I needed this video this week! The pup we have now is the first dog I've had with all black nails. He's got the thick nails too so I always dread trimming. My problem is that I'm too hesitant and it makes him agitated. Actually seeing your technique makes me feel more confident though! I hope someday he can rest like Blue. She's the most relaxed dog I've ever seen 💙

Thanks Amanda! You can get there too! 😊 most of the time it's us as people that cause our pups to have issues with tasks like nail trimming from our own anxiety. With thick black nails, the Dremel will definitely be your best nail friend. Don't worry about being conservative at first if you're nervous and give him lots of goodies in the process. It will put both of you more at ease.

I've just sorta been pushing it off to the side as it got in my view of my dogs' nails...now that I know, I'm much more confident in trimming their nails, as one is NOT fond of it at all, and it's always a struggle. And the "hook" information is wonderful! One of the dogs has all black nails and that tip will make it much easier! I am looking forward to trying the Dremel as well, and I've got them conditioned to the noise and vibration of it for the most part. Blue ivy is beautiful

I like the smaller diameter "cone head" cutter you use, vs a larger dia. drum. Cutter grit, diameter, rpm, and pressure all affect the heat transfer into the nail. Use a cold, sopping wet towel under the paw.

Not sure why people can’t figure out distance to cut nails. Dogs will always tell you when it’s enough. There are nerve endings near the base so the dogs will pull away when you are close. I tend to put my Belgian on her back with legs In the air between my legs this give me a more comfortable position with her. Can also easily reach all 4 paws. This is also a bonding moment for you and your dog I have never had the need to use the clippers on nails as long as your doing the trimming once a month a Dremel is more then enough to trim them down. With a light hand just grind them down switching from toe to toe every once and a while to not build up excess heat. But going back to the first to trim it down. Once I get close the dog will pull away THIS is the limit. Do not go farther move onto next toe until ur done. Once I and dog get use to it, it will take about 15 - 20 min. Then ur good for a month.

My baby, a Jack Russell/Yorkie mix is 13 yrs old with black nails. He would get groomed regularly until 2 years ago he started to become more aggressive and anxious. When he was 4yo, he had back surgery for a ruptured disc and has been in pain on and off. Now that he's older, he's more sensitive. My groomer, I think began to have some health problems so she couldn't groom him anymore. They sent another guy who saw him shaking and said, "Oh, no! He's Yorkie, they're mean. Wait for Natalia." That's when she was out on medical leave. When she told me she couldn't do it, I didn't try to call the company to send someone else. I know his pain. So I started to groom him. Thing is, I'm disabled too. It takes me longer to get to him now. Before if we missed a groom, I just used the nail trimmer with the guard. I have watched several videos on grooming since I'm the one who needs to do EVERYTHING. But cutting his nails, to make sure they are as short as possible to be comfortable, is always stressful. I use a nail grinder and trimmer. It seems I watch videos the day prior to give me confidence to know when I see the quick. SO MANY show how it looks, but as different as their hair color is, to me, it seems their inner nail looks different too. So I figure, no, I know I leave too much nail. And it's become a hell cycle because of my disability I cannot always groom when he needs it, therefore his nails grow longer, the quick follows and the stress is bigger, AGAIN. BUT, NEVER, I mean NEVER have I seen that the groove of the nail is the place to cut. I've heard, it "probably" is a good place to look for the quick. But, NEVER has anyone said cut there and no further. I know I'll feel confident knowing "the bend/groove" marks the spot. I'm SO glad I found your video. THANK YOU, THANK YOU and I know, Shaggy will thank you too!🥰

I like your informative and concise video, packed with great visuals. Our dogs have had trouble and stress with past trimmings, so I have started Dremeling them myself at home. It is still a work in progress as they are slowly getting used to the noise and process. But even after only a few weeks, not only are their nails looking much better, they are visibly less stressed with everything (as am I). Both ours have dark nails (of course🤣) so it's not easy, but we are doing well and on our way to shorter nails. I am wondering how short they should be in the end. Do they just keep growing out and I am endlessly trimming them? I am fine with that, but I am working on getting them to a length where each time, I would trim them back to that length. Any ideas as to a good rule of thumb for healthy nail length? Thank you!

Hi Pam - thanks so much! Nail length depends on so many things - the age of the dog when you start trimming them adequately, how long their quicks are naturally, how healthy the nail beds are and so on. The earlier you start, the shorter the nails typically end up being in the long run. My rule of thumb for the average dog with routine cuttings is that they don't make a click clack sound on hardwoods but rather a dull, faint, tap due to being just slightly higher off the ground than the paw pads. If you lightly trim and dremmel every few weeks, you should be able to get them off of the floor and train the quick back (the quick will recess some with regular trimming and dremmeling to where you can get the nails just slightly shorter). Hope that helps and so glad that things are less stressful for both you and your pup!

I try t grind my Golden’s nails every week. Not always a careful, full trim. Keeps him used to it. One strategy is to just do a front paw. A treat before, a treat during and a treat after. Just a small something. Then I’ll make sure to come back for the back paw later. The other side would be done in the next day or so.

Great video! I feel a lot less nervous to try clipping my dog’s nails!

Wow that explained a lot… I’ve never heard anyone mention the hooked part of the nail. We’ve got a chiweenie that doesn’t get as much outside time as our other dogs so I try to keep his nails trimmed but I definitely need to take more off. I was always just scared I would hurt him. If he's already fearful, you have to break it down into baby steps starting with what you CAN do, even if that is only touching his nail with your finger to start. With dogs that are really opposed to nail trims, I also build in what's called a "start button" to where the dog gets to control when the exercise continues and can signal when they need a break. This helps gives them choice making it more likely they will cooperate with you through the process.

I have 5 dogs. I have a Dremel. However, I as you, use it to smooth off. I'm not sure of my toenail clippers. 3 of my dogs have thick nails and black. I think my clippers put too much pressure on the nail. What type of clipper do you recommend?. A specific brand and/or link would be helpful. Thank you!

When you uae Dremel brand tool... What is the dremel doing ro the nails? Filing? Grinding? Sanding?

We adopted two Hound mix pups. They have more energy than any being ought to be allowed to have. How do you get this to work on a not so calm teenaged dog? Our other two are mellow adults, but these teenagers are wild child times 2!

I really wish I had done things differently with my dogs. My Border Collie- Lab mix goes into a full-fledged panic. FOUR of us tried to clip his nails at the veterinary clinic and couldn't do it. Then I made the mistake of trying it again at home in front of my German Shepherd puppy. Up until then, he barely paid attention to me clipping his nails but after watching his older brother freak out, he won't let me cut or Dremel his either!

Can you do it on a dog that really doesn't like this procedure

When the cone tip gets "loaded up" with grinding material, simply try grinding on a natural gum rubber *eraser*. Large "belt cleaner" versions for all types of abrasive discs and belts are available. They significantly extend belt & disc life, as well as efficiency. An old shoe sole can suffice! Lol!

That cone is made out of the same material as my Dremel chainsaw sharpener. Isn’t the cone more aggressive than a sanding band? I’m worried about that. Also, how long can you Dremel a single nail before it gets too hot?

My puppy is only 12weeks when should I start trimming

I’m still working on getting my rescue dog used to my touching his feet! I try to touch them all often and he is getting better. I put the tools in my hands and touch his toes with them…so slow. He has only successfully gotten his nails trimmed under anesthesia. He tries to bite whoever is messing with his toes. Like I said I’m getting him used to the process. His nails are clicking on our floor and are definitely overgrown! Hoping I will be able to start trimming soon!

When people have surgery like the spay/neuter you can ask to have the dew claws removed and have them cut their nails as short as they can while they are under - this helps a lot. If people's dogs are not as good as Blue, Susan Garrett has several videos on the pedicure please to get them used to it and even has a vet show how she prefers the nails cut especially for those dogs in sports like Agility. So important that you can't hear nails on the floor as they're not walking on the pads of their feet if you can hear nails on the floor. Just have to be careful as it takes time to get the quick back to where it needs to be. Of course the goal is to NOT draw blood. If you don't have quick stop, sometimes corn starch will work.

Sure! Happy to share all of my secrets :) I break it down into very small steps that I know my dog can succeed at so that nothing I'm doing causes alarm or stress (as much as possible) and they are enjoying the interaction. I don't start by trimming the nail the first session, rather introducing the nail clippers as something fun and exciting (oooh - let's explore this new thing together and have some treats while you sniff it and I make clicking noises with it). I encourage the dog to explore the item. I sometimes teach my dogs to offer a paw as a side cue so that they can also have some control over when we clip and when we don't (Cooperative Care). I do a good bit of touching the nails with the clippers and giving a treat for each touch, then over a couple of sessions I I'll start clipping just the very tip and offering a treat (plus a little verbal celebration since my dog likes that). Gradually we move to full nail trims on all paws with a chewie or frozen kong when she's done. You can also incorporate play in between clips to keep it fun. Hope that helps! 😊

Hi Katie! I take things really slow at first and work at the dogs pace. I also only reward or acknowledge cooperation. Some dogs who are fearful never want to step outside of their comfort zone so I make a concerted effort to make venturing out of the safety space interesting and even fun. I do use a lot of treats early on to associate good things happening with working with me outside of their comfort zone and reinforce that they can always trust nothing bad will come of that. It does help to have a well-balanced dog in general when attempting things that might otherwise be scary for them so it never hurts to focus on building those strong parental skills with them through clear communication and consistent expectations. Lastly, when you need calm, try to align what you are doing with a natural calm period, meaning, don't attempt anything difficult when your dog is wired up and full of energy. Play with them for awhile, engage in some physical activity, and then attempt your task like nail trimming. Hope that helps!

what do I do if the back nail that does not touch the floor has grown in? How can I correct that? She is not letting me cut it.

Definitely take her to a vet to help you with that one. It can be quite painful if it has grown into the paw pad and they can help cut it back safely, clean it so it doesn't get infected, and possibly give her some pain medication if needed for the discomfort.

I use the cone head attachment and when dremmeling, use the very tip of the cone to slide under the hook of the nail. Cutting off as much as you can first with the clippers will help too!

My dog would of been in the next county once he saw those clippers...

Blue Ivy is sooooo good. My 2 chihuahuas act like I'm trying to murder them when I trim their nails. It is a totally stressful event for all of us.

Any sort of electric/battery powered high speed sanding tool can impart a tremendous amount of friction/heat to the nail which could cause pain to the animal. Try sanding the top of your own fingernail and you'll quickly find out.

She is very food motivated though so I am trying to train her. No worries - I didn't take it that way :) It definitely helps when you are able to start with a puppy that has no preconceived notions and you can build in a positive emotional association with everything you do. Think about repeating each step you take to introduce the clippers and the dremmel at least 15-20 times. The repetition paired with a reward system (in her case food/treats) can help normalize the abnormal and help deteriorate any fear or anxiety she has with the objects. For example, turn the dremmel on without going near her and toss her a treat. Turn it off. Turn it back on and toss her a treat. Then turn it off. Set it on the ground and let her explore it - as she does so, toss a treat or two down by the dremmel as she's sniffing it to encourage her. If you haven't purchsed a dremmel yet - let her be a part of the unboxing process to where you get her really excited "what is it, let's check it out together" high happy tone type encouragement. Slow and steady wins the race! Keep me posted!

I NEVER CLIPPED HIM, and the nails are short that they don't touch the ground. Every 2 weeks I take my Husky / German shepherd on asphalt parking lot and make him chase the ball 10 times.

Rounding the edges is the purpose of the dremel. Using the clippers takes the bulk of the nail off but often leaves sharp edges so I round the sharp leftover edges with the dremel to finish the full cut. I’ve found this to be the fastest and most effective method for nail grooming.

One thing you didn’t mention and you are not using but should be using is a mask when you are drimmling the nails. When you Dremel a fine mist of nail is dispersed into the air and can get into your lungs this can be very dangerous and harmful to your lungs.

Your 're working a already good nail , work on a dog with 5 months worth of nail.

I have many times :) That takes repetition with only taking a very small amount off each time and shaping what you take off around the shape of the quick. That will help the quick gradually recess over time and you can get the nails down to an appropriate length to where it doesn't impede walking (in most cases).
