How to repair the Agitator Dogs in your Kenmore or Whirlpool, or etc. Washer

Ғылым және технология

It is surprisingly easy to repair the agitator in your Kenmore, Whirlpool, KitchenAid (or many other brands) washing machine if it stops turning correctly. Here, with a bit of humor, as I'm ridiculous, is how to do it.

    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You seem to be the only other person who owns this exact washing machine model. I did not want to purchase a repair manual for my washing machine, so you have solved my enigma....how to remove my agitator once I am looking down the center with the fabric softener dispenser and cap with seal removed. I have to do a different repair that requires the agitator to be removed. My machine is nearing 16 years old and has only needed the the same "dogs" replaced in the past. Now I will be ready to that, too. What a gem of a machine and what a gem of a video for those of us who refuse to pay that highway robbery repair service fee to do a $5 or less repair. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

    Thanks for the video! My grandma was going to fix mine, but she discovered she didn't have the right square wrench. She thought I should call in a repair man. I came online to find a video that had the correct wrench so that I could buy one and do it myself, but your plier technique inspired me. I didn't have pliers but I had a pair of scissors, so I opened them up and was able to unscrew it that way. You saved me money, and it was a quick and painless job for an 8 months pregnant lady like myself :D

    Your boyfriend probably did not have a dad to teach him anything or possibly his father was a preacher who only delved into the good book, but could not assess the source of diarrhea or a fart in a laxative factory. These guys are such losers today.

    Removing the cap under the fabric softener dispenser took much more pulling for me than it did for you. Tried unsuccessfully with pliers, then looped some 3/8" rope through the top and pulled it up. After that it was easy and we thank you for giving us the courage to try.

    Props to you and to Kenmore for making an enduring product. I own a 20+ year old Kenmore 80 Series washer and so far have replaced a corroded hot water valve, ripped out the plastic tub rim after it disintegrated a while back and fixed it with zip ties, and secured the rusty outer case to the inside one with some nails through the screw holes; it's still going! Thank you for these tips, now the dogs are dogging. Only hitch was that I couldn't use the plier trick, I had to use a socket wrench with an extension to undo a hex nut holding the agitator assembly. I confess that I was one of the Sears Wishbook browsers, also. :-}

    Just another quick tip. I found if I used a 6" long 1/2" ratchet extension (minus any kind of socket on it of course) on my ratchet, it fit perfectly into that center nut to remove the top part of the agitator.

    Thanks for putting up the video. Saved this Engineer a lot of time. Central fixing is stainless (?) bolt on my Whirlpool 5132E and is 7/16" A/F. Might add a note of care. Plastic cap with big "O" ring is to stop fabric conditioner and water going down into the main shaft and likely gearbox as well, so good to wipe the "O" ring clean as well as the agitator bore so it seats and seals correctly. Also good to check the ring of teeth for damage or wear. Just ordered set of new dogs on eBay. Machine will still run on low water level wash as lower agitator still works but I pulled the four broken and worn dogs out before reassembly whilst waiting for the new ones.

    hey, the other day i fixed my coupler, but before i knew it was a coupler problem i pulled a bit to hard on my agitator. it does not turn counter clockwise now, but it does seem to be wobbly and loose. Did i break something? or make something loose? It seems to work. I am just worried that i broke it some how.

    Hello, Thanks for the video. Are you using long nose pliers?

    +Kimberly Trinette Yes, any sort of skinny nose pliers that will fit in the space.
