How I Saved My Dying Philodendron and Turned It Into 10 Baby Plants | Houseplant Update
In this houseplant update, we document the 7-month journey and relations of my Philodendron Melanochrysum. Everything from the first day of falling in love with this (at that time) rare houseplant, to the heart break of when I overwatered, and the leaves started to drop. To air layering a houseplant for the first time and doing some node cuttings and propagation. We’ve been through a lot, but through it all, the experience has definitely taught me to be a better plant parent. My relationship with my Philodendron Melanochrysum as never been better and a results, we now have 10 beautiful baby houseplants. Enjoy

His intros are legendary lol
Really love how you share the UPS and DOWNS as you experience the stages, it is encouraging to see that even in your level of expertise you can still encounter some oops moments in a humble way 💚

I’m excited to watch this premiere with you all. I’ll be able to answer your questions about my Philodendron and the journey we’ve had so far. If you have any questions, ask it in the comment section so we can cover it during the live chat tonight. 😁🌿

I like the part that you said you need a moment when you first got the plant and held it in your hands. Crazy but really lovely.
Soooo glad you ended up with ten happy babies and everted the melanocrisis!! Thank you for taking us along on your timetravel journey, and you were able to save your rare beauty of a philodendron. Can't wait to see them turn into ten beauties!!
This was an excellent video. Plants are alive and everything that is alive goes through crisis. Watching you plan and execute a recovery plan is a pleasure. Our plants have so much to teach us. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I just got my first melanochrysum this past week! So excited and thankful for the timing of this video 🙌🏼
Those are beautiful babies I’m so happy seeing you happy face! I just chopped and prop mine today. I was experienced the same problem.I can’t wait for to see my grow! ❤😊

Wise man... I love this experience you are sharing here! Thank you!
You probably won't even see this since it's an older video, but just in case you do I wanna 1st off say that I'm so so glad you were able to save & even multiply your amazing plant beauty.. Secondly, I want to thank you for sharing your journey. I know it's no melanochrysum or anything, but I'm currently trying to propagate a few leafless micans cuttings & your video will be very helpful now. And lastly, I have to say that I think you're just so freakin sweet & adorable. The excitement you feel is so beautifully palpable & heart warming that you were actually able to turn my crappy, blah mood into a much better one. The joyful "Ta-Da!" you'd exclaim as you revealed the new growth really made me smile☺️ Thank you again😁😁
I almost cry seeing your love for plants. I like too much the video, really helpful. Thank for share.

Thanks! So informative!
You are amazing! Plant love ❤️
I love when you do ‘ta da!’ I feel the excitement
So exciting! Glad you’re able to multiply this beauty. Did you completely close the propagation box? I wonder how you manage the air circulation and humidity with these propagation boxes
@CrazyPlantGuy
3 жыл бұрын
I close the lid, I’d open and check in on them to make sure the moss is damp and cuttings aren’t rotting, that’s when I allow air to circulate. Because it’s sphagnum bad not soaking wet and packed in, I don’t have any issues with mold.
So coooool....so helpful...Thank You!!!

Such a great video, have just brought a Philodendron Verrucossum and the the leaves are drooping - sigh! Hopefully I can save him 🤞🏾
Best intro!!!! 💚😂🌿
Thank you so much for this video 🙏 I've been wanting this plant for AGES and this year made that dream a reality. But both the cutting purchases I have made arrived half dead so I was so disheartened 😔 after watching this though, I feel like I know what to do to save them 🤞 😘

It’s so fun and exciting to propagate. Great way to expand your plant collection and give to friends or family.
I appreciate your mic
I like watching your videos and i love plants too learn to love.. same thing happen to my alocasia polly.. shes so pretty and i think i overwater it and start to deteriorate.. so brokenhearted.. i remove all dead leaves and only remain was the bulb with roots that seems ok.. but already decided to discard it. Hence i still try.. i wash the bulb and roots then put in fresh soil and pot then cover with it with another pot without hole.. few weeks later (i already forget about it), asni open the open i was relly surprise to see a sprout, now its has 2 small leaves. 🌱🥰
Im down for an update 🤗
The title is so good!!! xD
Best intro ever lol
Omg mine started doing the same thing like you’res! I just have a long stump 😩
I want to say thank you for all your videos. Really relaxes me and my anxiety. For now I live through you until I get my hands on some of these plants.☺️☺️☺️ Do you know if I can air layer a fiddle leaf? I have lots of leaves on top and the main branch is like 3 ft tall! 😂
@CrazyPlantGuy
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Glad you’re enjoying them. Yes you can air layering a fiddle leaf fig or you can notch it and promote new growth off the main branch/stem so that way you don’t need to cut any length off.

Love what you did with the cuttings. I do have a question, I have a cutting with one leaf and rooted. I had a beautiful leaf growing and I broke the baby leaf by knocking it off the table but have the older leaf. I was wondering if the plant will grow with the lose of the new leaf?
Very informative! 👍🏽👏🏻 I would probably do this method with my p. gigas it didn’t do very well with the shipping only 2 leaves survived and a long stem like your melano. 🙃 Hopefully it works, I’m so excited! thank you for this!! 😃🙏🏻🌱

When can I find a string of hearts in store or in nursery? Love your videos how you’re life has evolved from corporate work to life’s pleasures. Plants r so much more than pleasant to the eye... therapeutic 😘😍
I'm having a melanocrysis right now. The plant I ordered has turned up with the top half rotten :'(. I will try your rescue methods but i'm not confident. Thanks for trailblazing
Would you have multiple philodendron melanochrysum plants in one pot? I just got one and it has 4 plants in it. Should I separate them? What do you think? Great video! I learned so much from your experience!
Please give us an update please!

AMEN!
I just received a anthurium magnificum. I was going to ask you if I should put the root ball in water or sphagnum. It has two full leaves. I have it in water now overnight. Tomorrow I will put it in sphagnum. Is that what you would do ? It’s my wishlist plant. It has no roots really. Just a gigantic root stem. Looks like it was cut from ground ,cleaned and sent. Leaves are gorgeous !! Love your videos. Thank you for all you teach us ❤️

Congrats. Hmm I had my Flavolenautum like that where it was just a stem and no roots. I have mine now I s sphagnum moss. I had it in aroid soil mixture before and wasn’t doing anything...I would move it to sphagnum. Check out the anthurium video.
Been there, killed that 😢
I repot mine from soil to leca to mix of soil and pumice and now all pumice and the leaves burnt and becomes yellow, i dont knw if its too close to the grow light or what. Now i placed it outside maybe she likes it more out in the garden, lets see

Ohhh.....do you play the sax for your plants?
Hey, I'm your fan and now finding this video from you is like something from the blue u know, I bought a P. Melanochrysum and I don't know so much about plants and the first thing I did was a re-pot I have it in a south-faced windo with a lot of bright but not direct sun. Problem is that now is turning yellowish but I don't want to water it even if the soil is a little bit dry but I'm desperate because soil dries like in two days but I know that watering is each week so I don't know what to do, please help :(
Can you give me your soil mix recipe when you do plant it in an Aroid Mix without Spagum moss. I have my Melano in soil aroid mix and I really want to get it right ! Also, what is the best way to tell to water your Melano in Spag moss? I also have a baby one about 7-8 inches tall and in Spag moss.
can show how do you keep the propagation box moist enough to not rot the stem?
@CrazyPlantGuy
3 жыл бұрын
Making sure your moss isn’t soaking wet, but more on the damp side. Also important to not have any cuttings with rot or unhealthy ones. Check on it every other day (open the lid for a few mins) to allow some air flow.
What are you going to do with the propagation?? Will you be doing a giveaway? :) or will you be selling them? You should make a video on pest management! Hello Toronto neighbour!
When you finally get the roots long enough to go into a pot, do you take the sphagnum moss off the roots or plant it all in the soil?
@CrazyPlantGuy
3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the plant, but with Philodendrons, yes. Once the roots are long and well developed I've moved them into a well draining aroid mix.
Is there a difference between cloning gel and root hormone? I use the powder type.
Didnyoubhave a video on your pest management?
