    Thank you. I forgot to drain mine last summer, and I've been using it this summer and it has a musty smell. I did drain it tonight and I noticed a few chunks of stuff coming out in the water. I have an LG, hopefully I can get the case off like what you did and clean those areas

    Most of em will evaporate water themselves. Leave drains open and it run it in fan mode every once in awhile. You should do that 24 hrs prior to storage. This will dry the tanks and trays out preventing any growth.

    When you drain in end of summer. Leave all the drains open and run it in fan only mode for 24 hrs before you store it. It'll help save some you trouble next year. Many people don't do it. These things need to be completely dry prior to storage. I'd probably throw a sheet of plastic over it as well.

    I have an insignia which is a bestbuy brand and it looks identical. I went to home depot and bought a female to female garden hose adapter for the top called a swivel 3/4 and then for the bottom a garden hose swivel 3:4 to 1/2 then got a hex bushing 1/2 to 3/8 to attach to the bottom and shot water through it and let it sit overnight with the stoppers and caps off overnight. His way is probably better but this might be a little easier. I will take it apart next time it smells The part numbers are LFA-662, LFA-660, and LFA-828

    That is awful to hear! I was thinking about getting a portable unit to see if it would help with my of mold that seems to come from my window unit. I'm in Florida and for the last few years replaced my window unit in my office because of mold build up. The first time I would turn the unit off and on, thought maybe mold was forming from that (it wasn't). Tried cleaning with bleach, no luck. The second unit I ran 24/7 while letting the humidifier option kick in, no luck still mold. The current unit about to be replaced I've done everything, would rinse out the back every few weeks, would drop in cleaning tablets, and still, mold inside. I wonder if its something the neighbors are spraying on their plants getting into the vent system, but when you said yours has mold regardless, now I'm thinking I may be out of luck.

  • @h3aveNsHaZe

    @h3aveNsHaZe

    @@zoomzoomkaboom The issue with mold is condensation. If there's a large amount of residual water form the water formed doing compression, it'll always form mold, especially in dark, humid, and hot places. What you need is a mold spray, and bleach. Spray it down, wash it, and let it sit in the sun. This should resolve it for a few months doing the hotter times of the year. But if you have a unit that's on 24/7, make sure to do it regularly.

    Use water and dawn soap on plastic housing. Or drip trays. Use AC Coil Fin Cleaner on the fins. DO NOT BEND THE FINS. Try to remove any visible dust then let air dry. Run it in fan only mode to dry it out really good before using. This should be done every season as well prior to storage. 24 hours if storing. Also if yours has a heat pump it doesn't hurt to run these things in reverse and use the heat. Helps kill bacteria. If you do it right you'll probably notice it cools better as well. I like to drain mine periodically even though it's self evaporating and run it in fan only mode to dry up the AC. This helps kill bacteria which is what causes smells. Most new units are pretty much maintenance free. Again they still need to be attended too in 2 weeks. Thats just the draw back of having the whole unit inside. Do a full clean once a year. It doesn't take long enough to suggest longer. NO BLEACH. You don't want to be breathing that and it'll likely corrode something.
