Been playing guitar for almost 20 years. Just now got my first bass, believe it or not. So much fun! Even though all my dexterity, finger stamina, muscle memory and all that jazz, I´m approaching my new instrument as if I´m a complete beginner. I wanna get things right the first time, properly! Yes. C Mixolydian is the V scale/mode of F Major/Ionian and the C7 Chord is formed from the C Mixolydian scale. That's where the Bb in the chord came from. you can run the Bb Lydian scale, the D Aeolian scale, the G Dorian scale, etc. any mode of F Major or in the context of this video, any mode of C Mixolydian since C is the root note here, not F.

Wait wait wait. Just blew my mind. So you just basically said if I know I’m starting in mixolydian I just need to play up two scale degrees and run the locrian pattern from there? So help me figure out that I’m in C mixolydian? Is it literally matching the chord tones and doing the arithmetic?

Yes. The chord written & spoken as C9 is a C dominant 9, comprising the 1st, 3rd, 5th, flattened 7th, and the 9th (counting from the root note). If the 7th were to be natural (not flattened) the chord would be written as CMaj9, spoken as C major 9, and comprise the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th.
