After experimenting with pair of 6-inch diameter handheld mesh sieves on a couple of roasts, I got tired of how much shaking I have to do and the lack of visibility, and I can't use my infrared thermometer on the mesh. Right now I am gonna experiment with a flour sifter, but gravitating toward this type of stovetop popper since it would be very easy to take the bean temperature and I can actually see the beans clearly, and the conductive heating should simulate a drum roaster better. P.S. does your hood vent outside? All those fumes cannot be good for health.

Yes you can! Be careful if you're roasting over wood or charcoal. You'll most likely need to remove from the heat often, so not to burn your beans. Good luck!

For smaller amounts I use a hot-air popcorn popper to roast my coffee. It works pretty well. But I will consider getting the Whirley Pop.

I'd recommend the Victorio. Look it up on Amazon. It's much better. The Whirly Pop is fine, but gets hot too fast. You have way more control with the Victorio Popper and it's heavier, making it much more sturdy on the stovetop. Just my opinion.

Thank you super helpful! I just roasted, using your tips, a Tanzanian Peabody that (at just day 2) is the best cup I’ve ever had.. even though due to inexperience I remember over roasted to a French roast instead of the City to City plus it called for. So, a much welcomed accident as it tastes better than the batch I roasted correctly. But I was wondering which beans from Sweet Maris are your go to beans? There’s so many and I’d like to not be in an experimental phase for a year:) thanks so much!

I'm glad you found that video helpful, Matt. I currently have upped my order sizes and found it's cheaper to order from Genuine Origin, rather than Sweet Marias. That said, I really paid attention to the cupping scores on Sweet Marias as a guidepost. From there I could always roast to their recommended roast level first before experimenting. I'm a big fan of more citrus and tea flavors in m cup, so I lean toward Ethiopia/Kenya, but that doesn't mean a Tanzanian Peaberry can't have a similar profile.
