(DIY) How to clean a portable air conditioner with vent hose.

All portable air conditioners are magnets for dust, and mold. If you have one you really should think about cleaning it every year. The owners manual tells you to not open up the units. They want you to take a simple job to a ac shop. I'll show you how to open the front, and back. Exposing all the dust, and hair on the evaporator, and condenser. Don't put up with a musty smelling portable air conditioner that will stop working if not cleaned.

Oh Christian, I am SOOOOO thankful for this. I have the exact same unit and it ran for 8 years like a charm and the past week or so was first constantly filling with water and then just not working at all anymore. the thing is pricey, didn't want to have to replace it. I watched what you did, took apart the thing, scraped off about 1/4 inch thick worth of awful dust-mat like you had (but worse), vacuumed it all out, and now sitting here with it running and COOLING again! I can't tell you how many hours I've spent on this thing in the past few weeks, and with all my searching somehow never came across your video till now. So thank you, thank you, thank you!

If you’re breaking tabs to takeoff the covers, then that means the unit is not meant to be taken apart. I say that not to discourage you in the fact that you made your video but to reinforce the fact that these companies need to make cleaning these machines more accessible. Thank you for your time and effort sir.

I have the exact same unit and your video was very helpful. We live in South Florida so the unit has been running constantly for about 2 years. Recently I noticed it wasn't cooling as well and then it started filling with water and needed to be drained every hour or so. From looking online it seemed to suggest that it needed cleaning. It sure did the coils were filthy! I just wish I'd seen your video before I tried to take the cover off, would have saved me a lot of time! Your video and comments answered all the questions I had and it is working great now! Thanks for taking the time to make and post the video!

I have to clean mine every week with bleach/water mix in a spray bottle. I also drain water directly thru clear 5/8 collars. I get 5 gallons of water per day from the unit. I have the 6000 BTU LG from Hone Depot for 300 buks. I run it constantly 24/7 during the summer. At night when it is cool I run it in dehumidifier mode. I do it’s now after owning it for the first month and not putting the exhaust vent to the very outside pain window and had serious mold issues. The farther out you can exhaust away from the house the better. I am contemplating putting it out 12 inches from the house through a PVC Pipe. I think I wasn’t seeing the water the first month because it probably exhausts the moister, I have seen some that spray the water into the exhaust stream. I will make a video some day. Thanks for posting this video. I might have to take mine part some day.

I’ve got the updated model with air filters and they get filthy, the issue is the dirt in the coil fins too. You can’t see it and I’d love to know how to scrub the coils clean to maximize airflow and cooling from the unit after a few seasons use. Mine is 14k BTU and cools my 2 car garage very well in fall and spring but summer is hard on it and it doesn’t keep up. I’m gonna get a second unit to help but I would love to know how to wash the coil itself to remove sticky dirt and unseen filth.

Good video but further advice for you would be to purchase compressed air (canned) or if available to you an air compressor. You have only cleared the surface of the coil/s, the fins obviously run the length of the coil where dust/bacteria also collects. Cleaning off the surface and then cleaning the coil deeper would improve the units efficiency. You can also purchase a coil cleaner solution. Finally chuck in 1 part bleech and 4 parts water into the drain tray, allow to soak for a while then release the water as you would if you was draining off collected condense water.

Upon reading the manual of my newest one, it states not to use it when it the temperature drops below a certain degree or that could happen, so I'm wondering if it is the same even if it isn't running. As long as you vacume or blow out the evaporator, and condenser first. I work on heavy equipment in the mines. If we see an operator hosing out his radiator we get pretty upset. The reason is he's just making mud out of the dirt, and we have to replace the radiator cores. So clean well then spray on coil cleaner which is for oil, and grease. Thank you Christian

It's brand new so either it's full of water because it stores the water from the air it pulls in. Or the compressor just wasn't charged properly when built. Also if the back dust screen is full it will make the compressor act like it's colder then what it is. Try draining the water first.

The condenser will always make some water especially if your in a humid climate. Also these air conditioners also act as a dehumidifier so they are supposed to be drained every 2 months. There must be a crack in your pan which you could easily repair.

i couldn't find a video for my problem but i liked watching yours. I was wondering if you would be able to help me with my portable AC. I turn it on and it takes about 3-5 mins for the compressor to kick on but it only stays on for about 1 minute then the compressor shuts off but the fan still runs. Then after 7 minutes the compressor turns back on for only a minute again and then turns off. Do you know what the problem is?

Minh Vu Hi, it's low on refrigerant more then likely. The internal thermostat could be bad also. I would ohm the thermostat to see if it's still good first. Those portable units are just like ones on rv's. You can't charge them because they don't have ports on the high, and low side. Thank you Christian

The moisture in the air is condensing on to the evaporator coil. The condensate is then dripping down into the drip pan. This is perfectly normal. If you live in high humidity area's you may need to drain the water once a day.

I have a Delonghi portable AC, it is about 5 years old, I have a severe water problem, it fills up with humid water then over flows on to the floor, all I can find is a drainage spout at the bottom, that has no cover , I put a small bowl under it to flow in & yet I find no water in it, I used a coat hanger in the small bottom vent, felt, got nothing, wire went to the end no problem & nothing came out with it, I took the back off like everyone else on here & found nothing other then water marks where the water over flowed, I have a great working ac that over flows & I can't find any way to stop it, I have no drawer at the Botton, only the drain spout & it doesn't appear to be wet looks like it has never been wet, this is the vent I used a coat hanger with out result, the only solution I can think of now is to put it in one of those big storage tubs & hope it doesn't drown over night,

And since we have a universal system at the apartment I live in, that means it's vented to the hall's also and if a unit is empty it put's strain on others plus you get dust and smoke from them also. It's not legal but when building was built no zoning or code's! It's as hot as hell on 3rd floor, called Landlord& he wont do shit. It was 88 in here with 14,600 BTU I had a attic apt. in Chicago 3bd. I had a 8,000BTU and a 5,00 and it was ice cold! that's because it's not sucking crap in the back.I'm sure it's dirty I got 3 cats I put chesse cloth on back to keep it clean after I took a flash light and a really long brush as best as I could see. But after 88 and I was soaked I'm running the stale central air. I'll clean it when cool and sell it worst thing I ever did
