Shin splints are excruciating! They can hinder your running and potentially your day-to-day life. So, how do you get rid of them?
Let's first understand where the pain is originating from and the cause before we jump into any kind of solution.
There are two types of shin splints: anterior and posterior. Anterior shin splints causes a pain that origiantes on the outer portion of your lower leg. Whereas, posterior shin splints causes a pain that originates on your inner lower leg.
Posterior shin splints originates from the posterior tibialis. It's a muscle that runs down your tibia bone, and connects to your foot via the posterior tibialis tendon.
Now, pain in this area is casued by either the posterior tibialis or posterior tibialis tendon being too tight. This causes your ankle to roll inward, which will lead to inner shin splints!
NOT GOOD!
What can you do about it?
First, you have to rest and release the tension on that muscle/tendon. Basically, you can do pin pointed scar tissure removal (a deep tissue massage technique) or stretches targeting your ankle area.
Basically, you need to keep your ankle very flexible. That way it won't roll inward during your running and cause you lower leg pain.

It is a good one of a kind guide for getting rid of shin splints minus the normal expense. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my mate got excellent success with it.

    I just started running on the treadmill. 30 min and 3+ miles. Just got my first shin splint and my got it felt terrible! Started icing it and found your exercises and the pain started going away! Thanks again!

    One more piece of advice. DO NOT keep training if you have this pain! I did when i was a senior sprinter in HS and it was one of the worst pains in my life. Seriously. I literally felt like someone hit the inside of both of my shins with a hammer and im not exaggerating. My legs would be so painful to the touch and would shake when i would just stand up. I remember my brother just walked by me and grazed my shin and i just about went to the moon. I would even wake up in the middle of the night from the pain and my legs would hurt non stop alllll day in school. Then i would go to track practice afterwards and train through it making it even worse! After track was over with my legs got better but the pain lasted for 5 more months before it completely went away. Also, you dont feel it while youre running but when you get done/resting.

    charles rob That’s literally me right now. I have a city meet coming tomorrow and I’m running 3 events. I can’t rest because state meet is coming pretty soon so I have to push through the pain. It really sucks and hurts like hell.

    @@Leon12V yeah man im fine now. It was nearly 5 years ago when i was running track lol. But if you're in pain, i strongly suggest that you DO NOT keep running/training on it. Let your body heal.

    I had the opposite problem with feet overpronation and pains everywhere but in the shin. Now I got orthotics and I think my right feet got over compensated , and I have posterior shin pain... great explanation !

    Thanks Aztec Athletics. I'm a new runner but 46yo. Only been running for 8 weeks. Got pains in both legs posterior tibialis in one leg and patella femoral joint pain in other. I'm up to 6 miles continuous running from no running in early October (probably too much too soon). After one round of the suggestions you made my posterior shin pain has markedly improved.     This makes sense. Maybe the cause was that i fought a nonexistant overpronation, by running more on the outside of my foot as you showed. The muscle gets all the kinetic energy, when he is at his tightes contraction, that can't be good for him! I'll try running a little more relaxed in the future. INterestingly, every other video i saw insisted on overpronation as a cause. Your explanation however, makes much more sense!

    when i don’t exercise for a long time (long walks) i get shin splints when i start walking again after a long break. when i get it, i don’t stop walking.. i let it heal. and the body heals itself and i can walk for a long distance without any pain. in my opinion if you have shin splints, it just means you are out of shape.. once you get shin splints and recover, it won’t happen again

    OK, SO I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING HOW TO GET RID OF SHIN PAIN FOREVER. IT HAS GOTTEN SO BAD THAT I GOT A STRESS REACTION IN THE BONE. I JUST NOTICED THAT I DO RUN ON THE OUTSIDE OF MY FOOT BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR MY ARCHES. I JUST RAN OUTSIDE FOR A SECOND TO SEE WHAT IT WOULD FEEL LIKE TO RUN IN THE CENTER OF MY FOOT, AN THE PAIN IS GONE!!!! I HAVE BEEN TO PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR A LONG TIME AND IT DID NOTHING!!     @@fightclub_tutal Not great. I had a job on my feet at the time of the injury and wasn't able to stay off of it as much as I should've. I've had imaging several times since and have been told it's fully healed, but it still causes some pain at times. I've had to stop and restart running several times, slowly building up from couch to 5k each time. Lots of PT and cross training to address any underlying issues. I don't see myself ever running a full or half again, but I'd be happy to consistently run 5k and 10k distances. We'll see.

    I’ve suffered with this problem but only in my right shin. I’ve been working on foot position when landing as you suggested. Hip and glute work as well. I work offshore so could only run on the treadmill. Guess what? No shin pain. Go home start running guess what? Shin splints come back! I’ve worked out why this is from your foot position explanation! I live in rural uk, old country roads bow convex I run on the right side towards any oncoming traffic. My right foot is always therefore landing on the outside!!! Every run shortens the posterior tibialis!

    I have pain near the tendon area like it’s a little below the actual shin and it hurts. Idk if it’s shin splints tho because it doesn’t run up my shin at all. The pain feels like needles going into my skin

    Hi and thank you. Not a runner but my inner shins on both legs were very scared and tight. Just spent 15 minutes a side massaging, now "I will stretch those hips and back (tight) ...which like you said, I believe is the cause of problem".. My shoes, just checked them all, seem to have back heal and then center foot wear. And I do have a good arch to foot.

    I found out that if you just squat all the way down you can feel it stretching. Just adjust your feet till you feel the deep stretch

    i've had the same running form and foot strike for forever now, last time i had shin splints was 2017, coming back to 2020 i have it once again with no change in my form or foot strike, i don't know why this is happening

    I’m the same man. I’ve been running for 7 years now and have run the same way throughout and training has almost always been similar throughout and 2 years ago I had shin splints and I also have them now. Why not ever before and why can’t I get rid of them! How’s yours going

    I have been resting my posterior shin splint for over 6 weeks, coupled with PT sessions and I still feel the discomfort. MRI didn't show any fracture, X-ray didn't show anything either. I'm at a loss on what to do?

    Very informative dude. I got my shin splints thing from jumping hurtles. I land wierd and it hurts. Does this help that?

    Ha! Funny thing! I didn't increase my mileage to too much too soon. I've been running marathons and 50Ks since 2019 and I haven't have this issue until I started to run faster. 😪 I don't feel bad and I only have pain after speed intervals so I reduced speed sessions to once a week only and I'm saying good bye to the possibility of qualifying for Boston because I don't want to get that "ticket" and not being able to use it because this injury doesn't want to go away. I do a lot of yoga (I'm a teacher) and do all the exercises I know for posterior shin splints and posterior tibialis tendonitis and still happens whenever I try to do speed again. The pain is not too bad because I take a day or two off after speed training, keep the ice right after the run and do the trigger point and crossed deep massage the day after. But what I really wanted to say that I loved your video; it has a great flow-rythm, you explain everything very well (I've watched a lot of videos about this topic) and you make it understandable.

    Thanks for your video. You said the problem might be partly caused by the ankle turning Inwards. And you said that a sign of this is extra wear on the Outside side of your shoe. But if the ankle turns inwards towards the centre of the body, wouldn't you get the extra wear on the inside side of the shoe? that is the side of the shoe towards the centre of the body? Thankyou

    My case is same as little Sébastien 😂😂 First day 2km Second 3 km Third day 4 km Unfortunately I started feeling intense pain in my shin bone & muscle But thanks to this guy for giving advice in such a Funny, appropriate & less boring way Allah bless you Buddy ❤️❤️❤️

    Nice informative video, exactly what i have at the minute though guessing its just early stages as I only noticed as I've just bought a foam roller and inner shin was very tender. Weird how i have no pain unless im poking it haha. Would have been good to go into running shoes a bit more.

    I have the same pain but I get them when I do plyometrics and play basketball in some other shoes.

    +umair iqbal Aside from the repetitiveness of running, Shin splints can occur from any type of jumping motion. Typically, basketball players also suffer from shin pain. The same healing methods will apply to you as well. Basically, 1) Resting during intense flare ups of pain 2) Removing Scar Tissue and inflammation by the next methods listed below👇 3) Use a compression sleeve during your workouts or training to reduce shin pain 4) Keeping the muscles flexible through stretching 5) Promote healing and new tissue growth through hot and cold therapy -> New video with a hot and cold therapy method you can do at home: kzread.info/dash/bejne/emefm5euo7WuprA.html Finally, you're shoes play a big role in avoiding or getting shin splints.     i have partial flat feet just nearly flat and i can feel pain in that inner muscle i run only one time in early morning 2.2-2.5 kms and little than double walking and it hurts like hell what to do?

    very useful. simple guidelines....hopefully will help my SS. I started getting inner shin pain when I purchased some lighter/less cushioned 6mm drop shoes....the transition from my 12mm drop cushioned shoes could be the cause....do you agree?

    +waynedrayton Yes and no. Going to a lower heel drop can definitely cause shin splints, but it also depends on your running stride. In other words, how good was your running form before you transitioned. The reduced cushioning will cause your feet to work harder to give you the bounce/pop in each of your steps. If you're more of a heel strikers, you'll tend to feel more discomfort in your heels or shins. Whereas, if you're more of a mid-foot striker you should feel less pain. Typically, if you do feel pain as a mid-foot strikers it'll be more in your inner ankle region & inner shin. So, what does all that mean for you? Basically, try to focus on a mid-foot landing strike, and get your lower legs stronger. Once your legs get stronger, the pain will gradually go away. How do you get them stronger? Simple: 1) Walk in the 6mm shoes. Easy way to build up your feet/lower leg strength. 2) Calf Raises - Knock out a couple dozen on your stairs a few times a week to get your calves stronger to have more bounce per stride. 3) Direct foot strengthening - Ex Try to pick up a towel with the toes of your feet (this one is tough after a few sets!) Bottom line, give it some time, and you'll get used to your new shoes.

    I got tibia fracture back in 2010. Recently, 2 montsh ago i have fall to the ground from 1.8 meters roof. It is 2 months now since that fall, even though i can walk, run, but I've been feeling random dull pain in tibia of my previously broken leg. What should i do and how can i get rid of it? Please help me

    You strike with the outside of your foot but then your foot pronates inward too much
