How to replace mower deck lift cable

How to replace mower deck lift cables. How to easily replace the cables that raise and lower the mowing deck. I searched and searched for length before buying them and it appears that they are all the same length.

    Thanks for the video. We have a Cub Cadet and its been a great mower as well, about the same age as yours. Our deck is doing the same thing, I got my husband in to watch your video. He said he would check it out before he mowed again, and to thank you for the video. Hope you and your wife are trying to stay cool, I just love the love you show for your babies. We have a couple that are spoiled as well. Thanks again Susie in TN

    It might be just a simple adjustment but even if its the cables it was an easy and cheap fix. I love this old cub. its been a great mower. I have 750 hours on it.

    Good video man! Some have a cable, some have a solid bar of steal. Usually found on the old school tractors. Some of the old sears, wheel horse, allis chalmers, etc. Update on the french toast made with almond milk, honestly, kinda yucky.

    Good to know about the almond milk. Yeah, I had a very old craftsman with a two speed transmission (4 gears with high and low) that had a metal bar and threaded rod that adjusted.

    I wonder if that nylon pulley might be causing it to throw the cable? Looks like it wobbles a little. Tractor Supply might have that bearing for the trimmer. Man I miss that store,they closed up in my town.

    I just got a free mower that has this same lift system for the deck. I been having a hard time figuring out a model number to get some parts. Mine is a troy bilt but any chance you know the year and model of yours?

    I just forked out 2500 dollars on a brand new cub cadet, only to find that I cannot raise the deck high enough to clear my lawn. Never had that trouble with my last two riding mowers. I'm pretty miffed about it. First time mowing and my blades wrecked my lawn. I'm pretty ticked off at the lousy customer service at my local Tractor Supply as well. I'm going to have to modify this mower somehow. Either install some adjustable scalp wheel brackets or perhaps shortening the cable you are showing might work.

    I know it sounds like something that couldn’t happen, but I bought a mower that cut like crap. After scratching my head, I looked under the deck and some dummy had installed the blades upside down. When you raise your deck using the handle, is there room left to raise the deck more? If so, you may be able to remove the cables , tie a knot in them, reinstall. That might give you the height you need. Also, tire inflation absolutely plays a role in how high the deck is off the ground. Make sure the tires are aired up.

    The problem I had is the head of the lift cable did not fit through the pulley wheel slot. I was considering some drastic solutions until I looked carefully at the ends of the cables where there is a 3/4" shaft that fits at 90 degrees. That shaft normally fits through the hole in the lifter and is held in place by a cotter pin through a hole in the end of that shaft (would be easier to describe with a picture). Any how, after looking at it carefully, I notice a small retaining ring holding the shaft in the head of the lift cable. Taking a chance, I took a deep socket of proper size, placed the cable head on it with the 3/5" shaft up right, then taped on the shaft driving it into the socket and pushing the retaining ring off. Then to see if I could replace the retaining ring, I used another deep socket just big enough for the shaft to fit into, placed the retaining ring on the socket, followed by the shaft. Then a few taps on the shaft and the ring was back in place. With the shaft removed, I can slip the head of the cable through the pulley slot. BUT, the next trick will be to reinstall the retaining ring while under the mower. Also note that removing the battery and shelf give great access to the upper end of the lift cable.

    Would be nice if you showed going through putting them on? On the lower pin which hole did you put it in? Also what do the numbers signify on on the raise & lower lever? Side question! I'm trying to adjust the deck height, but I'm thinking the numbers mean inches! It doesn't seem to be the case, so what do they mean?

  • @bctruck

    @bctruck

    Those numbers don’t mean inches anymore than the numbered selection on a box fan does. The numbers are simply an indication of height setting. As for showing the cable install. There’s no way I could have gotten my hands AND A CAMERA in there. Sheesh!

    I still believe that after fixint it (again) and uploading that video, you should contact them and tell them what kind of parts they put in it, and demand some retaliation for needing to fix a brand new product. in my opinion a product that has flaws and breaks less than 2 month after purchase, is not a good product!

    If your customers are anything like the people in town where I live, they wouldn't replace it, yet it somehow would be your fault, and they'd want it fixed for free, and want some other free handouts while they are there. People are such cheap asses...yet they'll spend several hundred dollars on a damn smart phone every few months, but damn it they refuse to spend $50 on a lawnmower part, they'll sure as hell buy a new lawnmower for sever hundred dollars though LOL.

    Well, I'll be damned... I wonder if that's what's wrong with my tractor's deck! Just this spring, for the first time (in 4 years), my tractor started cutting the grass at a slant... I tried to see if there was an adjustment, but nothing helped. I finally wedged a piece of wood between the deck and the running board on the "high side," which brought up the "low side" and gave me an even cut again -- but that was only a smoke-and-mirrors fix... Maybe I have cable troubles too! Thanks for the potential fix!

    How did you get the cable end off of the handle. There isn’t enough room to pull it out! You showed everything but that! The box frame does NOT allow for cable removal. Please advise or make a video showing the trick! For those wondering how to get the frame off, there are 2 bolts under the main trunk sticker. You have to cut around the sticker......
