking from personal experience on that. But I am soooo glad I saw this video because I'm gearing up to doing a lamp soon, so thanks or that nudge and being a great teacher!

I love the broken, textured edge. It has so much character and really tells the story of your reclaim and hard work in making it. I also love how the light from behind emphasizes the uneven edge. As someone else has said, you could always make a new shade and then swop them over when ever you feel like it. I really enjoy watching you work and that you are not perfect. Seeing how you overcome problems in different ways is very encouraging to me. Thank you so much.

5:17 Hein sight 20/20, what if you kept the top one on the batt but supported it up? Like, the kiln shelf supports supporting the batt. I wonder if it would still droop but droop in a different way? The shade, I think I would've gone too far and made the top look like it was pillowed/ quilted. I would like to see you remake the top and maybe turn the existing one into kensugi? Or add to it? I love the layers

Great video! For the shade, you could remake it if you really want the designer look (maybe make it out of a different color clay for contrast?) but if your fine w/ the prehistoric look, you could (maybe?) break the rest of the edges. Also, I think it's interesting to see the transition between the broken and the unbroken sides. It's kind of like half of it went back to how it was when it was "new" and the other half stayed "old". You could also just remake the shade, and break the edges so you can switch it up whenever. Sorry For this being so long of an explanation :/
