How To Use a Keg Coupler

With so many more people installing home bars and draft systems, we at Keg King are getting a lot of questions about how to go about setting up and using keg couplers. All couplers deliver gas pressure to the headspace in the keg while also allowing beer to flow out of the keg spear and into the beer line that attaches to your tap system. This video will showcase how couplers can be assembled with the beer/gas lines and then attached to the keg.
To choose the right coupler, check first to see what style of keg the brewery supplying you is using. There’s lots of varieties, but the most common for us is the D-type coupler or the A-type coupler. There are other varieties more common in other countries across the globe.
We’ll also cover a few additional coupler attachment options that make assembling and changing over your coupler easy.
We’ll show you how you can attach ball lock disconnects to the coupler with post adaptors, adapt the barb fittings with push-in fittings for the beer and gas lines, and make the taller A type kegs fit in our Keg Master Series 4 Kegerators with a Low Profile Elbow Bend.

Quick side note: In our opinion, when it comes to adapting the gas side of the coupler with 5/8” post adaptors for ball lock kegs, use either the seal that comes with the 5/8” post adaptor or use the duck bill valve in the coupler. You don’t need to use both at the same time.

This is awesome. I have a kegerator with quick ball disconnects. I got a paulaner keg and didnt have the A type coupler. I watched your video and followed it exactly.

Trouble shot a type coupler on kegerator
How do you remove the A type coupler? I've release mine but it seems to be stuck
My coupler has a little bar with what looks like a key ring on it. It say pull out before tapping and I didn’t see you do that in your videos. Probably because they were different couplers. Is this necessary to avoid too much pressure build up? If so, at what stage do I pull it out while attaching the couplet?

Some couplers have a Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) built into the coupler. These are handy to have in some situations, but in some cellar scenarios, people don't want CO2 Gas seeping into their low point keg areas or cellars. Our couplers don't have the PRV for this reason, but some designs do include them. Leave the PRV closed until coupled ensuring you are attaching the coupler at the right pressure. In the event that you over-pressurise, you can turn off your gas supply and pull the PRV to remove excess pressure in your keg's head space.
Great video! We are totally new and green to this! We bought a used kegerator, it came with two taps and plastic tubing running down inside, that's it, no fittings, not valves, nothing else. we bought D-Type valves/couplers from Amazon but the gas and liquid line barb fittings on the new these do not fit the plastic tubing already in place, the tubing is too small. I love the ball lock fittings and also the DM or diem fittings, but do not know what size or adapters to to get. We have the gas tank also with two gauges, but of course we don't know what the readings should be.. any advice would be great! Thanks!

For your coupler to have push fittings you'll be looking to install 5/8 female to 5/16 push-in. to use push-in on disconnects, just buy MFL variety push fittings and get 7/16-20 UNF FFL to 5/16 push-in. For line get 3.5 to 4 meters of 5mm ID beer line per tap.

@@GreyRockOne actually after re-reading my response, I realise I said just buy MFL variety push fittings. What I meant was by MFL variety 'disconnects' that will then work with the 7/16-20 UNF FFL to 5/16 push-in.
On my 3rd keg with new kegerator & got a petainer keg with IPA (a plastic disposable keg). Can’t get any flow from the keg. Gas is good, lines are clean. D coupler fits in place but no beer will flow. My only thought is that for some reason the coupler isn’t going low enough when engaged. Any ideas?

Yeah. First off, Pertainers are toublesome. The issues are probably not with your coupler, especially since you've already served other standard kegs without issue. Pertainers have a nasty habit of having the keg spears inside them slip off or break seal from where they attach to the lid, so no matter how much you try, you can't get beer to move out of them. Now, here's where this gets dangerous. Let's say you can't get the beer to move out, so you bump up the pressure. Still nothing, so you bump up a bit more. Pertainer doesn't have a built in Pressure Relief Valve, so if you take it too high, eventually it will burst.

How do I depressurize or remove the CO2 pressure from the barrel in the case of the D-type coupling?

Turn off your gas bottle and partially loosen the 5/8 nut on the gas inlet of the coupler without completely unattaching the nut. you should start to hear the gas escaping from the keg's headspace.
Is it necessary to put Teflon tape on the threads to the coupler, or are the gaskets enough?

There should be no need for thread tape. A good seal can be achieved when the connections are made tight against the silicone washers.

I just bought an A type connector for my Franziskaner barrel and it leaks air and wont let beer flow unless I press down on it. ever have this problem?

That's a new one. If you're leaking gas, that could only be from the seal for the coupler's gas inlet or from the seal from around the coupler's piston/probe when the handle is down and engaging the keg spear. If it stops when you press down, chances are it is the main gasket on the probe under the slide on part (skirt) that is compromised.
