I desensitized my GSD to the dremel by using a known click and treat method; except the sound of dremel is the clicker, the treat is high value and is given immediately after dog cooperates. Per nail to start. They also smell the treats to come. "Uh-Oh!" for pulling back and praise for each success.❤🐺

OMG!! This video finally solved a huge problem that actually caused my dog to lose his last home and be branded as potentially dangerous in his permanent vet records. Almost euthanized over his nails! Due to genetics and infected feet as a puppy, my dog has extremely thick nails with long quicks. The previous owner allowed the vet to knock the dog out with sedatives so that they could cut his nails very close every 4-5 weeks. But nothing changed so they kept quicking him and he became reactive and aggressive. They returned him to the shelter at age 3. I spent one year getting the dog to allow me to touch his feet at all and another year getting him to allow a short session with the Dremel 2-3 times a week. I've been doing this for many weeks now. But what finally made the nails recede seems to be process of abrading the nail all around the circumference. "Taking the helmet off," plus some off the sides. He's five and-a-half and his nails are almost normal now and he doesn't fight me. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

YES.....I have a story to add. I was inspired after watching all of your videos that getting that top-of-the-line Dremel would be a good investment. It would save time and money and I could get really good at it!! The first time was the last. It has already been packed up for the return trip to AMAZON. BabyDoll is very good under all other circumstances. His first bath worked out fine. But as soon as the Dremel touched his nail he flinched badly. There was no way that I could continue after that reaction. After he gets up-to-date on his shots he will be going to a professional groomer. They told me that they will clip his nails and then polish them. That's what I needed to here. I am happy to pay to have everything done right. Thanks for your expert advice.

If you get another client with long quicks and are working to recede, can you please film the process and the before and after results when it finally recedes? That would be amazing!!

@@HazeDough I bought sand paper 60 grit at Home Depot and stapled it to a wooden board! Got him to scratch it using treats and it helped shorten it! I can’t believe it took me 6 years to finally get his nails shorter!

This is the most important thing to dog health in my opinion. Properly trimmed nails are crucial! Nutrition and exercise can be tailored to what you want your dog to do but, short nails are a must.

My dogs nails grow INCREDIBLY fast! I've battled her nails all her life, and she's 4. Lol her nails are black, which just adds to it, but I can dremel her nails as much as possible every week, and if I miss just a week, her nails are ridiculous again, and it's like starting all over. I've never just maintained her nails, I'm constantly trying to recede them. Its music to my ears in the rare moment that I've got them back enough that she's not clacking on the floor. Lol

This is my situation right now. Dog with black nails that grow super fast and I finally got tired of taking him to the groomer to spend all my money. So I bought a dremel and I'm nervous but here we are. 😩

Mine too! And he has black nails I have a Very energetic chiweenie and I can't do it myself. My groomer said this would work and I asked how often to bring him in. She said once a month!!

Thank you . Great explanation! I got my wee dog when she was 8. Her previous owner was elderly, & the dogs nails were neglected. Initially I got them trimmed every time she was groomed ( every 2 months) This really wasn’t sufficient. So I learned how to do it myself & now trim them every week (set a reminder on my phone) Her Nails are now much improved.

My elderly rescue dog's nails don't grow fast enough for that! He gets less than a mm of growth per week. I trim them once every 3-5 weeks and the quick is receding very well. And he's building confidence as I trim them every time with no pain and lots of praise and treats. He has jet black nails so it's impossible to see the quick, but I learned a method where you trim very small amounts at a time and watch for the first hint of a dark spot in the middle of the trimmed end. That dark spot is the end of the quick. If you can see it, but it isn't super dark yet, that's the perfect length. If it's very dark, you'll be able to see blood if you dab it with a paper towel and that's how you know you went too far. With my dog, I trim only tiny shavings at a time and so it takes longer, but I never go too far.

@@katiedotson704 I hear your pain....we have experienced several dogs that go ballistic no matter the method of nail trim. Your comment brought a laugh because I know how tough it is. We currently have a big...BIG Alaskan Huskie, more Malamute I think, and nail trim is a tough go. We three team up on him, get him up on a bed so he is comfortable height to work for us, one person feeds a supply or cheerios to occupy while I hold his leg and my son operates the dremel. Works pretty good but he still thrashes a bit and snaps at my hands. He is bluffing, would not bite me hard...this I know, but it is his way of protest. His actions would scare hell out of a stranger!

@@katiedotson704 The hug/snuggle is pure boxer behavior. I’ve had several rescues and a couple of purebreds in my lifetime. We currently have two boxers and two rescues. We got the boxers after falling in love with a huge boxer who was a rescue. He was only with us about a year and a half before passing, but he was amazing. Boxers are the strangest dogs. Our male loves to be held and carried like a baby on your shoulder! They’re stackable. They rarely lay alone. I just lost my husband of 34 years in January. We chose these two together so they’re extra special. I sleep in my recliner instead of the bed and these two will sneak up on my lap in the night. I wake up on the bottom of a dog stack! We also have a husky mix rescue and a small mutt rescue. I’m pretty sure they were dumped. We get a lot of that out here. I put their pictures on lost dog sites, searched the neighborhood, nothing. Nobody is looking for these two precious babies! So, at the absolute worst possible time we acquired (myself and my young adult daughter) two more dogs! I know some only consider dogs a rescue if they come from an organization. That’s silly in my opinion. So, they’d go to an organization, be in another home before getting a forever home, and that’s better how? These two skipped the organization and just found their home immediately. 😂

I’m guessing around 6 months because he GREW. He’s the sweetest thing ever. The little ones a cuddler which I always need. My daughter and I are preparing to sell our home and move from AZ to NC. I can't believe I have found someone talking about this subject. Your video came up in my feed today and so glad it did. I have watched some of your other videos too but this one I really needed. I have used the dremel on dogs for years but didn't know how to make the quick move back. I have been working with longer nails because I had no idea you could get that quick to move back. This is a great video for me and I am sure others didn't know this too. So thanks for you information it really helps. I am starting to set a different Schedule to get our dogs nails shorter.

I've found that if I'm consistent in trimming them approximately every 10 - 12 days, the quicks do recede very quickly. Same for my cats. It's amazing how fast they grow- it's easy to fall behind. I now keep their trimmers out on a convenient table near where we spend time so that I can do a quick trim whenever I think about it. I also found that the right trimmers make a HUGE difference! Too many trimmers just crush their nails doing damage and making the process uncomfortable for the animal. Also, in case it helps you, I keep a bright but tiny flashlight with my trimmers, it allows me to see through their black nails to exactly where the quick ends so I don't accidentally trim the tip of the quick.

We moved to a home that had a large back yard on the water, and a road that wasn't ideal for walking, so at the new place the dogs are always playing in the yard, always on grass, rarely going for walks. I realized after a while that no longer walking on pavement was letting their nails grow so much faster without the filing effect of pavement. Trimming them every 2-3 weeks isn't enough and they grow out like crazy. They also have noticeably different growth rates, and distance from quick to tip.

2 weeks is too long. The quick will be full grown again. Have to do it every 7-12 days.

My first groomer used a dremel on my puppy once a week to maintain her nails. The groomer said she could keep the puppies nails at the proper length by using the dremel once a week. Her quick never got too long and obviously her nails were short also. Thanks for your advise. I’ll dremel my next puppy myself. Starting when they are young helps also.

Thank you. I really appreciate hearing this real world experience and time line. I haven't been maintaining my dogs nails as often as I should (real life) and my most recent dremel had to leave them longer than I'd like (both have completely black nails). Hearing you talk rule of thumb and then also a 2wk-5wk process, just made me feel better. We beat ourselves up when all aspects of our dog's care isn't ship shape, but stress and life happens, we can strive to do better, but we are also ok when we are imperfect. I will strive to do better with this tidbit of better knowledge from your video.

@@petersimmons3654 If they walk in concrete, yes. Mine walk on a dirt track and grass so their nails are so long. They resist nail cutting so they can't walk with long nails and the quick has grown long.

@@deefee701 Mine walk in the woods, they do no concrete walks, they never have their claws rimmed, and they are never too long. They clean their own feet and remove long nails leaving inner layers to conmtinue growing. Think of the layers of an onion. Nature has already invented dogs with the ability to look after themselves, they're called wolves, they never need interferiong hominids to cut their claws or fiddle about with cologne.

Really appreciate this!!! My dog is a senior rescue. He's been given the green light for behavior after some intensive training but he has a history of reactivity and even after the foster was nervous to have his nails trimmed. We've worked to get him used to trimming and the dremel, and now that he's much better we're going to try working his quicks back because with how his legs bend to accommodate his long toenails, I can't imagine its comfortable for his arthritis. This answered so many questions we had about how to manage and what to do. Thank you!!!

The story of your client's bulldogs' nails/quicks was the perfect example I was looking for, in terms of how many rotary tool session it takes to recede quicks. If you're ever looking to upgrade from the Dremel, I highly recommend a Proxxon rotary tool.

Don’t forget to go slowly. Praise for letting you drill. It feels weird! Treats, too! Dog will eventually get comfortable with it. Keep praising and petting..great bonding time. Do one nail a day at the begging…short and fun.

Yes go slowly! You still can overheat the nail and cause pain. Then you are fighting a up hill battle. Not fun. They remember pain. Go from one nail to the other a little at a time then go back with and do a little more, then ,do the 4 again untill you are comfortable with how short they are AND NOT IN THE QUICK. If it feels rubbery stop the next portion is the quick.

dremelling looks so much better than clipping! just the overall look of the nail and also since there isn't rough edges you would avoid getting scratched up by their nails as well as I would think lower the chances of them splitting a nail

Thank you for this great info! I didn't need the dremel tool until I did. Previous dogs got dremeled because it was easier on them. The two current dogs were ok with clippers right up until the moment they weren't (this year). Don't ask my why I changed, getting old sucks. Getting a new dremel tool today and, since "life happens," I will begin working to get the quicks back on all 8 paws and keep them shorter than they have been for too long now.

That’s great info ty!!!!!! My pups claws were getting out of control and I’m sorry for her. It’s my fault they got long. So I went to clip them, BUT knew these k-9s have sensitive pain receptors in their claws that bleed when even nicked, so I used the Dremel and it was like butter. She was comfortable with the sound of my tool, and I was super gentle because I’ll do anything for my pup, and her claws look great! Thx to you. I subbed of course lol

I can't get mine to set still for dremeling. I tried it years ago with no luck. I'm lucky if they let me trim regular. I also am at fault for my older Great Pyrenees. Not thinking about her not getting outside anymore to naturally wear them down. When I actually pulled back her hair on her feet, they were so long and sideways. Her dew claw was circled and almost into the pad of her foot. I caught it in enough time to get it trimmed. I'm now trying to keep up with trimming her nails every once in a while to get the quicks to recede. Her nails appear to have 2 different colors inside so it's hard to tell. Part of the inside looks pink and part looks black. Almost like she has 2 colors of quick. She has mostly white nails except for 2 or 3 are black. So stressful for me not to hurt her. I feel anxiety every time I barely take a tiny bit off at a time. You almost hold your breath and hope for no blood while not letting them see you sweat. LOL

I’m on my third boxer boy. The first two had nails that wore down most easily on their own, and they only got clipped a few times a year. My latest one, even though he has clear nails, and they’re easy to trim his arm, much harder, and grow much faster so he’s a once a month boy. But I can go maybe six weeks or so and still get a really good short trim.

Thanks for your awesome honesty! I have an English that HATES dremel style nail trimming. His do tend to get a bit long before i finally wrestle him down and do them, and his toes do sometimes turn sideways a bit if i let it go to long. Luckily for me he has light colored nails (except for 1 black back nail) so i can see the quicks.

The dog I talked about in the story actually had to be held laying on her back, in her owner's lap, while I dremeled. She was stubborn as all get out but we got those nails done, haha. I wonder if you’re not getting enough material off the nail. You’ve got to be kind of hard on the quicks, in a sense. What I mean by that is, they’re comfortable with a helmet, so you’ve got to take that helmet off so they feel exposed! Then they start to “run away” and recede. I’m planning a “how to make the quicks recede” video… sometime in the next 3 months it should be launching. I hope it will be helpful!

@@daphnerandall4084 it is kinda like cutting you cuticle. Most groomers have a powder to stop the bleeding if they nick the quick. Just be careful not to take too much off at one time.

Some of his quicks are already receding, but I'll definitely be filing them down more so his lil toe that's kinda twisted doesn't stay that way for so long. You're a massive help

@@junipertree6048 No kidding! The way I got my baby used to the clippers and was pretty quickly picked up was actually with food. I'd give him treats for letting me touch his arm with a bare hand, then his paw, then holding it for a few seconds, and after about 5 days he let me touch his paw with the clippers. I'd just rest it there and give him treats for letting me do so repeatedly, until I could pretend to clip his nails by tapping my nails on his. He got used to it with both my fingers and the nail trimmer by day 5, and all I do to make sure he remembers the clippers mean food. I really hope this helps ❣️🥰 Edit: Oh! I also try to make sure I check his paw pads pretty regularly, so that keeps him aware of it being a normal thing to touch his fingers. Lol ☺️

Thanks I have a doberman and he is now seven years old we gave him some traumatizing experiences cutting his dark nails too far he bled.Then due to this negative association we struggled with him nipping yelping freaking out so we put off cutting nails let them get way too long and I swear its been A year or two of trying to get him calm to do it. I finally got a dog nail grinder instead of continuing with the dremel its much quieter and over the past month and a half Im on my third mini session I am working on not only shortening but I have to do very short sessions to build up his tolerance hes still watching his feet ready to be injured and in pain but so far so good

She is getting better about having it done, but it makes me nervous, as some of her claws are black. Your video was helpful. Don't think she'd go for the dremel type with the noise. Thank you for sharing how to properly reced a quick. I usually trim my dogs nails but once a groomer at a chain pet store did it for me when she was in for a gland expression. I usually trim her nails and her quicks were a little long but nothing extreme.I had been regularly dremeling them to work on that. After the appointment I got to the car and noticed every single one of her nails were cut extremely far back into her quick and their was blood all over her paws and legs. Her nails were tender for a while and she even yipped while walking sometimes and the next time I went to trim her nails after they were no longer tender she would scream every time the clippers even got close to her nail before I had even touched, let alone cut the nail. It has been years and she is better about nail trims but still afraid. Before that appointment I used to be able to trim her nails in just a few minutes and she would just rest her paw in my hand while I trimmed them. Even though she is a little better after working with her for years it is still difficult and stressful for her and it shouldn't be. It used to make me cry when I had to trim her nails because the screaming sound she made was so heart breaking.

Uh, I hate hearing those stories, because it’s so preventable! Every groomer makes mistakes here and there, but quicking EVERY nail should never happen in my opinion. If one nail is quicked it should be noticed and the rest of the nails done more carefully! I’m sorry that happened to your dog and made the rest of your nail journey so much more difficult. I've struggled with keeping my dog's nails trimmed due to the stress of not knowing how to do it without accidentally cutting the quick. I have moved on with my boyfriend and his 10 yo pibbully who’s nails were so long and the quicks are so king even when I trim them they still set on the floor and I can tell she’s hurting just from walking! 😢 I’ve tried to maintain them the best I can. She’s not a real big fan of the clipping and we don’t have a dremmel just yet. I’ve been able to do them once a month and didn’t know they could actually recede! So this was encouraging to hear and see! Thank you very much, cause i can tell it’s bothering her!! I’ll let you know how it goes!!

Great video, thanks for the info. I have a dog with long nails that I’m trying to get shorter. I did not know I could do them every 3-4 days but am gonna give it a try. Was doing her nails like every 5-6 weeks.

Thanks for the good video. Nail trimming is always a challenge!! I've done it, hit the quick, then its traumatic for everyone! so this dog I said I'm bringing him into a groomer. well- he was terrified - and I had to carry him into the door for the first -5? times?? now he will walk in on his own 2 feet, but my groomer said- "those are some velasa raptor claws!" and I had been coming in once a month. She recommended every 2 weeks, and thats what we've been doing for the last 6 months- but his quicks are still long! I am having her Dremel instead of clip. im starting to use a scratchboard in between, and it helps some, but of course not the dreaded dew claw or sides as much. So- I wish I had as good fo experience as your client after 3 trims! but - they're still long :(

That’s a bummer! I wonder if the nails are being trimmed CLOSE enough to the quick to actually chase the quick back. I have a video planned on the topic of HOW to chase the quick back. Hopefully it will help clear up some confusion that’s out there, once I launch it. That’s a tough situation because if I were you, I wouldn’t want to call the groomer’s work into question and have someone feel insulted! But in order to chase back the quick, the dremeling needs to remove enough material above and around the quick, kind of exposing it. One way I sometimes explain it is this: The quick wants a “helmet” so when you remove the helmet, the quick recedes.

The first yr of our pups life I dremmell every week or week in half,,, because we have a mastiff pup who grew so fast, sometimes 15 lbs per month & its really important to keep their nails trimmed because it will effect joints & bones how they walk and grow because they put a lot of weight on legs, feet. Also doing the trim at least every week or two helps ease them into getting use to the sound of the dremmel & handling their feet. I also take this time to clean his ears with cotton ball. So he got use to that too. Max is 2 yrs now and I have no issues trimming his nails.

It's important to leave their claws alone so they can do it themselves. You know nothing about dogs, learn biology, study wolves, think for a change. ASrtoifiocioal humans make artificial dogs. How come the strays who survive in such war zones as Ukraine don't get overgrown claws? They revert to the natural state and take care of themselves just as wolves do.

I trim my dogs nails when I notice click-clacks. I feel like it varies how often it is. Definitely less often in summer cus she trims it much more herself, then in winter

Some of my dogs need it every week, and one of my dogs need it every 3 weeks bc his nails grow so slowly. But my little guy... every time i turn around they need done lol. When i met my fiance, he'd never done his dog's nails. Now when i get the clippers out, she pushes everyone else out of the way to get hers done. It took every 1-2 weeks for about 2 months to get hers back to a nice length.

I'm doing this now with one of my Toy Poodles. Her nails were LONG when I got her. I'm using a Dremel type tool and doing her nails every 10 days. They are black, so it's hard to see the quick...but her nails are getting shorter and she's not acting like I'm hurting her.

My Labradane has black nails, so I always look underneath the nails to see where the quick ends to avoid cutting back too far.

I trim both my danes once a week. Not much but just enough to keep them short and used to me doing it.

I've been using only a good clippers on my adopted dog's nails a couple of times per week and the results are visible but very slow (months). Slicing off the top area is a bit difficult with clippers so I'm being conservative and careful not to cause him to be averse to nail treatment (as he previously was). I should have tried sanding in addition to clipping :) Now I have a Dremel and will condition him to accept grinding the nails. Your video helped me to understand the whole process and gauge approx. time line for getting them to healthy length.

BE CAREFUL: The mechanical shaving can get HOT and hurt your pup. Do it slowly and take breaks to let nails cool off. Clipping is dangerous too if you go too deep at once. Every method must be done slow and careful.

@@mariusneumayer4419 Thanks, Marius. I've gone back to using the clippers because I saw how much dust material was thrown off into the air when using the dremel and sanding disk. I might try the sanding drum to see how that goes. I always use high caution, never once on any of my dogs caused a nail to bleed or dog to yelp.

BTW, I've noticed the poor quality of most nail clippers now. More than a decade ago I bought "Bamboo" brand and they are still good. I'll need to sharpen them but after so many years never sharpened, they are still better at cutting than new petshop brands. chose "bamboo because I checked out what professional pet groomers used at the time.

100% agree with both Maintenance and Receeding the quick strategies! Personal experience... Receeding the quick - besides clipping every 4 to 6 days, I make sure they get enough daily walks on hard (pavement) surfaces. This way, they "grind" their nails down a bit more and the next time I trim them down again I see their quick has receded much more. I have a heavier weight dog so my main objective is for their pasterns to also get a great benefit out of keeping the nails as trimmed as possible

Dirt roads and trails are easier on a dog's feet and joints than pavement and still keep the nails worn down. My dogs are active enough that I don't need to do any maintenance nail trimming in the summer. In winter their exercise is mostly on snow which doesn't wear down the nails so some trimming is necessary.

I had no clue that the quick chased the claw itself..So glad I saw this vid before drummeling his nails. My dad used to clip my dogs nail without any sort of emotional attunement so he's gotten highly agitated when his paws are handled 💔 hope to ease him into it . Thank you.

hey!! thank you!!! my dog is 8 and never got her nails done before… so bad. she’s a gsp and she has very very long nails. so sad. i took her only once and the man told me he couldn’t cut that much bc of the nerves n stuff. i was afraid that he bleeded. soooo thank u so much. i wanna start to cut them and i was worried about not getting them that short

Great job on the tutorial. It is definitely encouraging. I just started working on getting my JRT’s nails back to non clickety-clacking order and finding with her nail growth I must do them everyday otherwise I’m no further ahead. Perhaps maybe her higher energy metabolism has something to do with that. Thanks for pointing out thinning down the upper part of the nails growth.

This is why I'm always careful when trimming dog nails. One time my mom accidentally clipped my dog's quick, it made a mess. Not as much of a mess as the time he decided it was a good idea to lick the clippers though.

I'm watching all your videos bc I am scared to hurt my dogs 😭 I know that's dumb but I am . . Up until a year ago I've always lived in urban areas where I would walk my dogs on the sidewalk multiple times a day . . Believe it or not , I never had to trim their nails ! Recently we moved to the country , so daily I drive my babies to these awesome hiking trails for walks instead . Before I knew it , the nails have gotten soooo long . They got a trim at their yearly vet visit but I know I have to do it at home . I bought a dremel , I've tested it and they don't mind it , but I don't really know what I'm doing , especially with my black nailed girl . . . Thank you . I wish I could just pay you to teach me in person 😹 but seriously .

Same with birds you want to make it training fun , keep stress down. Treats , foot play positive reinforcement. Don't push it.. Do every week, not always cutting nails but training use a nail file or dermal. Be patient..after a few weeks to month it will get easier same with beak trimming . Keep a routine Make it simple and fun. Positive result

Big dogs with enough weight on them walking and or running on pavement of some kind will wear down their nails mostly by themselves as long as the big dog is getting appropriate exercise. Older dogs need help. My brother's 65lb pit gets long nails from being in the country or on the beach with no pavement. Just run around a parking lot off-leash for a bit is easier than a dremel. Little dogs need help as they don't have the weight to wear down their nails. My friend has a Chinese crested mutt with maybe jack russell some dachshund (very muttly) Chinese crested have especially long toes and are a special case as you have to leave their nails longer. The bit of dachshund makes his nails thick. This dog needs help bad! Doesn't like his feet messed with at all, either, and looks like he may be having some pain from an injury or something. Thanks for that pic of the clear nail with the quick. That was helpful.

My pittie done every week regardless if needed or not for the handling of paws and the noise and feel of Drexel. Soon he sleep through it!
