New here, very impressive , mine get nail trims done by the vet. I’m on number 4. I’ve had two male rescues and my first girl from a breeder. My current girl is turning 8 in July. My last two were 10 & 11 and passed a month a part😞 I called the rescue after a few months because it was so lonely without one. Thanks for great content!

I have a Mastiff/Dane mix and she is not a fan of nail clipping. When she was young we even gave her some pretty strong meds from the vet to try to get her to comply and that was not effective either. As I learned about reinforcement and the importance of timing when giving out reinforcement (ie: treats), the game changed! I know it is a lot of treats, but some I would pre-cut and did a "clip=treat" method for her, giving her a treat immediately after I had used the clipper. I always waited long enough so that the chances of hitting the quick was low. She does not like her back feet being clipped so now I do them first to increase the value of the treats because she has not already had several as she would if I did the front first. We even tried the dremel early on and it ended in a video of her barking at it. Years later we faded "clip=treat" down to a variable schedule of reinforcement of approximately every 3 clips (on average). I decided to try the dremel again just because I had found it in the drawer buried, and she 100% let me dremel her nails without any issues with pulling or anxious behaviors. I gave her a treat every time we finished a paw. I stick with that when I can. The other method is doing what most vet techs do: when the dog is standing pull up the foot like you would a horse and clip the nail. I would then reinforce to hopefully lessen the aversio to the process. Thank you for putting this video out here on what is such a small thing but so important in keeping our pups comfortable and healthy!

Love the nail trimming videos,,,, there's not too many "how to's" on this subject matter~ especially for mastiffs. As quick as their nails grow, I knew this was a 'must know' for me. I started trimming our mastiffs nails when he was a pup. I did this either once a week or every other week so that he got use to the routine. Also, it was less intimidating for me, if I could trim his nails looking at the toe, underneath. To do that I would wait to until he was in his bed, laying on his back, or laying on his side. Also, good lighting really helps. Thanks again Big Dog Mom. Max says "Hi" Junior & Sulley 🐕

So very smart! The lighting is key... I should have mentioned that in the video. Great point! There are some Dremels that light up when they are on. Mine doesn't for some reason... but that is a super handy feature for sure. I will also say that when conditioning it's best to get your dog used to many different positions and angles in case you have to move for a better view down the road. I have found Sulley more sensitive to small changes like that as compared to Junior. Every dog is different.
