It's the first episode of the Great Canadian Throwdown! Our first challenge is to make a tribute to our hometown. I decided to sculpt my childhood home. It ended up turning into something of a dollhouse and I am so obsessed.

Out of all the throw downs you’ve done, this one really hit home on the sweetness of creating memory pieces.

Today I was in the museum of archeology in Crete looking at a couple of terracotta buildings with figures inside : dated 1750BC. We seem to have been making pottery houses for at least 4000 yrs, it’s incredible. Nice work, Mia. Hope you have a good time back home and your Ma likes the prezzie. Also how could we not love The British Throw Down more ? Not a shred of arrogance or ego, just love of pottery.

I LOVE THIS!!! I can't imagine anything I'd love more than to have a ceramic replica of my childhood home. The house and the little hill and the DOG and the FURNITURE and everything! It's just fantastic!! Enough detail to make it interesting, abstracted enough to make it decorative and artistic. LOVE IT.

My mum did this, she made a kind of maquette of the outside of our house, exactly on scale. She no longer lives in the house, but it's on the cupboard in her house now.

I simply must share. After I saw this I looked up my childhood home (I hadn’t been inside for 35+ years) and it happened to be for sale!! Long story short I managed to get to go see it! Boy has it changed! My skills are not what yours are but what a wonderful gift you have made for your Mama and yourself! Some day maybe I will be able to make mine!!! Thank you for sharing. You never know how your pottery and videos might affect someone.

So nice! I kind of want to make a replica of my childhood home since my dad built it! As for the Canadian throw down, I liked it well enough. I think that Seth was a selling point to get people the watch the show but I don’t think he will be a constant presence or at least not showcase him so much. They called him a guest judge so I am assuming he will not be in the next episode.

Thanks for yet another amazing video! Love to see you as excited about canadian throwdown as I am :) Although I love Seth, he did get too much air time. Give the Canadians some more time to get all cuddly and wholesome as the UK cast. Takes a while ,-) Off now to recreate my grandparent's house as my next project. Greetings from a Candian-German super fan 🤘🏽

I love the house! It came out so cool! I have only seen the first ep of the Canadian show so far, but I liked it. I think Seth's strong presence in the first ep was really to draw people in. I think he's only going to be a judge in a couple episodes, at least that's what one article I read said. One thing I really liked about the Canadian show was they specifically said the throwdown part would impact the judging. A criticism I've always had about the British show was I've felt the throwdown was pointless because it seemed to have no bearing on the judging every episode. Usually because the throwdowns get a little silly and don't show the contestants' skill off in any particular area very well. I also like that the Canadian show talked about glazes a bit more, and they also have kilns from this century 😂 I can't wait to keep following along with you as the show goes on!

This reminds me of my highschool art class.. we had to replicate an unusual inanimate object out of clay. But the teacher didn't tell us how to work with clay, she just gave us our lumps of clay and some random tools and left us to it. I tried to replicate a vintage projector, which turned out looking like a dalek mated with a melted toaster. 😂 I find it kind of funny now, but back then I was really disappointed... Had I seen one of your videos back then, I bet it would have turned out better. Just letting the slabs firm up before constructing the 3D shape would have made such a big difference!

This turned out so freaking adorable! I love the cozy colours and the sweet doggie! I enjoyed watching the Canadian Pottery Throwdown on TV. CBC tv usually does pretty good job of emulating the British “competition” reality tv series. I’m not a Seth Rogan fan. I don’t really dislike him, just not much of a fan. I noticed that he had a bit more screen time than I would’ve liked, too. One thing that I was really disappointed in was him seemingly using his pottery to perhaps show off the fact that he likes marijuana. One piece was a bong and the other was an ashtray. I know it’s legal here in Canada and I’m not a prude about it, but this is a prime time tv show that is going to be watched by people of all ages….including kids with their families. I live on the east coast…..the show aired around 8pm. I don’t think it’s the right kind of content for this particular kind of show. You don’t see the bakers on the Great Canadian Baking Show being asked to make a fancy, sexy cake for a bachelorette party. Sheesh. I am super excited that my home province of New Brunswick has three contestants, though! Places east of Montreal are usually not represented in these shows, so I am happy about that and excited to see how they do.

Seth has a business where he sells ceramic smoking paraphernalia called Houseplant. I assume since he’s producing the show, he wanted to do a bit of a product placement for his business. Making an ashtray that worked for him was the thing that got him into pottery in the first place.

It's a good show in Canada. I saw the 2nd show today where they had to do chessfigures. Wonderful. The british show is much better with the great crying Keith and the others with their humor. I don't like Seth with his hands in his bags and the strange laughs. Maybe he needs a chance. But it's ok because the potters are good. It's not easy to see it here in Berlin, Germany, because you need a VPN for Canada. I found UrbanVPN for free to be virtual in Canada and for the british show in the UK. Your house is so beautiful that you could be the potter of the week 😂😂😂

@PotterytothePeople still in the planning - the house was built into a hill. Think carving out a cubical volume from the face of it and tucking a box into that. Half the height of the box pokes above the hill top. The bottom half is surrounded by dirt on three sides. The ground swoops down around the sides of the house to back. Windows and a door open onto the back patio and ravine behind. Challenge wiil be the one story drop from. Front to back without building a piece so heavy even Rodin would be impredd!

I am waiting for the second episode as I feel that Seth was the focus of episode one to draw in viewers. He is called a "guest judge" and I hope that means he will not be on every episode. That being said, it was surprising to watch Seth be the most critical of the judges and I actually enjoyed seeing negative comments alongside positive ones as it gives a more realistic perspective of artistic critiques.

I really enjoyed your video! I would have loved to hear a voice overs over the time laps where you explain your idea, technique or just memories of your home. Also it may be helpful to add the name of the show to your titel so more people can find your video 😊

I think your house came out really cute! The beagle is really sweet! As for my opinion on the show. I think it's okay. It's definitely not the same without Keith crying! LOL and I feel like Seth Rogen is forced on there. I don't feel like he's qualified to be a judge only having done pottery for a few years. Though I really don't like him to begin with so I'm probably a little biased.😂

haha 100%! I never had a problem with him before, but my opinion has changed lol Exactly what you said about him not being qualified to be a judge. I have many years on him and yet I would still not have to hubris to think I can judge a pottery show!

You did really well as always ❤ You hit the nail on the head on why the British throw down is better. But I'm from Northern Ireland so maybe I'm a little biased 🤭

Okay I have to agree about Rogen’s laugh, and he makes some pretty seemingly uninformed comments (trying to be nice here). I feel less of him going forward would make the show much better!

Of course it's going to be compared to the original, and, frankly, it doesn't come clòse. The hosts and judges are lackluster; I don't know if I can tolerate Rogen's laugh - it's ANNOYING.
