Yes the genuine ones are overpriced but you have to remember that the companies pay millions to do research and development of these watches, the replica companies simply copy them, they have no innovation. There are also advertising costs, paying Swiss workers high salaries instead of Chinese low salaries, paying for advertisements, paying for high end machines and factories. The genuine watches will also be worth something in the future and for some brands like Rolex they may even go up in value, you can leave them for your children when you die. But the replica does give you 90% of the enjoyment for a fraction of the price of the genuine.

It’s really not ‘for nothing’. If you set aside the gold plating, diamonds and the rest of the flash, the old guard Swiss watches (Universal Genève, Rolex, Patek Philippe, etc.) are definitely superior timekeepers. One metric: they are each calibrated / certified by independent labs, for timing accuracy and repeatability. Rolex, in particular, makes watches that are exceptionally durable. The quality under the hood is very much there, vs mass market Swiss watches (which are still quite good) or Chinese clones. So, they do have their place. There’s also the investment angle, but that’s a separate matter. As a fashion statement, I say buy whatever catches your eye.

a fairly really good made replica watches can almost cost more then half of the original luxury watches. They are put together by watch makers and trying to mimic the real ones. The most important aspect of a fake one is making the movemengs look the same. They can likely make a replica watch about 80 - 90 percent the same as the original but by doing so, the price will be so expensive to make , it's not worth it for them to sell .

The fake Hublot and the real Hublot are worth the same :’D

When I saw the hublot I came looking for this comment I was like they’re both fake by a G-Shock God tear

I personally don't own any replicas but I do have homage watches and one of my favorite homage is the steinhart 42mm.I love the design and look of many luxury watches but wouldn't mind a homage version with seiko or miyota or a cheap Swiss movement, as long I was getting the look (never been into the movements) I'm a car guy too , now that is something I want to the inside (engine performance) to be top notch and would pay accordingly.

Tbf, Hublot looks like a cheap knock off no matter how high the retail is.

What gave the fake Hublot away for me was the rim screws that are too close to the outer side of the rim. Where as the genuine Hublot has the rim screws perfectly centered. But other than that you are right. The real Hublot's finish is rather crappy.

If you know what you are looking for in the replica it is very easy to identify it.

I went 5 and 0! 👏🏾 Going off of Laif's tips helped but my eye kept pulling towards the real one each time. The final one was just lucky guessing (I couldn't see close enough to see if there was a 2nd Cartier signature). This was fun!

As long as it tells the time and the one who gifted it to me meant well, I don't need an expensive luxury wristwatch. Besides, if it's real, it would end up with most of my actual heirloom jewelry locked at home anyway, I wouldn't risk wearing it in public or everyday.

Rolex watch cost 1000$ years ago now its 38000$. Its pretty good investment but funny thing with Rolex watches they limited and you have to prepaid which put you on special waiting list even after that you cant be sure you get the watch. This make them so prestige but not only this of course.

Because you'd keep it at home and never use it, kinda indicates the different class/lifestyle you lead. I'm guessing someone with more money than they know what to do with, would just wear any insanely priced watch all the time and not care if it got scratched or banged necessarily.

Nobody "needs" a luxury watch, just like any luxury item. You just "want" to have and/or show you can afford it. That's what luxury is all about.

This is why you always have a third party authentication done you just never know unless you've handled thousands of something sometimes

I kinda feel like this guy was setup to fail, there was no real way for him to know what to look for without knowing the signatures and characteristics of the brands. Its like looking for a spanner without know what a spanner is in the first place.

I disagree somewhat. There's a level of "fit and finish" that a person can recognize depending on how appreciative they are of fit/finish IN GENERAL and for lack of a better term (and in no means am I trying to insult or disparage) he simply had a lower standard of what he felt "good/expensive watches" are supposed to be. As an analogy it's like with audio - people with sharper ears can hear the difference in audio quality even if they weren't familiar with the actual music they're listening to. It's that sort of thing. So not really his fault - but I'm of the sense that if you're trying to understand anything luxury - at the very least you need to have some sense of what makes an object exude luxury. He simply didn't have that sense. While there are super replicas that require you to check the movement to really know the difference. The examples the expert showed him have enough glaring differences which all you needed was a sense of what looks "nice". Even that last Cartier (with no basis for comparison) - which is a model i'm not even familiar with - without even going to the caseback you can see the date window was horribly misaligned with the cyclops. Something that would've never passed QA of a real brand worth it's salt.

Buying a fake is not only dishonest, it can even be illegal.

This showed nothing but the producer can be fooled by the most terrible of knockoffs and nothing about truly spotting a fake. The Seamaster should have an open back where you can see the balance bridge of the coaxial movement. Yes the super fakes now have a balance bridge, but they are not free sprung, so they have a second regulator.
