    I give it a 10 on how difficult it is. I haven’t ever been able to trim them and now she’s 11 1/2 yrs old and I can’t take her to the vet and be sedated. Walking, traveling and steps don’t happen any longer. So now I have to learn how to relax her and trim them myself and not hurt her or cause stress.

    Never cut mine before as he’s a rescue but will be using clippers as a dremmel is too noisy for us both. He’s got a MASSIVE dewclaw which is almost in his skin so I’m cutting it when my clippers arrive later today.

    So our pup is 14 weeks and I’d say our number is 7 or 8 because she isn’t scared, but she pulls her paws back and doesn’t want us to mess with her nails. The sound doesn’t scare her, she just doesn’t like nail trimming or clipping. We don’t want to force her and hold her paw when she’s pulling back, but we are just stuck on what to do next since we are at this impasse.

    You are on the right track in not wanting to force her through this. A 14-week old puppy is very impressionable and, if forced to endure something she fears, it will backfire and cause a myriad of other issues down the road, not the least of which is being able to calmly trim nails. So I appreciate your attention to how she's feeling. That said, I always recommend people be careful about defining how our dogs feel - especially when it comes to things we don't think they are afraid of. It is quite possible, if not likely, that she does, in fact, fear the process, but is complying up to a point with whatever you are doing. My recommendation would be to go back to the foundation of conditioning her to enjoy her paws and nails being touched without a Dremel or clipper around. Then work up to doing the same thing in the presence of the nail tool. Be sure to use lots of treats as that is what you need to pair with the tool in order for her to form a different emotional feeling about the entire process. I hope that makes sense. You are way ahead of most dog owners by even considering this, so I applaud you!! Keep up the great work and let me know if I can help!

    I just cut my dogs nails for the first time today and he doesn’t like the automatic vibrating thing next to much noise and it scares him. The pliers are a lot easier. And I just take the sandpaper that comes with the vibrating thing and smooth it out when I’m done

  • @BigDogMom

    Thank you for the comment, Mike! Yes, the added sound and vibration definitely adds some complexity to trimming with a Dremel. If you go very slow and are patient with your conditioning, they will learn to love it. But you're right, the clippers are fully sufficient, so I'm thrilled that is working for you!

    I have an 8 month old doberman is too late to train her to be calm like your dog? It is such a struggle to get her nails done. I have been taking her to the groomers once a month 😬 I sure wish I saw this video months ago when she was younger😩.

  • @BigDogMom

    Thank you, Karen! Keep in mind the temperament of a Doberman is quite different than that of a mastiff, so please don't worry that there is something wrong with your puppy. My boys are older as well and were not quite so calm in their younger years. That said, one thing that has helped me when it comes to nails is to be quiet and calm myself. When I trim nails, I rarely talk to my boys. It's all about moving and responding to their body language. Dogs don't understand most of the words coming out of our mouths, so much of that is wasted energy. When I first start with a dog, I will just sit still on the floor (with or without a nail tool depending on the dog's conditioning) and allow the dog space and time to come to me. Overtime, dogs will learn to trust you and nails become a lovely, calming experience for them and you. Let me know if I can help more. I'd love to see you be able to work with your puppy versus sending her to a groomer. 😊

    ALOT of talking & No "demonstration" on actually how you physically cut their nails; "up close & personal". With that said...I am in love with how laid back Jr. Is! We have a 12y/o Cane Corso, & a 10m/o & 18m/o English Mastiffs. But our "Old "E's" are still just huge puppies with loads of energy!

    I appreciate the feedback. This is a foundational video with the keys to success that most dog owners aren't aware of. So many jump to clipping and grinding before their dog is ready, which is why so many struggle. I will be doing more hands on videos on trimming nails in the future, so hopefully one of those will better meet your needs. Please let me know if you have specific questions, and I'm happy to create a video around that. 😊

    Respectfully, I have to disagree with your description of how it feels to the dog when you hit the quick ... it's a bit more than a "pinch". It's more like how it feels when you cut your own nails way too short to the point of bleeding. It does hurt.

  • @BigDogMom

    @BigDogMom

    Жыл бұрын

    It's hard to know for any individual dog and certainly depends on how far you cut into it. Whenever I've accidentally nicked a quick, my boys barely flinch. Other dogs may react more. And if I was using a clipper and cut further, I have no doubt you are right about the pain. My goal with this was to hopefully relieve so much of the fear that dog owners have about nails that cause them to avoid trimming. I hope this makes sense. Thank you for your sweet, respectful comment. ☺️
