How To Reuse A Keg SAFELY - Vent, Open, And Re Use A Commercial Keg For Home Brew
I got sick of seeing videos of people jamming screwdrivers into the top of a highly pressurised container so thought I’d show you how to do it using a tool which is readily available online and only costs about £15
I should probably say before anyone jumps on my about it, only use this on kegs that you legally own. That said, as you can see there’s no damage caused to mine so I suppose I could just put it back together and hand it back if I needed to!
No Penny in this video because I was full of illness when I filmed it. Probably explains all of the heavy breathing!

You're going to want a hammer or mallet of some kind, something to wedge against the nubs on the top of the spear, and obviously the keg connector. Additionally, a caulking gun and something a similar width as the ring you want to push down.
This video was made using a Sankey keg. If you have another type of keg you're struggling with drop a comment and I'll see what I can do.

It's more easy than that. Depressurize the keg with the coupler, remove the coupler, place a coin that fits over the bigger ring, re-attach the coupler and voila! Job done. No caulking gun, no special tools needed.

once degassed use an cheap double end basin wrench, the small side fits perfect into the nubs, a 5p piece in the spear and a sanky fitting works too

Thank you for the video, can the old valve be reinserted back into the keg or is it not reuseable?

Yes, it doesn’t damage the spear and you can reinsert it.

Thats really interesting. If you were to buy a commercial beer in Keg, is it just a case of returning it with the spear intact

That’s what I’ll do when I’m finished with it.

@Oyster Boys Brewing Co. never considered it as I always use 19L corny, great idea for a larger brew 🍺

It was handy maxing out the Grainfather and fermzilla all rounder with a 28L lager and not having to split it into several different kegs.
