ABOUT ME
I’m Fern! A 20-something gal living on beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada with my sweet lil doggo & around 100 houseplants. Plants have changed my life - I love tending to them and sharing the joys and discoveries of my planty journey online. I am passionate about all things living and I have been vegan for over 5 years - it was the best decision I’ve ever made. For those into astrology, I am a gemini sun, scorpio moon, & libra rising. I started out on social media with a focus on makeup/beauty/fashion and am not into it as much, but I do share on those topics from time to time. Thanks for stopping by!

Fern every video: "Thank you so much for joining me for another planty video" Me every video: "As if I have anything else, I'd rather be doing" ✌🥰 Also, idk if you do this or not, but I swish my wet sticks in a mild dishwater solution before popping them in a perlite box. Since doing so, none have rotted on me.

Random mystery prop fix I just started: I started placing them in groups the best I can then putting little washi tape labels on the lid. Doesn’t block too much light and easy to remove/move when I need to!
I recently added an aquarium bubbler to my water props with GREAT success. I had a rhapsodora tetrasperma cutting for MONTHS that kept rotting & it finally has long roots!!

I don't know why I haven't tried propagating in perlite. It looks fun. I've done some prop boxes and have had better success with water propagating mostly. It's nice to mix things up. As always, love your videos. When I'm not doing planty stuff I also draw while watching your videos and I find them soothing :) thank you for all you do!
Fern! Back with the goods as always 🥰 you inspired me to start my own channel way back in February and it’s made me so happy so thank you for doing you and being yourself ❤️

I just popped open a box and found a delightful surprise! I’ve been trying to root a albo cutting since winter and it’s finally taking off! Lol Whew!
I love your propagation videos! I'm currently propagating some wet sticks from my moms ivy vine, and with zero effort they all rooted and pushed out leaves for me! I'd never done it before, and never would have unless I saw your videos, so thanks! (someone stop me from taking a pair of scissors to Walmart with me next time I go 😆 totally kidding of course ...)

Hey Fern Happy Wednesday :)
I'm terrible with perlite propagations and rotting. I usually just use spaghnum moss in a starbucks cup and have much better luck. I don't know if I keep the box too moist or the leaves touch too much, but, I guess it's just not my medium. Lovely video though! Hope you're settling in well to your new home! xxx

All of your propagations are doing great! Love them all 🌿🌿🌿. Do you ever propagate a leaf only? I have some Hoya’s propagating and they do have roots....but didn’t know if the will produce more leaves 😢. My prop boxes are full of just about everything 😊
@hollypuckett3931
2 жыл бұрын
How exciting! If you've ever seen those single leaf Hoya kerii 'hearts', those are rooted leaves. Hoya leaves do root and will continue to live but without a node it's very unlikely it will push new growth ☹️ It can happen if there are enough cells from the node left in the cutting but for the most part, they're just sold as decor and aren't meant to. So, it's not to say it never will but it's improbable. 😕
Perlite propping is always the best
I'm constantly looking at my props so I'll never have a day where I'm not sure about what's growing 😂
Thanks for the video! I'm wondering how you avoid the perlite to turn green on the top?
I think you could be right, with the wet stick being a verrucosum, because of the redish roots 🥰
I love using my fishtank to prop pretty much anything! Sphagnum and perlite boxes are the runner ups tho 🪴🦐🐠

Do you have any planty friends? The holidays are coming, maybe you could gift them in pots you chose/decorate/customize for them? You could make cute little care cards to go with? Or pot them back in with the mother plant to create a filler pot?

@@hollypuckett3931 I don't have friends who are really into plants...mostly they just kill them. One of my friends tried to unload a gifted money tree from another friend on me. I'm curious about trade/buy/sell groups but not sure which to join. My husband just wants to use eBay, but I'm also trying to purge some large plants. 🤷♀️ I don't think my pilea pepermioides would survive shipping. I'm wondering about using Facebook Marketplace or some Facebook group.

@@janice4512 BST groups on Facebook are an excellent resource! Marketplace is also good 🙂👌 My town doesn't have much in the way of planty people but the ones I have found, I found through these channels! If you don't find one for your area, start one! Another way could be to make a general posting on your areas Community pages (my town has groups for community news and events, etc so something like this) just sorta introducing yourself and explaining that you've got some houseplants and ask for some suggestions where to post them, you may not even get to the BST page before you have people asking for them 😆👌 I hope you can find a way that works for you!

Alright Fern, I would like to know you favorite method with node propagation. I have some tae coming and I really want them to turn out good. I have seen submerging the entire node in water and then perlite.
I always find that in early fall after summer growth I do the most propagating! I’m currently propagating Hoya; Callistophylla, Sarawak, and Bella Albo Marg., Philodendron; White Princess and Silver Sword, and some Cebu blue! 🪴 I watched your perlite video way back when you were using jars and have loved perlite ever since! Since you asked for idea, I like to a time lapse of the wet stick - something all wrapped into one video where you sort of give monthly updates from initial cut ending when you pot up the new plant. How long it takes for various plants. Something to give those of us who have not done wet stick propagations what to expect so we don't get too impatient.

Fern, how do you keep your perlite boxes from algae growth? Mine just grows algae like nobody’s business!!
I really wish I could figure out the whole propagating in perlite thing 😅 everything I've tried so far has rotted. Your box looks awesome !
@hollypuckett3931
2 жыл бұрын
It may be too wet inside? You don't want any water in the box, just moist perlite. In my experience, I rinse it in a strainer and once it's no longer dripping, I put it in the box. I've had mine at least half a year and have never added water. Adding a ventilation hole or two (not too many because you WANT that high humidity) may help? Some people just remove the lid for a bit but I am too forgetful for that 🤣🤣 You could also try using perlite in a vessel with water, like water propping but with perlite. This method has been extremely useful for me with plants prone to rot! I just keep a small amount of water in the bottom, maybe enough to fill the bottom 1/3 of the perlite? I've saved a few rotting plants this way. Hope it helps ❤️
