Hey runners! Let's show you how to fix shin splints - yourself! In this video, Coach Nate provides an overview of what shin splints are, what typically causes them to flare up, how to expedite recovery with a targeted mobility strategy, and finally prevent them in the long term using strength training.

    hey ,if anyone else wants to uncover posterior shin splints try Mackorny Run Fast Blueprint (do a search on google )? It is a good one off guide for getting rid of shin splints minus the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my friend got excellent results with it.

    I tend to get shin splints after 10-15 mins of running and I may not be tired, but my shins can’t handle it. Thank you for showing me that shin splints doesn’t have to limit me for the rest of my life!

    I would also really like to know if this helped you at all. I don't know if my problem even is shin splints but I also start feeling pain in the area after 10 minutes of running, and at that point my soles start slapping against the thread mill because my leg muscles just quit.

    Hey guys. So I completely forgot about this video. But I noticed shin splints haven’t been affecting me as much. I reduced my runs to 3x a week so I have sufficient rest between runs. And they key is not to start too fast. So even if the first km is slower than your normal pace, think of it as a warm up for your shins. In that time I focus on my breathing and I take in my surroundings and before I know it, I’ve run a 5K without any pain

    @@joshua5092 I usually stop running until the pain is almost gone. Luckily for me, it's usually 3-4 days. Just don't make it worse and correst your running form, it will stop bothering you once your muscle is stronger. Now I can run for 20 miles without any pain afterwards.

    I stopped shin splints by walking on my heels for several minutes after each run, I would even do it during the day.

    @@TheRunExperience by just simply walking 2.5km a day on a average speed for more than 4weeks it would help you out...also with some drills that could possibly help to get rid of it and patience to it may take a long time but its worth it.😊

    julian Mcmanaman my pain is just left of the bone that runs down the front of my right leg, it like a constant ache. I’ve been using the technique shown in this video and I already feel an improvement in just 24 hours. I’m still going to give myself a few more days to recover so that I’m not causing a more severe injury

    Wanted to come back to this to tell everyone to take it slow and keep going! I used the C25K app, which uses a walking and running method. Got my stamina and consistency up, the majority, if not all, of my leg pain is gone now, and I’m able to run about 6 miles non-stop right now at a 10 min pace. My 5K is being run at an 8:30 min pace per mile. All to this to say, consistency is key! I’m floored because I was literally limping at one point and I couldn’t consistently run. Just take it slow and build on baby steps day by day.

    Ice is good, stops inflammation but won't stop the root cause of the splints. Ice helps, but stretching is greater in my opinion Hope this helps!

    I have JUST started running this past week. I thought I was supposed to just get out there and run, and then the shin splints began. I felt defeated and angry. So instead of giving up, I remembered that I am a beginner and have no clue what I'm doing and started doing some homework. I found out that there is SOOOO much more to running that just running. I've gotten a lot of information from this page and I really want to thank you. These videos are amazing! I will continue to run and put into practice the things I have learned so far and I will keep learning! :)

    Do you swim? I've been swimming with swim fins for about 15 minutes a day and I think it's helped my shin pain a lot.

    I use to get them really bad when I started running and it was worse in my left leg. I thought it was my shoes so I changed them and it didn't work. What did work was: -rolling out my calves. -walking on my heels and then my tippy toes. -calf raises in the gym. In my own non-medical opinion, I think my calves were tight and weak and they needed stretching and strengthening. I was brand new to running and about 240lbs and this worked for me within in two weeks. My shin splints were gone and I haven't had any for at least 2 years.

    That’s the exact same thing my physical therapist told me to do, it’s just I have to strengthen the muscle below my calf and stretch out the muscle and calf a lot

    I guess shin splints is good for me. When I am running it doesn't hurt , but when I slow down or stop it hurts like hell😬. But the fear of pain after slowing down keeps me going, making me run faster

    I’m a soccer player and I was on the track while watching this video and it really helped me. Shin splints made me weak and tired and I couldn’t walk normally because of it. This is a great video and I recommend it to anyone!

    This video really helped me with my form. After doing consistent days of this, I notice my shins actually start to loosen up! Make sure you check the other videos on running form if you’re still struggling - it took me 2 solid weeks of running slow and being really focused on my form to actually make a lasting correction

    Great tips. From personal experience, my shin splints are now mostly gone by changing running gait. Before I didn't lift my knees high enough with each step when I run which placed great stress on my lower legs, but now that I lift them higher, probably resulting in use of different muscle group for better support, the shin splints have gone away. Besides the usual outdoor jogging, I also use a treadmill daily, set it to 12 degree inclination and do about 1-2 km walk or jog or even sprint (lift knees when jog/sprint!). The inclination walk/jog/sprint has been a fantastic workout for both the Tibialis anterior and Glute Medius, and I notice an improvement to my anterior pelvic tilt too. It's of utmost importance that everything needs to be done with the correct form! In relation to relaxation, I do stretches and one of those vibrational massage guns.

    Wow I really had no clue my coach tells me I should lift my knees up so I can run better but it didn’t occur to me that it can also help my shin splits disappear would definitely have to try!

    THANK YOU!!! I've been battling shin splints since February 2019. I've changed my shoes twice and both times it was a nice temporary fix. My shin splints have kept me from training the way I wanted to. I've been ok the past two months by doing some calf raises and stretching my calves consistently, but they're starting to resurface again. This video came right in the nick of time and I'm hopeful to see how these strategies help me!

    I’ve been struggling with shin splints since October 2018... I had them before but never as bad and I can’t seem to get rid of them for good. Even when my legs seem to feel better, the pain returns once a month when my period starts (which still puzzles me) :( but I do loads of complementary exercises so hopefully with all that it will work eventually!!

    Great tips. From personal experience, to be shin splint free you must improve running/walking gait and find suitable pair of shoes as well. In the past I never had shin splints, but it all started after I made the mistake of purchasing a pair of ASICS GEL NIMBUS. At first I didn't know what the problem was, but turns out it was because the nimbus had too much cushion, which placed extra stress on my lower legs with every step I push off the ground. The shoes also dramatically changed my original running gait for the worse, resulting in me not having to lift my knees high enough which further increased the lower leg load. So to correct the issue to make my shin splint go away, I bought a better pair of less cushion-y runners with better shape and arc support (these days I run with Adidas Ultra Boost or Nike Zooms), and lifted my knees higher again so to use of proper muscle groups for better support. Besides the usual outdoor jogging, I also use a treadmill daily these days, set it to 12 degree inclination and do about 1-2 km walk or jog or even sprint (lift knees when jog/sprint!). The inclination walk/jog/sprint has been a fantastic workout for both the Tibialis anterior and Glute Medius, and I notice an improvement to my anterior pelvic tilt too. It was quite the long journey since it took me a while to figure out what the problem was, but in the end these corrections led me to being shin splint free.     Thank you SO much for this video. It really saved me! I started training for a half marathon and my shins weren't happy at all. I took all of the advice from this video and my shins were completely fine. Ran the half marathon with no pain whatsoever in my shins!

I started a 'shin care' routine (lol, like skin care...) with the steps in this video and I did it every morning, even on my rest days, and within 2-3 days my shins were fine.     Massaging my calves have been such a great cure for my shin splints. Like you said, it's all connected and may seem contradicting at first, but once u start massaging your calves I can guarantee you feel an overwhelming amount of relief.

    It’s my 5th week running and I’m experiencing mild shin splints for the first time after running 2 miles on concrete yesterday. I think the massage and ankle mobility tips will really help, thanks! I also think I’ll need to find a new running location with softer terrain.

    I got that sweet shin pain after changing two out of three of my runs to asphalt course. I usually only run on dirt road, so the hard surface was too much for me. So my tip would be to make sure you are running on something consistently varying. The pain went away after I only ran on asphalt once a week.

    @@fuzzy230 shin guards is what gives me the most shin pain bruh. I am fucking upset, I play bad in matches because by wearing them my calves are so sore and heavy and I can't do anything about it, and consequencely I play really bad.

    I have had shin splints since 2003 in high school. I still run! Learned how to live with it. Compression socks work well and good shoes makes a huge difference! Ice your shins when they hurt and stretch!

    I just started running and at the end of the first week my shin splints are so bad. I didn't realize that's what it was. I couldn't even run yesterday I had to walk the mile and that hurt. I took today off and am learning all the stretches to help myself

    My shin splints are going crazy, I can’t skip trainings but yeah... my legs aren’t literally moving. Football fields are really tough and in competitive matches I am literally dead trying to keep up with the pace of the game. Hope this stuff helps me.

    Finally found it.lol I thought I was suffering alone. I used to play a lot of sports especially football(Soccer) when I was younger but stopped playing as I grew older and barely been having any exercises either, although I do walk quite often. Couple of weeks back I tried running and my shin immediately started hurting after running for like 500 metres. Prolly thought it was because of my lack of exercise and because I was new to running. And now I've started playing football again after many years (I'm 26 now) and on days I can play a full 30 40 minutes without much pain but sometimes I can't play more than 15 20 minutes cause the pain is just excruciating! And the day after is the worse, can't even walk properly or climb up and down the stairs. So I used to numb the pain with ice which I thought worked because it did numb the pain for the moment. And after a day or two rest would play football again and the same would happen. Didn't know this was actually a common injury and could lead to more problem if left unattended. I'm def gonna give a try to this exercises and hopefully it starts getting better!

    @@bifflowman2000 yes yes. I got the results in a month itself. The pain got reduced quite quickly and then it was all gone. I still do a lot of stretching which helps my body relaxed and flexible. Most important thing is when you start running again then keep it short and have a gradual progress along with these stretches. Good luck!

    Having low vitamin D deficiency caused mine! As soon as i took a prescription of high dosage vitamin D, the shin splints went away!

    Hey do you mind providing an update on this? I've had trouble with my shins (particularly the left one for some reason) for about 5 years. I had to cut back on running from 5-6 days a week to running every other day to allow enough rest for the shins to heal. But now I'm stuck on this exercise, pain, and heal cycle that never ends. I found out a couple of weeks ago that I had vitamin D deficiency. Started taking 4k daily units immediately, but so far shins feel about the same during and after workouts. How long till you started noticing results?

    @@BeefPapa i took vitamin D for about 3 months, i felt better after 2 weeks- 1 month it really just depends on your body. I stopped taking it for no reason in particular. Need to start taking it again. It really helped though.

    Aw I never get notifications on here. So as far as I can remember the shin splints went away. I did a lot of rolling of the front muscle of my shin and calf/Achilles. I think jump roping as well. The race went amazing. The first mile I was tight in that front lower leg muscle. But after I got warmed up I was just cruising. I crushed my goal of 55:00 and ended up getting just over 48 minutes. I've since finished a half and am currently training for another.

    I'm a physician and a runner and a wrestler!! what i can tell you about this specific issue, which i experienced myself while i was running my 1st 10k is the issue is very simple! your bones and muscles are not that strong yet and you can either chose the easy way and increase pressure gradually and avoid it at once or you can do what i did and feel the pain. but never forget that you definitely need some recovery time depending on your workout intensity.

    I started running to keep myself active during quarantine (since I can’t weight lift) and prepare for Air Force basic training and this pain really pissed me off. It’s probably due to me training all my other muscle groups in the gym except my calves. I’ll try this. Thank you

    Actually, when I first got the Splints, I rested for 2 weeks and they went away for a little. A week after I went back to football ⚽️ and lifting and they came back. I think it's just for overworking the legs which the calves take most of the weigh

    If you are overpronating too much, you most likely cannot stretch your way out of the pain. Maybe keep it under control, but not get rid of it. What may help, though, is to go to a orthopedic and get a customized inlay sole to straighten up your foot a bit. That can be enough to solve the problem, or at least minimize it.

    I have this same problem and I went to the physical therapist and he recommended the SOLE medium running insoles and a stability running shoe ( basically a shoe that doesn’t bend in the middle). He also told me to do certain excercises that would strengthen the muscle surrounding my shin and to also stretch out the calf muscle a lot. hope this helps 🙂

    So glad this video was on my recommenced. I started running 2 weeks ago, 3 times a week, for 30 mins. And the last couple of times I ran, my shin was hurting in the first couple of minutes, then I couldn’t feel the pain during the run but after I’d get home I couldn’t even touch them. I hope these tips help, I’ll be using this video regularly now. Also, I wonder how KZread knew 🤔

    @Charles Heath '20 hello , i suffered for over a year from the shin pain. I tried to stretch my muscles with a foam roller and i can say that helped me a lot. After watching this video i will try this methods too and to see how much will work. But i think every person needs his/her time to fix this shin problem. The most important is to not push our muscles to the limit. If we feel pain we need to relax .For the moment i'm ok but sometimes i feel pain. i just rest and stretch my muscles at least 3-4 times / week ( 15-20 minutes)

    I have a 100k in a month and I've got shin splints. I bought a bicycle and I can log on many miles without pain. The foam roller and exercises helps. Great video!

    I’ve enlisted a few days ago with the Marines but almost immediately after singing my 4 years I started to experience these horrible shin splints. It has actually been worrying me a lot recently and I need to fix this before I leave for boot camp. I wanted to say that this video is extremely helpful and hope that this small recovery is swift because I’m on a little bit of a timer. Any tips to slightly speed up the healing process?     @@TheHamoody100 as of last week I have completed gotten rid of my shin splints. I still run about an hour a day and my shins feel a lot stronger. The combination of actual rest and stretches helped me heal, before and after every run I stretch them a healthy amount and letting my shins heal over time helped 100 percent. Took two weeks but I’m back on track
