This type of thinking...this more intelligent, gentle way of re-phrasing an important question about where your horse's attention is... I hope this is the way of the future for people that love horses. ❤❤❤

I learn so many interesting tidbits from you, Warwick. I will never ride, I watch in memory of my dad, master saddler and horse whisperer. He would enjoy hearing your tips and tricks. He lived to 99, enjoying his animals and working to the very end.

Me watching this wondering where Warwick was going to pull a 20hh horse from. But learning Warwick’s height is something I’ve always been curious about

Try doing Shires when you are a 3 1/2 foot child. I had to climb the corral fence to get it done.

when i open the stable door to my 16.1hh TB mare with her head coller in my hand, she lowers her head (ears forward) with her top lip littrally inches from the ground then lifts her head once head coller is fastend, not sure if thats good or bad? xx

Yep, me too, and also with Thoroughbreds. They literally scoop their nose into the halter. Even when they're out on pasture having a great time when they see me at the gate they amble on over,, happy to be "chosen" for a ride. OTTBs. Best ever.

How can you put a halter on atall, horse?! Very existential question🤔

I have been trying to do this but my rope halter nose section is not 'open' to slip on, it soft and more closed...sorry, don't know how to describe this 🤣. So I'm thinking maybe different rope used? I bought my one in uk. This sounds like a minor point but i just can't slip the nose on with using my hands. Would love to do it like warrick suggests....BTW...My horse is 16.1 and I'm 5'3. Equipment rather than height the issue i think 🤔 .

Can you braid more rope across the nose section to make it a bit stiffer?

Ive just realised that you can buy rope halters in varying stiffness....not sure which one is best

I use a soft rope halter with the exact same process. It's no different.

I don’t know if the stiffness of the halter cord makes a difference to the horse, but most commercial halter cord is pretty stiff. I DON’T think the ones with knots in the nose band to add pressure to the horses face work well tho

Because the horse is a high headed giant slightly feral stinker of a draft horse that needs training really badly? Oh and he LOVES playing with humans, will come right over, just not interested in playing it our way, LOL! If he lifts his head high, I can't even touch his chin, I'm short and he's tall, no way to put halter on unless he meets me half way. Luckily he's not overtly aggressive but he's very passive aggressive. He's a rescue that was well trained once but forgot a lot of it, so I've been putting a rope on his neck and am working on teaching him to lower his head first. And am working on teaching him to stop biting said rope. He loves biting the damned rope LOL!

You have to ask yourself "why" does lift his head high around you

  • @OnceUponaTimeline

He lifts his head high around everyone and even when he's by himself, he's a proud rooster headed boy, the tallest beast around too. He does lower his head for eating of course, that's about it. He also has wobblers syndrome sadly so I can't run him or back him up. He thinks he's the boss obviously but it's not easy to change his mind. The rescue workers at the facility are pretty soft hearted so I am pretty limited in methods I can use, not sure if they will even allow me to flail a flag at him too much but he'd probably ignore it even if I did. @@WarwickSchiller

@@OnceUponaTimeline Thinking that this would be a good idea "He also has wobblers syndrome sadly so I can't run him or back him up.", is one of the reasons he is tense and high headed around you. Changing your perception from "he thinks he's the boss' to "he's worried and defensive" will go a long way to solving many issues.

All of Warwick’s videos on creating connection are pure gold!!! Matching steps with my own hard-to-catch pasture horses, for example, helped me start a dialogue ‘at liberty’. If I had a horse like the one you describe, I think I would try to pass cotton rope all over the horse’s head, if he’s overreactive, use a second rope(besides the lead rope on the halter) by holding it at both ends and pulling the rope from the withers towards the front of the horse so that it drags over the ears and poll(at a safe proximity to the horse). Only when he’s cooperative with all this rope-breaking would I try tying him up; you can use strong young trees as ‘patience polls’ once the horse knows how to yield to pressure. For lead ropes I use (5/8”) cotton ropes with overhand knots at the ends, no brass snaps that could pop a horse in the jaw or face, and just good rope halters. I think Warwick Schiller; Chris Cox, and Craig Cameron have the best lead rope desensitization and handling techniques online. I’ve seen Ty Murray ask a colt to lower his head as the very first thing in starting a horse’s training, to help teach the pressure and release concept as subtly as possible. Good luck!!
