    Never thought much of Dodge/Chrysler but I bought a used 2008 T&C and turned it into a minicamper and drove it through some of the worst conditions, a lot of semi-offroad (meant for 4×4s only) driving while exploring the edge of civilization and this thing has been a champ! We got her at 187k and have had to replace a few minor things but she's still running strong at 253k..now, on to these struts.

    Thanks for the great video! Very clear and concise. I especially loved the "but I'm doing the other side" part. I have noticed that a lot of how-to videos pick the easier side and leave it at that...then you're off other places in the middle of a tear down trying to figure out what to do next. Thanks again!

    I did this repair today. Thanks so much for the guidance! Different to the instructions in the video, I used a Torx bit in the middle of the stud for the anti-roll bar links to prevent it rotating and it worked a treat. Also one should expect a fair bit more difficulty in removing the aft upper strut bolts on the driver's side as the windshield wiper linkage is in the way. The sizes of all the bolts were 100% as described and the video gives a great overview of what is required. Thanks again @youwrench for taking the time and effort to film this.

    Nice video. Was part of my FYI research for replacing my struts to make sure there wasn't something funny with these. Replaced both front struts and sway bar links today and both rear shocks with zero issues. I was happy that my replacement struts were like OEM with set holes not lower slots like ones in the video so it does not have a camber alignment that's needed. Since I didn't touch the tierods, no wheel alightment required. Took it for a test drive and it drove straight as an arrow!

    When tightening the strut mount bolts (x3 bolts), should this be done once the wheels are loaded and touching the ground ( k=0)? Or perhaps they should be tightened first, and then torqued once wheels are touching the ground? Thank you

    Just a word to the wise, don't go cheap on the strut assemblies, it's a job you don't want to do again for a long, long time. By a good name brand like KYB, or Monroe Senatrac etc. You'll be very glad you did.

    Hi, can you explain the purpose of torquing the lower strut mount bolts, and then adding a 90 degree turn?

  • @YouWrench

    @YouWrench

    2 жыл бұрын

    This is fairly common these days with various bolts all over your car. It is a way of ensuring proper 'stretch' in the bolt, and tends to be a little more 'accurate' than just doing it by torque value, hence the manufacturers often prefer to do it that way. This spec is direct from the Dodge workshop manual. Hi, this is an excellent detailed video.. great job! I purchased the same struts for my Grand Caravan and after installing my front sits significantly higher....like 2 inches higher than rear. So I replaced the old rear shocks with Monroe OEspectrum hoping it would help balance it out a bit but the front still sits way too high. Its also very noticeable when stepping into the vehicle. Did you have this problem with your van also?

  • @YouWrench

    @YouWrench

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! They will generally sit a little high upon install, but they *should* level off fairly quickly (i.e. a few days of driving). It could be a slight combination of your old ones sitting a little lower than they should (due to age/wear, or especially if you had a snapped spring!), and the new ones sitting a little high so the visual difference is 'doubled' (if that makes sense). On this car, they were notably sitting a little high on install (but I wouldn't say two inches!!!) but looking at the car recently the suspension now looks nice and even all around so they definitely have levelled off. Springs will settle, and so it's common to sit a little high immediately upon install to allow them to bed in. If they were at the 'bedded in' height immediately then chances are they would sag to be too low relatively quickly as the spring settles. The non factory replacements are probably just a little bit longer than the original and also longer than exact replacements. I saw another video on this (Scotty Kilmer) where he measured them side by side and found the difference. Not a problem really unless you just don't want the extra height. The main thing I would focus on is the replacement is sure a whole lot better than the original if the original was worn out. Exact replacements are also like over $700.00 each for some cars!!

    Possibly, but it's really not required. There's plenty of space on both sides to get your hand and wrench in there. Access is actually pretty nice on the Grand Caravan for the top of the strut. --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! Can you explain a bit why you gave the lower mounting bolts an additional 90 degrees of turn AFTER getting to the specified torque setting? Wouldn't that significantly over-torque the bolts?

  • @YouWrench

    @YouWrench

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey there! Yes, actually this is very common, for all makes and models of cars. This torque spec is taken directly from the Dodge workshop manual. It's to do with bolt stretch, and also torque wrenches tend to be more accurate in the lower to mid ranges, and can be damaged if you over torque them. So the idea if to torque to the spec, and ideally the remaining 90 degree's would be done on a breaker bar (if likely to be outside of the maximum range of the torque wrench). Hope that makes some sense!! :-) --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! Some other how to videos showed removing the wheel axle nut. Is there a reason you didn't remove?

  • @kirkdarling4120

    @kirkdarling4120

    13 күн бұрын

    The instant the wheel is free of the bottom strut bolts, it will want to fall outward under its own weight. If it's allowed to fall freely, it will pull the drive axle out of its spline...then you've got a real problem on your hands...that's going to be a tow to a shop. Removing the axel nut will allow the wheel to fall off freely without pulling the axle with it. However, what did (just this afternoon) was to put my jack under the brake disk (put a rag under the disk to cushion it) and use the jack to lift its weight up so it wouldn't fall.

    TBH, not really. They tend to be the cheaper and more generic solutions that are available. But wait whats up with the bottom bolt the hole is oval! So you gotta do an alignment on cambers?!

  • @YouWrench

    @YouWrench

    4 ай бұрын

    No, you should find that there is no flexibility during the install as the main bolt locks the angle in one direction, and then the second bolt passes through the slot and cannot move up and down the slot, and the movement in the other direction is locked by the width of the hole. However, the oval does ALLOW for camber adjustment, but you will need special bolts (camber adjustment bolts) if you want to change the camber position. Without the special bolts the position will be locked (not adjustable, or certainly not as easy to adjust). All that said, you should expect to have to do at least a wheel alignment after changing major suspension components (as outlined in the video). Yes, I agree on materials. Some of the materials (but not all!) used on these are terrible. Hose spring clamps immediately come to mind, we've had lots of those cause coolant leaks by losing their ability to clamp. You open up the spring clamp and it just snaps in half. Complete garbage. BUT you need to remember that these cars were pretty (comparitively) cheap to buy brand new, and you do sometimes get what you pay for. But those clamps really annoy me, costing people hundreds of dollars in repairs to save what, 5c a clamp? Just add $5 to the price of the car and put decent clamps on it!! --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome!
