How to remove freezer drawers on Kitchen Aid refrigerator

Simple if you know how. I had to learn the hard way. This is for model :KRFF507ESS01

These products suck big time. Mine was 2.5 years old and had MULTIPLE service calls in just a short period of time. You're so kind to call it a piece of junk. Very nice and clear and helpful video...Unfortunately, I have to also take the back panel off as the freezer gets inches of ice in it constantly. I wrote to Marc Bitzer, CEO at Whirlpool, and had the option to buy out my service contract. Unfortunately, all the fridges are junk unless you go to over-the-top-of-the-line which all counter depth and too tall. Never got any response from him, just from my service contract agency. PIECE OF JUNK is way too nice, but you provided a great demonstration. Thank you.

Just wanted to say I appreciate your video. I had a 1/2 gallon of ice cream melt out of the carton and I just want to take out the top freezer drawer to clean it well… I laughed a few times during your video because I can tell you share my frustration with this “great, fancy fridge”. Thanks for your help

Thank you. Something got stuck behind/under the drawer and prevented a proper seal. This saved me a service call.

Thanks for the video, it helped. I thought I should let everyone know you can remove the top freezer drawer without removing the freezer door panel. Also, the two "L" shaped clips that retain the top drawer can be removed by depressing the small square plastic button on the inside of the fixed metal track -- there's a square hole in the metal track -- it's what holds the "L" clips in place. I used a flat blade screwdriver, but the plastic is fairly soft and will get chewed up if you do this enough times, so I recommend finding a plastic tool or something rounded to depress the plastic button. PS. I've also had this fridge serviced a few times, but it's held up fairly well. I bought it in July 2013. It developed a freon leak and a water leak, both of which my clever repairman fixed with a little out-o-the-box thinking.

Like everyone else, I tried in vain to get those Stop Pan plastic pieces off so I could remove the drawers. You have no idea what a relief it was to find this video with the solution. Now if repairs needed to be made, like replacing the Evaporator Motor in the freezer compartment, I'll be able to get inside to do repairs. You did Good T.S. Young!!

Loved the video. Needed to replace the freezer light to get the refrigerator lights to work again. But one thing. When putting the top drawer back in, it needs to be be facing the right way. It does not go in backwards. Had to watch your video a few times to realize that error on our part. Once figured out that drawer went in nicely. Thank you again.

Thanks for the video. I have a diff make and model but what I was after was really clear info on how to pop those clips out and back in. My goal was to get the damn drawers out so I could take a look at the ice machine. I would never have thought I'd need to have to take the door off to do all that but as you say "presto". I'm not terribly handy but you saved me a $200 service call and I was able to fix it myself once I was down on the floor with my head in the freezer. Oh, and I cleaned the drawers while I had them out. :)

We have a Whirlpool and it's the same set up to a tee. I am having problems with the LED lights. Started with the one in the freezer which you can't get at unless you remove that drawer. Now I know how and it will make replacing the light much easier. Side note, that freezer light went out first, now the fridge upper lights are out. The side lights still work as they are on a different circuit. I'm going to use one of the side lights to narrow down which of the lights is bad or if it's the switch. Those replacement lights are $65 each. Such a rip off, the fridge has 10 lights, meaning $650 just in lights! Joke! Great video, thanks again.

First off -- BRAVO! Thanks for posting this. Second -- @Kitchen (NO)Aid, what the hell were your engineers thinking in designing a freezer that has to have the door taken off to remove and clean the damn freezer baskets? Another fine example of someone who DOES NOT USE A PRODUCT trying to design a product. TOTAL GACK. Bad very bad engineer, no cookie no coffee! Third -- this trick of removing those plastic stops works on the KRMF706ESS00 model. It will allow you to remove the lower basket and middle drawer. (Still working on figuring out how to remove the top drawer. Luckily that was not the problem for me today...) Fourth -- @tsyoung240... You Da Man, Thank you Thank you Thank you!!

So thanks for saving our lives and money.

I had the same frustration with my Whirlpool which is exactly the same configuration as your KitchenAid. In fact, all of the Whirlpool videos showed a freezer configuration almost nothing like mine. Your video was helpful and confirmed for me how the drawers come out. Like you said, I thought I was breaking those drawer slide stops, but you showed that I was just not going far enough. One small modification to your instructions that will make re-assembly a bit easier is to just loosen the two top screws that hold the drawer door on. This way the screws remain in place, and they just need to be slid back over the metal brackets and tightened up.

You are the best! Thanks! We were being so timid with those plastic brackets. We did as you said and it worked. I looked everywhere, like the others to figure out those brackets or stops. Our problem was the noise from the evaporator fan. We thought we needed to order a motor and or fan part but wanted to get into it first to see for ourselves. It turns out that it was just ice build up all around the fan and behind that back panel. Once we cleared it all out the fan and motor worked perfect. So glad we didn't order the parts first. Hope this helps someone else. Also, liked the tip using the garden hose on cleaning the drawers. Thanks again!

I couldn't get to it to check it without taking out the drawers. This video showed me how. Thanks again! Edit: one thing I noted when you're putting in the bottom drawer, you need to make sure that the very back of the "drawer rail" is far enough back over the "sliding rail" so that the little notches will actually fall all the way into place.

Everyone make sure the condensor unit underneath stays clean. We literally had an entire cats worth of fur under ours. The factory screen is a joke so I hot glued window screen over it and used weatherstrip around the edges to prevent it from happening again. Lack of airflow underneath will cause poor performance and icing over of the evaporators in the freezer.

If you are now having the same problem I had with this piece of crap appliance, here is a recommendation. My POS fridge keeps shutting down from a computer glitch. The "Deli drawer board" sends a bad code to the "Main Board" and it causes it to malfunction. What you will hear first is the fridge cycling and shutting down with a rattle about every 3-5 seconds. When in this state IT IS NOT COOLING the interior. I have had a service tech out twice before for this same problem. Last time they replaced the "Deli board." This last time, making it a total 3x in two years, I asked the technician what happens if you just deactivate the Deli board? Answer, your drawers will be the same temperature as the rest of the fridge. Good, I'll take that over the constantly reoccurring malfunction. He disconnected it and so far so good. If you are reading this and are considering buying a Kitchen aid appliance, DON'T! I bought an entire kitchen of these appliances two years ago and have now had to have a total of five services calls to keep them running. DON'T...

Thanks for the posting, big help getting those out, though ours is a three drawer model. Had the deli syndrome, the controller would go brain dead literally every thirty days and shut down totally. Come in to hear an actuator clicking noise from fridge. Took a 10 min hard reboot to get it started to run for another 30 days. Had the front & back panel control boards replaced, all has been good for about 2 months. The techs never discussed the deli panel as the issue, keep that one in the memory banks. Now lately the fridge section just seemed a bit warm and would take a long time to cool down. Took the deli drawer out only to find a wall of ice back on the evaporator panel. Took out those drawers and assembly; seen how to do that when the evaporator coil had a manufacturing defected, leaked the Freon and had to be replaced. Defrosted the fridge evaporator down and decided to inspect the freezer section. Was able to get all three out & took apart the freezer evaporator panel to check for ice build up. KA - never again (though good luck with that since whirlpool owns many of these companies). Our KA range is almost an equal par with the fridge.

I have the exact same model. The freezer drawer is out of alignment so I am not getting a good seal along the right side. The result....a lot of ice build up in the freezer! Any idea on how to align it??? I'm not happy with KitchenAid at this point! Thanks!
