How to Propagate and Grow a Wetstick! | Start to finish process! | P. Melanochrysum & more!
#propagation #nodes #propagate
In this video I go over how I propagate and grow a wetstick from start to finish. I decided to take a few different plants to propagate including the P. Melanochrysum import nodes that rotted. This is over 2 months of growing these and I'll make a part 2 where I will transition them out of Moss to a different substrate or I will pot them up. I hope this video is helpful!

Great video Melissa, thanks for sharing your experience. It's always cool seeing propagation progression videos like this. One of the neatest advantages of using the sphagnum for propagation is that the moss itself has a mild antifungal/antibacterial property that actually helps in combating damp off problems. For the really stubborn slow props I have found that using seed germination heat mats to be of great help in maintaining constant grow media temperatures giving the cuttings the ideal environment. 👍
aahh! I've been waiting for a video about this for so long. THANK YOU 😆 I've never been successful

Hi Melissa. I am a big fan of propagating in moss. I have some plants in there now and waiting to get roots. I also put seeds in sphagnum moss. 👏👏 you have a great method also. I love your pink grow light in the back. Can’t wait till you update us in the future. I save my clear spinach containers with lids and use them to propagate. I like to recycle plastic items and not throw them out to sit forever in our environment. Labels are important, so glad you covered this process. Thank you for sharing. 👍👍👏👏👏💕🌴🌴🌴🌸🌸🌸

Thank you! 🥰 Yes! I love using recycled food containers too! I just saved one tonight lol 👏🏼 I can’t wait until they grow more!
Very helpful, thank you 😊. I have not propagated wet sticks before as I just wasn’t sure how but will be giving this a go now!

Thank you for this video. I’ve never had success with wet sticks but after watching this I now know why! I always just sat the nodes on top of my moss and that’s it. So thank you!

I got an amydrium medium green form wet stick and I’m not even kidding, it took 2 YEARS to the month to sprout a leaf. 6 month later and it’s still a single leaf. Im afraid to remove it from the prop container. 😂 Also I’ve started putting charcoal powder on the ends of fresh cuttings. It definitely helps prevent rot.

2 years?! wow! That's definitely crazy and how stubborn of that wet stick! I would be afraid too! lol I haven't heard of charcoal powder hmm, that's interesting! I'll have to look that up!
This is amazing! I've been propagating 2 satin jade wetsticks for 5 months with ZERO growth. Roots or leaves. All my other items in my prop box (things that aren't wetsticks) are growing but not the satin jade. Happy to see your scindapsus are slow too, it's not just me haha.
This is the best video I have watched on wetsticks Thank you so much...You are a great teacher and content creator...Now if I can just save my Tacca black bat plant...

Thank you for an interesting video. I tried to propagate some wet stick from some my plants back over the summer. I got thrips on my plants and when I checked on my props, thrips had gotten into them so I had to dump them. I'm going to try it again soon.

I would watch for rot with a heat mat though with imports! I would keep an eye on them but imports are more susceptible to rot just with the transition 💚🌿

Yay! I hope it does well for you! I used to have one a long time ago it was a cutting but it ended up dying on me so hoping this time around it will do so much better and I'll have so many now :)
nice ! I have a monstera albo node and it's grown 2 leaves ! a third is coming now but I'm still nervous to transfer it to soil it's currently in moss and I have the whole thing in a cup inside a ziplock bag lol
@plantsbymelissa
Жыл бұрын
Aw, it sounds like you’ve done such a great job so far! The only thing with the plastic bag is the longer it stays in that environment, the harder for it to transfer out. The roots can be more susceptible to rot but as long as you acclimate it out it should do great. I feel monsteras are pretty tough! Albos like a lot of light and they do great in a chunky mix ☺️🌿

Nice!! Great job!
For any beginners that are looking to get some grow lights to help growth and props I highly suggest the LED full spectrum strip lights on amazon the one that has 8 strips instead of only 4! They have transformed my plants in only a weeks time!!! I’ve had them since Christmas and my plants are doing extremely well and a lot that were dying has a bunch of new growth! Even my hoyas cuttings are growing like crazy! If anyone would like me to make a video I can try and make one on my channel :)

Would you try propping wet sticks in fluval? I just purchased some and put my regular cuttings in it, with leaves. But wondered about just wet sticks.
@plantsbymelissa

Yep! I have some obliqua nodes in fluval and so far they’re doing great! The only thing with fluval is it dries faster so I just have to keep an eye on them more but I love it! I just ordered a new bag yesterday ☺️
Is sphagnum your most successful prop method? Thanks for the awesome vid and including your cats in the shots 🙂
@plantsbymelissa

Thank you! Yes, I love moss the best and used it to prop in for awhile! I recently started using fluval the past few months and I honestly love it! Definitely going to use it more. I still love water and do water props a lot too as well as perlite sometimes. I like that moss stays hydrated a bit longer but it can be a pain to remove once the plant roots.
hi I have a question. my monstera Thai had full root rot and has no roots left so I cut them all and waited for it to callous then I put it in water but no roots are growing. the stem just keeps rotting. do you think I can save it or is it stuffed?
Hey, How’s your Epiprimnum Marble? Hope it has a leaf! 💚 Good job on the Melanochrysum.

Thank you! Just a very tiny growth point that’s it so far :)
Can you prop wet stick in other mediums?
Have you ever propped a p.squamiferum or squamicaule? I'm struggling with a rehab squamicaule that I had to remove dead roots after shipping and it shortly after dropped its leaves. It's in my moss perlite prop box but not doing anything and ends keep rotting even though they aren't buried.
@plantsbymelissa
Жыл бұрын
I propagated a squamiferum before in water! I took a cut off of mine last year and rooted it. Rehabs are definitely hit or miss. Sometimes they just don't do well and it happens even though you're doing everything right. I would try to get it under good light and humidity and hopefully it will grow in some time 🙏
What about temperature for prop boxes? I have put mine on heat mat before but not sure if this necessary(or good)? I live where winter temps outside make my plant room drafty 🙁
@plantsbymelissa
Жыл бұрын
Heat mats can be good for props and can encourage them to grow better. My household temps usually don't get too cold with the heater on and the props still grow well as long as they can get some good light they'll root for you!
What's the best spagnum moss product you like to recommend?

Isnt sphagnum pronounced like sfagnum ??
Aren’t scindapsis slow growers? So they are probably slow to start putt g out new leaves from the wet sticks. Also what about the cuttings you out in water to grow. We haven’t heard about them yet.
@plantsbymelissa
Жыл бұрын
Yep! They take awhile to grow for me usually. I try to prop them with a leaf they seem to root and grow faster that way. The water props are doing great! They're still in water and have a lot of roots!
Why do they dry?? 💚
What's a wet stick?
