I can't speak for everyone but I can speak for what keeps ME motivated as a natural lifter. I fell in love with the process as a means of therapy and discipline my mind. Setting lifting goals and getting to my new body composition keeps me In a bit of tunnel vision on myself. I get a dopamine release while lifting and even a while after. I do go to guys for tips on muscle activation as well as setting up certain grouping of exercises but idc if they are natural or not because I know they still need to put the work in and regardless if they are natty or not it does nothing to help me make my own gains only thier guidance and knowledge can. At its core its the process AND seeing all these hours of trial and error on what MY body responds to best and what keeps my joints the healithes that keeps me motivated. I try different exercises I think might work if it makes sense just to see if I can add it long term or atleast break the normal groupings of exercises to keep it fresh. I will add that I do have VERY good not elite genetics for adding muscle effortlessly as well as strength. The problem was I did it dirty bulk style as early on I was of course dumb on how to put on lean muscle on not focus on gaining weight itself and that was for football. I understand where I am and what I can do and comparing myself to anyone else dosent really matter in the end. So what if my genes are better than many that make me a douch by point that out.

As a natty that's been training for a year, when I first found out that Dr. Mike it was a bit disappointing but quickly it made a lot of sense and I got over it because of the quality of information he puts out to keep people going. Both of you speaking openly about your experience on both sides is great perspective and more people should be honest about the process.

    - keep a workout calendar, where you can see every day you've gone to the gym. Seeing all those days in a row makes a person want to keep going. - find the loudest, most aggressive music you like to listen to. This will increase the intensity of your lifts, and making lifting more fun.

I've been working out for a year now. I lost a little under 60 pounds and then started to try and build muscle. Even at 43 now I'm very surprised by the muscle I have grown. Have I gained the muscle like those on PEDs? No. Am I growing muscle the way a 18 year old could? No. But by following the advice of Jonni Shreve and Dr Mike I am happy with my results. It's amazing what happens when you work out before and do everything wrong and then try again and try doing things correctly (properly eating, proper technique in gym, etc).

This is a great video. I remember seeing those grainy black/white photos of Dorian Yates back in the early 90’s- I allowed them to ruin my bodybuilding career, scared me away. At the time the fitness industry did not have the variety of classes for all to enter nor was KZread even a thought. So the point is don’t lose out on being your best like Jonni said. If you give up on striving for your personal best opportunities may pass you by…however, better late then never. Good luck, train hard. Thanks again, Jonni!

Jonni, what you said is on point and makes perfect sense. Where the issue of following enhanced fitness influencers is honesty. You and Dr Mike don’t mislead people on your steroid use. Also, as you know, there are health issues associated with the use of enhancement drugs and depending on how you acquired the drugs it could have been illegal. Dr Mike has talked about this before. Young folks need to understand the risks and be under a medical professional’s care to ensure it’s done within “safe” and legal limits. Some enhanced fitness influencers don’t have the same experiences as you and try to sell their physique as completely natural. This leaves a bad taste in peoples’ mouths.

I was on and off gear from 20 to about 35, only cycling for about 12 weeks, 2x a year. As you get older it gets harder to cycle off. Even while you PCT you feel like garbage. You do get back to a "natural state" but it takes a long long time. After my last ever cycle of Tren, Dbol, and sarms, it took me 18 months to get my normal functional hormones levels back and I needed a doctors help. I still look great naturally but performance enhancers make you bigger, stronger, and more vascular. That's reality. You can look great without them but it's night and day on and off the gas. My honest opinion, if you're not into professional bodybuilding, don't waste your money and time with steroids. They're very hard on your body and are not worth it in the long term.

I think motivation comes from within. I've been lifting for 30 years, 51 now, and at my peak as a natty. As I'm still making great gains, motivation has never been an issue. I love my 2 to 3 hour workouts and really detest rest days, though they are necessary of course. It would be nice to press 4 plates, sure, but I'll take pressing 3 (I'm about 5 pounds away) at a bodyweight of 170 pounds without resorting to gear--I see most people at local gyms struggling with one or two plates, lol. You can get pretty far in terms of strength and size with just old fashioned hard work. Look at it this way, a lot of of people play football, but don't get discouraged because they see monsters in the NFL. I think it's motivating to see people at the top and see how close you can get. People worry what too much what others think of them these days. Just stick to you vs. you, and you will be far ahead of the pack excepting maybe a few total lifting freaks who are outliers.

If the juiceheads are throwing your game off, you have insecurity issues. Resolve that, and get on with your life. I'm a bodybuilder (natural), and I train at a gym with a lot of other bodybuilders. There's a good mix of different classes at various degrees of enhancement in there. The only difference in outcome is that the enhanced can get bigger. Nothing about being natural prevents you from attaining great proportions, balance, and symmetry...the actual practice of bodybuilding. I'd say if you're concerned with who's on gear and it's affecting you, you have serious gaps in your training knowledge and likely have your priorities and goals in the wrong spot.

The 1% genetic difference refers to overall genomic variation, but for specific traits like body shape (e.g., wide shoulders, narrow waist), genetics play a substantial role. Genes influence factors like bone structure, muscle development, and fat distribution, significantly impacting physical appearance in areas such as bodybuilding.

Asking how to stay motivated while lifting and not taking steroids is like asking how to stay motivated while trying to make money without stealing. If you’re taking steroids you are stealing results you didn’t work for. As far as worrying about how you look? In real life there’s nothing good looking about how guys on gear look compared to the guys who are just flat out in good shape.

Staying motivated when you are younger and already have high T levels is much different than when you are working full time, have a family and over 30. Nobody mentions most of these influencers it is their job to workout too. When you can design your day around lifting, it is a huge advantage. I keep on hearing the genetic reason. All the guys at my gym who are on gear you can instantly tell. I don't think it is a "genetics" that every single one of them is benching over 400 and looked like they are on juice. Steroids are obviously a short cut with proven results even if you don't have good "genes". Nowadays, if you are over 40 and jacked, I automatically assume the person is on trt ha.
