How to Score as an Unathletic Hooper (Breaking My OWN Game Down)
Спорт
After all these years breaking down the greats' games, I figured I'd take a few minutes to mess around and break my OWN game down. Not only was this just a fun process as I rarely watch my own film, but I think it's super applicable to a lot of players out there who may not be the most athletic!

I am coming back from a spinal problem that put me in a wheelchair, and it has taken me everything to learn how to move again and play again. Due to my loss of athleticism, I work out even at night, doing stretches, lunges, everything to make me stronger and faster, regardless of the pain involved. When I come back to full capacity, I will come to one of your videos to thank you Coleman Ayers. I am continents away from you, but am consuming your content like you are my coach. I don't know how, but major rewards are coming your way soon, due to the unseen effort behind the camera and even the court that you put into your work. Keep grinding Coleman, don't lose the grit. Stay blessed.

Love this. As a 42 year old who can still hang with the young guys, I've seen myself gravitate to a lot of this kind of stuff over the years. Like they say, "Old age and treachery beats youth and athleticism every time." Well, not every time. But enough of the time to keep me playing.
This was so inspiring to see. Thank you for all your great videos. Much love and appreciation from a fan from the otherside of the world. I hope you feel happy and proud knowing that your videos has reached and helped hoopers all the way in Bangladesh. Peace!
Thanks for this video. This definitely helps undersized guards like me lol. It’s also cool to see a coach who can get a bucket 👍🏽

Super dope video that's really helpful. Thank you man!
Cool video, very informative. I am an unathletic basketball hooper and I get buckets. My unathletic bag is deep! It's knowing your limitations and never try to do more than you can.
This is one of the most useful training videos I’ve seen
Love this kind of content
trying to get my son to watch your vids instead of the youtube basketball greatest moments etc vids he watches, you have a brilliant way of making sense of the game.
Coach thank you so much for these videos
My knees have been destroyed for a couple years now and my quickness and vertical are just gone. I'm still playing a lot and my game basically turn into solely jumpshooting since I couldn't get past defenders anymore. After watching this you made me realize I need to use my off arm more. So many times I would change my speed to get past defenders after a cross and they were essentially just holding me, giving me light pushes so I couldn't get past. Plus I was never the strongest. But using my off arm is going to help so much I can already tell. Cant wait to try it tomorrow.

how did your knees mess up, and what advice would you give another person to keep their knees?
Love the videos man
Really enjoyed this video! I've always been one of those players who thrived off defense way before coming into my own offensively. I liked what you said as far as change of speed especially. Growing up I never made it to any high school let alone jr. high level ball aside from being a equipment manager who was able to scrimmage at times. (Otherwise just playing pickup with friends who made it to that level, going further, etc.) I was a late bloomer and have been a little more on the athletic side, but there's times I go places where my athleticism pales, so I lose confidence in terms of what I can do on offense (aside from some post game haha.) Definitely going to try some of these things and hopefully get some offense going again. (Especially the attack off the hang dribble.)
really appreciate this man
love this video, and many of your videos i've seen. Thank You! Watch out for the hang hesi's to not become carries like at 5:00. I'm not saying I do it any better though! I would love to get more shifty with the poise you display here.
Watched a lot of Steve Nash during the 7 Seconds or Less Suns. Good guy to watch to get buckets.

Cole, hit up Vancouver Canada sometime man :) I do a little after-school basketball training for kids who haven't played sports before, to help spur a love for the sport in the 1 or 2 kids who take it, and to help build confidence and self-esteem. But I think a scientific and broken down program like this for more advanced players would be awesome.
You mentioned the foot tap but the importance of footwork and body positioning needed to be highlighted… These aren’t just ways to score as a unathletic player these are just high iq plays, Like how most defenders don’t really move the feet just use the arm to try to slow and match your pace and when you knock that arm down it essentially finishes the defender …once you get a defender on your hip he’s now a hostage… Great video..everything mentioned in the video is Trae young
Something for me thanks man🙏🙏 Love from india🇮🇳
As a fellow slow(unathletic) hooper just learning to do all these things outta necessity made the game fun for me stuff to work on add and learn how to beat different styles of defenders. Just improved my bag and 1v1 IQ. I got to point where I prefer footwork skill and a deep bag over raw athleticism.
I really love the content and I have used this to get better at basketball but I do lack at on hall defense and being lowkey while locking down so it would be a big help if you did jose alvarado
I agree with the off-arm. I try and not utilize it as much but I will play as physical as they play me.

Solid vid bra. I’d love to hear yr thoughts on J Brunson game
one of the things i've been practicing after looking at luka and jokic's game is pivot foot shenanigans. the step through where your pivot foot leaves the ground and everyone likes to call traveling on nba twitter is a great technique to throw defenders off guard. ain't traveling till that pivot foot touches back down so you can literally karate kid on your defender if you... wanted to i guess.
Great video man
The quick release and surprise or off-balance shots have kept me competitive on most courts. I have always been the shortest player on the court, and early on I only used speed and quickness. As I have lost all that I use a lot of quick release and surprise moves. Using the left in situations that nobody would. Awkard footwork and off-balance takes have kept me in the game.
Great video!!

as i watch this video I notice how coordinated you are! could you explain or make a video on how hoopers can be coordinated when they aren’t that athletic because at least i believe coordination can boost your game exponentially!
lemme just say this no matter what height you are having a bag is probably the most important thing. what a bag can mean for your position can vary however it is still valuable to know how to score with a multitude of moves.
From one unathletic guy to another, putting max effort on every play makes up for certain deficiencies. Ball is life. 🏀
Great tips

I'll be 40 this year. I always had a quick release that I have not been able to maintain over the last few years due to age and muscle elasticity. As a result I went from a deadly shooter to a brick layer. Any advice? I don't have the time to put in the gym and learn an entirely new shot and its hard to resist years of instincts.

Nice! Could you do a camp in Mumbai?
🔥🔥🔥
Great video but could you give any advice to an under-athletic power forward like me, who is even slower and even less athletic?
Do you video links for drills you do for these change of speeds etc ?
I would like to offer an alternative approach. Basketball athleticism is actually very simple. Especially compared to other sports such as football, hockey, etc. Your explosive movements in basketball are the first step, jumping, decelerating, and lateral movements. Those can be achieved with these exercises: Box Jump, straight jump, jumping rope (emphasis on calf bounce, no rope needed), quad extension machine, and leg adductor/abductor machine (emphasis on abducting). You dont need to lift any weights at all and you only need access to two basic machines. Planet fitness has them. You can be very lean as a basketball player but as long as you are explosive in these movements you can be very effective. Unlike other sports where size is a huge factor.
Can u make attention to detail on Jordan walker or Antoine davis
Can you do a jump higher technique please 🙏
Will have any camps in Atlanta ga this year
thx
Watch jj barea saw him on person he's like 5'7 not even close to his listed on nba site (6'0) he is underrated people always talks about nate robinson and isiah thomas when i comes small great players but no ones talks about this guy
This is me! Slow, unathletic, and short, the trifecta lol. But I gotta improve my shot off weird angles, that will definately help alot.
you should do how to dunk as a 4'5 unathletic hooper
100% relatable
Look up and scan the floor for your teammates with the pass, change of pace and ball fakes, and be a sniper from 3! 🎯 🏀
Hey coach do u have any camps In New York?

if you unathletic and not tall the highest you going is college or get a jump shot like trae young and a good handle and be creative or else you have no chance you need limb length or athleticism and and if you don't got this then height, but is you got all three well that's what makes a good prospect and skill is just a given,
Do you miss to left side more when you shoot? I see you kick your right leg more on your jumpers. I do the same and feels like that’s causing problem for my jumpshot.
@0XxBesTofTheRestxX0

Leg kicks actually help your jumper. Depends if you are fading or not. Spot up shots shouldnt be using a leg kick but on fadeaways it is needed for balance.

Haha for sure! Here’s the thing. Any of these breakdowns are only the first step. Once we’re on the court, the game happens too fast for us to magically apply things we’ve learned through our slow-thinking processes. We’re so focused on competing and winning that we resort to our habits. I’d suggest training on all of these in a 1v1 or maybe 3v3, while trying it out by yourself at times, then working your way up to the point where you don’t have to “remember,” it just happens!
Damn it was like watching a breakdown my game... crazy 😂😂

It is because you lack one-foot stability. Perform lunges as your main exercise, then when comfortable, add weights to the lunges. Your legs will feel stronger and explosive over months. I have been there too
💯💯insane content
I.Q. develop those instinctive moves, less dribble less mistake it all comes to practice exposing yourself to tough competition and watching NBA
I have the skill but my confidence is not there in 5v5’s. I just put my team before me and one mess up messes me up ngl

Asdad start running consistently to improve your speed and mobility. Not for the purpose of losing weight, but to become faster. Take a break if you want from hooping, and decided the next one month, you will practice running and sprints. Then practice exercises for mobility. Set a 6 month goal for this. Movement will start feeling easier. Your hips which seem to be tight, will open up. Just be consistent with this. Don't focus on high reps, no. Just consistency. Add plyometrics too. Then be consistent. Let speed and mobility be your goals this year.
2:49 *MMMMMM* 🔑
Step 1: develop a consistent jump shot.

NBA has massacred the purity of basketball with 4 steps, carrying, "gather step", crab dribble, and flopping.
I feel like the solution is to just hit the gym. Unless time prevents this from happening of course. I say this because I’ve found bodybuilding to single-handedly automatically improve my game. Something about the body control and mind-body connection that just improves the game.
