I have something to say to Taryl here about the flywheels on any lawn equip motors. Depending on where U live at especially folks closer to the shore lines the air itself can hold a host of more corrosive elements as well as the household tap water U folks rinse your machines off with. So sometimes people like me by Exp living here in the Pocono mountains where we get that high humidity I tend to find some flywheels and bottom pulleys need some tactics as well as a puller to remove em... So keep that in mind Taryl Dactyl. When folks live where salt water is in the air it does affect parts of the machines. Just like Pennsylvania and all shit they spray on the roads here in the winters there are 40 year old cars in the USA that don't have as much rust as brand new one that's gone thru a winter here. The reasons I make part of my living now doing rust panels on mainly pickup trucks.

Thanks for a very helpful and informative video. I followed your instructions and fix went perfectly. Oi leak had been driving me crazy. A shop near me in Ill wanted $400 to $500 to repair. But, thanks to you it just cost me for parts. The crack in the housing seems to be nothing more than an engineering screw up. I've seen at least 4 Cub Cadets, including mine, with a hairline crack in the exact same location. This must be from the torque exerted on the crank shaft when PTO is engaged. In the future I intend to cut the idle down to idle before engaging the PTO. This seems to worke as the heavy stress on the cam is almost eliminated. Here's hoping it lasts. Thanks again. You really know your stuff.

I enjoy watching Taryl. I stumbled onto this video and a few others when searching for videos on how to repair a problem I was having. I was working on a Kohler Courage 20HP SV600 engine. After watching this video and few that pertained to my engine I was able to get my riding mower back up and running! Very helpful and informative videos with comedy! I do agree it does take courage to work on a Kohler courage engine! Thanks Taryl and keep the videos and comedy coming!

Was having issues with my Kohler SV600 cranking, adjusted the valves and nothing, made sure the valve seats were good and nothing. Read about the compression release crap (did not look fun), but I used this video to learn how to tear the top of the engine apart and sure enough the spring on the compression release was broke. I know this is a guide for replacing the gasket but the little extra tid bits of info on the cam gears and everything helped me fix mine, ended up replacing the whole gear and lever to the "updated" one since I was in there. Runs like a top now, for about 60$ and a couple hours of work. Thanks Taryl, your videos are super informative and entertaining.

I know this comments a couple years old now but do you remember what gear you ordered for the compression release? I'm having the same exact issue with mine and it seems like a loose spring is the culprit.

I love your videos. You obviously have a lot of experience with small engines and know how tight the various bolts should be. But for most of us newbies following the torque specs can ensure that we do not under tighten or over tighten the fasteners. I just worked on a Kawasaki engine and it wanted the 10mm valve cover bolts torqued to 5.9Nm (4.3 ft lb). Had I just tightened them by hand it would have been very easy to over tighten them.

Block was also cracked in two places, alignment pins just wobbling around in their elongated holes. Valve cover was leaking as well as the head gasket. It's also burning oil as the rings are shot. I can move the piston side to side in the cylinder with ease, just as you had shown in one of your recent videos, Taryl. Thank you for all of your informative and at times crazy videos. Just performed this fix on my Kohler Courage 21 in my Toro Zero Turn Mower last night. This video took the worry out of me screwing up the fix. Your videos are funny and very educational - I wouldn't have tried this if I hadn't seen your video. You saved me hundreds of dollars by doing it myself! Thanks! Just one step took a while for me to solve -Taking out the Bolt from the Flywheel. My flywheel kept on turning while I was trying to remove the bolt. I had to fabricate a large wrench out of two rubber oil filter wrenches that I put around the rim of the flywheel so that I could hold it still while I removed the bolt. How did you make it look so easy to remove the bolt without securing the flywheel?

Howd you go with timing? Is it possible to be 180° out? I've noticed there's 2 different piston stages to when you line up the dots on main gear and IN LEFT EX RIGHT.

  • @snapforth

    @snapforth

    2 жыл бұрын

@@readthebibleforyourself.7939 I don't think it's possible if you line up the marks. Either I got lucky and got it right the first try, or it's not possible. Looking at the head side of the engine, intake is on the right, exhaust is on the left. The cam gears are the same, the exhaust cam gear gets the compression release and the intake doesn't. Line up the IN mark on the intake cam gear with the dot on the crank, and the EX mark on the exhaust cam with the other dot on the crank. There are only two dots on the crank, so before removing cam gears rotate everything so it lines up and you should be fine. Right after he removes the crankcase side cover he shows this in the video.

@@snapforth yes very true mate, but there's a second stage also. I've basically cranked the piston all the way up to its top dead centre point and lined it all up. I'll find out Tomorrow if I blow the engine once all gaskets and welds are cured 😂

    2 жыл бұрын

@@snapforth the alignment can be made with piston up and piston down. Hard to explain.. A full revolution with the piston/ crank shaft has 2 stages in which you can line up those 2 dots with intake and exhaust. 1-piston all the way up in the chamber. 2-piston all the way down. I've set my timing with the piston all the way up.

A couple tips, I drilled a 1/8" hole in the heads of all the engine cover bolts like old military reciprocating aircraft engines and laced them all together with wire to prevent them from losing up. Locktite did not seem to work on the first attempt, probley not clean enough. This takes about an hour. Oh, a second tip that made me undo all my putting-together work, I completely removed the governor linkage, and that governor's arm you mentioned naturally flipped 180 degrees without me noticing it was in the wrong position and I put the engine cover back on. Make sure the governor's arm on the outside of the case is pointed up!

Great video ! Thank you. I'm helping an elderly neighbor with his Cub cadet that has a 19 HP Kohler Courage SV590-003 engine. He said it was bought very used and never ran great; but lately it sputtered and backfired every time he used it till it finally would not start. The carb was all corroded so I changed that and it still would not start. Weak spark so I checked coil and had to replace that as well. Still a no go. Then I checked timing key which I did not suspect because it's a rider so there is no direct connection to the blades which I thought would prevent timing key issues. Wrong. I replaced timing key which is very small by the way for a 19 hp engine; in fact about the size of some I have replaced on 5-7 hp engines. I replaced the key and the new one sheared off immediately and the engine tried to fire a bit and would crank over but just an occasional backfire. I am hoping I did not tighten flywheel enough like you mentioned in this video that could shear the key. Any ideas. A small engine mechanic friend told me he worked on a Kohler Courage that would sputter and backfire and found out that the cam had shifted considerably. This ever happen to you?

Please forgive me for this possibly silly question: at 5:49 when you use that hammer, do you recommend that it be a brass hammer or can any sledge hammer be used? Or possibly a dead blow hammer? I have this exact machine and exact issue. Thanks.

I wonder if you should put some rtv silicone on the sump cover gasket or just install dry?

Taryl- my cover is fighting me to go back on like yours was. Ive spun the shaft with channel locks, ive removed and tried again, ive tried tapping it with dead blow hammer lightly. I cant get the cover to finish seating the last 1/4"-5/16". Any ideas? (same engine, same exact service was done)

I have a kohler Command 15 Pro Series. The bottom gasket just started leaking a little. Do you have a video fix for the replacement of the gasket or should not worry about it?

Great Video as usual, You pointed out and mentioned the counter Balance, I have the same engine, vibrates and shakes. All the motor mount bolts are tight. Thinking the counter balance could be bad. Do you have a opinion or comment. I know it's hard to diagnose something over the phone or on this forum. Thanks again for a great video. George STL
