How to repair the Agitator Dogs in your Kenmore or Whirlpool, or etc. Washer
Ғылым және технология
It is surprisingly easy to repair the agitator in your Kenmore, Whirlpool, KitchenAid (or many other brands) washing machine if it stops turning correctly. Here, with a bit of humor, as I'm ridiculous, is how to do it.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You seem to be the only other person who owns this exact washing machine model. I did not want to purchase a repair manual for my washing machine, so you have solved my enigma....how to remove my agitator once I am looking down the center with the fabric softener dispenser and cap with seal removed. I have to do a different repair that requires the agitator to be removed. My machine is nearing 16 years old and has only needed the the same "dogs" replaced in the past. Now I will be ready to that, too. What a gem of a machine and what a gem of a video for those of us who refuse to pay that highway robbery repair service fee to do a $5 or less repair. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Thanks for the video! My grandma was going to fix mine, but she discovered she didn't have the right square wrench. She thought I should call in a repair man. I came online to find a video that had the correct wrench so that I could buy one and do it myself, but your plier technique inspired me. I didn't have pliers but I had a pair of scissors, so I opened them up and was able to unscrew it that way. You saved me money, and it was a quick and painless job for an 8 months pregnant lady like myself :D

Thank you for suggesting scissors.!!! Worked perfect.
I watched part of your video and fixed in 5 minutes or less. That was only because you took the time to make this video. THANK YOU
Thanks a bunch. I spent $4.oo, saving myself a hundred bucks or so for a repair man. I did it myself. I am 52 and a lady. Really appreciate the video.

Thanks for the video. My boyfriend took my wash machine apart and couldn't get it back together. I watched this and I was able to get it together in like 3 minutes.

Your boyfriend probably did not have a dad to teach him anything or possibly his father was a preacher who only delved into the good book, but could not assess the source of diarrhea or a fart in a laxative factory. These guys are such losers today.

Nice job Amber! I hope he made you a nice dinner!
Removing the cap under the fabric softener dispenser took much more pulling for me than it did for you. Tried unsuccessfully with pliers, then looped some 3/8" rope through the top and pulled it up. After that it was easy and we thank you for giving us the courage to try.
I have a Kenmore 80 series. I appreciate your time and thanks to your video I have successfully replaced the agitator dogs in my washer. The dogs are universal. Less that $6 at the Sear's Parts counter.
I watched your video today and I was so happy to see that my problem can be fixed. More so now thanks to you, I priced the parts and $4.00 later I'm back in business. Agitator dogs replaced. You Sir are a genius, thank you for the service call you saved me........
Worked like a charm, cost me $12 for two sets of dogs from Amazon. Took me about 10 minutes to repair. Thanks, you saved me hundreds !!
Props to you and to Kenmore for making an enduring product. I own a 20+ year old Kenmore 80 Series washer and so far have replaced a corroded hot water valve, ripped out the plastic tub rim after it disintegrated a while back and fixed it with zip ties, and secured the rusty outer case to the inside one with some nails through the screw holes; it's still going! Thank you for these tips, now the dogs are dogging. Only hitch was that I couldn't use the plier trick, I had to use a socket wrench with an extension to undo a hex nut holding the agitator assembly. I confess that I was one of the Sears Wishbook browsers, also. :-}
My dad used to do this. We still have our old machine from the 60s. I watched him fix everything. Learned a lot from him.
I am age 69 female, and I followed your video instructions easly. It took just a few minutes to install the dogs on my Kenmore washer, besides the time that I cleaned it up a bit. I so appreciate you sharing this with us. Keep up the good works, as you help many people. Thanks, Bonnie
Just another quick tip. I found if I used a 6" long 1/2" ratchet extension (minus any kind of socket on it of course) on my ratchet, it fit perfectly into that center nut to remove the top part of the agitator.

Thank you for including the length of the extension. N=I could find the length I needed nowhere before you said this. :)
I just called two different repair services and one wanted $60 and the other one $70 just to come out and LOOK at it!!! OMG am I glad that I decided to get on here and come across your video! I will have my washer fixed today for about $3! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I just totally repaired my washer for less than $3 from the video. I found the agitator dogs on ebay. Thanks a lot for posting this. It just saved me a lot of money. :)
You ROCK! Yours was the only video that explained why there was NOT a bolt under the agitator cap!!!! THANK YOU! I used a pair of lineman's pliers to loosen the 'nut' and they worked perfectly, Thank You again!!
Can't believe I waited 5 years to look up repair videos on KZread. I had the same problem as you guys, even though my clothes still came out clean. $4 dollar parts from Amazon and fixed it under 10mins. Unbelievable. Thank you very much. (Btw, I had a different model that allowed me to use a socket wrench, instead of the plier technique.)
It took me a minute to figure out how exactly to get the pliers to work, but after that it was a breeze! Thanks for this tutorial, saved me $$$

Loved your helpful video. Thank you so much! I have the exact same washing machine. I was struggling to get the agitator off, but now with your help it's a breeze. Well done!
This is my exact washer and this is the exact issue that just happened! Yeah I bought mine new in 2002!! Thanks man!!
I didn't quite save as much as the rest of you...I mean I paid $4.83 at the local appliance parts store for the parts ;-). My husband, 4 kids, and I thank you for helping to keep our washing machine out of commission for less than 1 day and saving us a trip to the laundry mat :-)
Thanks for putting up the video. Saved this Engineer a lot of time. Central fixing is stainless (?) bolt on my Whirlpool 5132E and is 7/16" A/F. Might add a note of care. Plastic cap with big "O" ring is to stop fabric conditioner and water going down into the main shaft and likely gearbox as well, so good to wipe the "O" ring clean as well as the agitator bore so it seats and seals correctly. Also good to check the ring of teeth for damage or wear. Just ordered set of new dogs on eBay. Machine will still run on low water level wash as lower agitator still works but I pulled the four broken and worn dogs out before reassembly whilst waiting for the new ones.

Yes. I've seen advise to lubricate the ring to get a seal with a drop of laundry detergent or a clear lubricant paste / gel used by plumbers / machinists.
My older model Kenmore had a steel 7/16" nut holding the agitator dogs housing in place. The bolt had a cone type washer on it, but I didn't replace it. Very simple fix. Helpful video!
Thanks for the help! First time I've had reason to go to Sears in fifteen years.
You saved me $175, and I was hellah broke too. Thank you so very much. I was able to get the parts from Genuine Replacement Parts GRP. YOU ROCK!
Finally a video where the washer has the plastic spring cap thing, I couldn’t figure out how to get it out !!

Great video. Got whirlpool oem on eBay for $3.49 w/free shipping. Did job in 10 minutes and saved $150. service call. Laundry is once again super washed and clean!

@1:18 This is how you can tell that your agitator dogs are bad. Perfect! Just what I was looking for. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks for the video. It helped me fix our washer and my wife is shocked at my fixit skills!
thank you for this video saved me from hauling my washer to the repair center, fixed it in 30 minutes after getting the parts.
Thanks for the great video, the square plastic nut is half inch so a 1/2 ratchet with extension fits perfect.

The best video for fixing a washer yet.
Thank you so much for your video it helped me out immensely. I watched other videos on this but they had bolts on their washers to remove parts , I couldn't figure this out till I came across your video. Plus you have the exact washer i have. Thanks again with sincere gratitude that you took the time to post this!

Thank you! I did this repair myself...took about a total of 10-15 minutes and cost me $7 because I needed to fix it the next day and not wait to order parts.
You are a natural for video instructing! Thanks for your help, although I have no idea what you were talking about on that catalog thing
Very helpful video! Humor never gets old, it is good for the soul! Plus it makes our mundane lives easier, thank you! Couldn't find the dogs for 3.75 at Amazon, someone must've left them out!
Great video! My Elite Pro required a 7/16" ratchet to remove the agitator. That was the only thing different about my model. $8 later I am back in business. Sears had a minimum charge of $80 just to look at the washer. Thank you.

You mean a 7/16"socket I think :)
Thank you!!!! ( and ditto on the 1/2 extension for the "square drive".. MUCH easier than the pliers! )
Thanks! I figured my washer was 'disposable' but you easily taught me otherwise. New dogs are on their way via amazon.
Dude! You da man! Thanks a lot. I don’t know how long my agitator was out of service!!! Got the dogs off Amazon Prime. I’m in business now. L8tr!
I thoroughly enjoyed your video your innuendos and jokes gave me a laugh great video thank you
I learned something and was entertained! I've ordered my "dogs" and well put my knowledge to the test soon.
thank you ..i didnt know how to do this until now .....thank you so much ..now my washer works.

Fun to watch and so helpful, thanks! :)
This video was immensely helpful! You saved me over $200 and 4 hours of waiting around for a repair man. It took me 20min and $4. Thank you for such a funny, informational video. I enjoyed watching and learning the process. It really is so simple. FYI - You can buy the parts from a Sears Repair Service Center. Mine cost $4.

thanks for the how-to video, works great now!
Thank God I stumbled on this video in 2020.. You just saved me from a $75 house call or $600 new washer!
Great Video, I like your subtle humor and more. My Kenmore series 90 is so close to yours.. My daughter loves to overload the capacity no matter what. fixing mine today. Thanks for a good video! 🙂
Very helpful. I think I can do this... Thank you!
Thanks so much. For some reason all 4 fell out but I found 2 of them in the tub. Who knows where the others went. I am running on 2 now but I know how to put them in when I order another batch at least. If only I could get a high efficiency washer right now since this one uses 80 gallons of water per wash.
thanks, I saw a few other videos that showed a 7/16 bolt down there, mine looks like this. Figured it turned but was nice to know before hand.
exactly my problem. thank you for the fix!
Great video .... now I know what's going on with my washer... thanks
hahahahaha YOU ARE SO FUNNY :) I LOVED THIS VIDEO. MY HUSBAND AND I LOVED IT AND WE LEARNED SO MUCH. I TOTALLY APPRECIATE YOUR AMAZING HELP . YOU ARE THE BEST. WE FIXED OUR WASHER AND NOW THANKS TO YOU , IT WORKS !!! :) THANK YOUUUUU

Thank you sir. The agitator in my washer doesn't spin CCW easily, but it will spin that way. Looks like yours is the solution. Thanks in advance for the education.
I used a half in drive ratchet with extension thats square not rounded. Worked great.
You're videos are awesome..please keep posting any handyman vids or tips because they definitely help this independent gurl, and many other people I'm sure :) thanks again!

Hilarious Video and Helpful I already know how to do this repair I clicked on it to find out why he was using pliers??? 😂😂😂 I see he getting the job done Ghetto style I love it 😂😂😂 BTW your coupler going out on the motor
@NakedEyeStudios

Who is KanD? You have a good ear! The coupler actually did go out, but not until 7 years after this video was made. I replaced it myself in 2017, but didn’t make a video as sticking your head under the washer is just not that sexy...😂
Thanks so much for this video.
great video. informative and funny
I'M GOING FOR IT. THANK YOU KIND SIR. !!!!!

DO INDEED GO FOR IT!! 😂
Worked for me thanks.
I had to have the 1/2" extension for my ratchet too. The hole in the top of the agitator was too deep for getting off the nut the way this video shows. I ordered the whole repair kit. I wish I would have known about just the dogs before I ordered the whole kit! Grrr!
@matteighm

Truth Seeker - YOU used the right tool. It looked like the instructor inserted needle-nosed pliers, opened them so that they would catch the opposite corners of the square hole and turned CCW to loosen.
Awesome! Well done. Wish someone did a Simpson Espirit 650? Can't find a single video on it?
thanks goodman saved me alot of headache
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you! Every other video said to use a 7/16” socket to remove the bolt, I was like, there is no bolt! I guess it’s tough being accustomed to only the elite... By the way, my top lid seal is broken in the exact same way.
Thank you!
Great video.Thanks..........................
I have the same model, but the plastic nut was replaced with a 7/16 head bolt -- or maybe it was the other way around.Good video.

thanks ! needed to know how to get the retainer piece off (you used pliers) ...
hey, the other day i fixed my coupler, but before i knew it was a coupler problem i pulled a bit to hard on my agitator. it does not turn counter clockwise now, but it does seem to be wobbly and loose. Did i break something? or make something loose? It seems to work. I am just worried that i broke it some how.
Hello, Thanks for the video. Are you using long nose pliers?
@NakedEyeStudios
8 жыл бұрын
+Kimberly Trinette Yes, any sort of skinny nose pliers that will fit in the space.
There are tiny St. Bernard dogs down there doing all the work.
Thanks for the video handsome man! I will fix my Kenmore washer after work today. You funny and HOT!
