Love the fish tail hoya cuttings....I will add that hoya hopefully this year to my collection! I wish I would have known about perlite for rooting years ago....this video is so helpfull...also that String if hearts was super big and rooted in water....all mine are still small so I have lots to look forward too!! Beautiful job! Spring is near!!

Thank you so much you have been so helpful I love the perlite it works so well and has saved several of my pants. I have been putting them in little cups in plastic boxes so the roots dont tangle up with the other plants .

Those roots on your alocasia just kept going and going 😂. Perlite prop boxes have been working great for me too. I have three Dieffenbachia reflector plants growing out and the oldest little leaves are plain green without variegation, so I wouldn''t worry. The bigger leaves are showing the lime green spots nicely.

Good Morning! I propagate in water and have a perlite prop box as well. Funny, it never dawned on me to put Jade cuttings in water. I suppose after seeing new plants grow from dropped leaves in the soil, I figured that was the best way. Thank God for you and your tests and projects 🤩😍. I really would love a Hawaiian Golden Pothos! Have you put one of those on a plank? My problem is too many propagations 😂🤣. Thanks for this video, another great one!🤩😍

I would stick propagation with Jades. I find it super easy to just plop them in soil. I do have a Hawaiian on a moss pole currently. It's growing so fast.

Well the thumbnail alone answered my question of whether I could waterroot my string of hearts

Hey William. They root so well in water. I once did a soil vs water experiment....the soil ones didn't do well at all.

@@EverythingPlants I didn’t notice much difference. I added the Brasil in to an existing pot. I had not tried water propagating on them before so no comparison. I tried to water propagate the Lacunosa first and it wasn’t working. Transferred to perlite. The only plant I’ve water propagated is my Golden Pothos. It grows like a weed no matter what I do to it. 🌿💚

I really need to try perlite propagating, haha. I'm so late to the trend. I tend to stick to water for most things and leca for hoya props but everyone seems to have a lot of success with perlite! Thanks for showing us!

I would consider transferring that gorgeous jade succulent water prop to leca or pumice instead of soil when it's time. As you mentioned it might struggle going to soil but it might be perfectly suited for a semihydro pot.

@@EverythingPlants hahaha, well. Jeff 🇨🇦, it's a small dilemma. But I guess. They are good for plant swaps with friends. Possibly. Have fun 😊 with them. At least they were fun to grow especially the Jade plant. What a stunning, set of roots.

I root all my cuttings in water first. It's a success pretty much everytime, some cuttings end up rotting in water. I haven't had much luck with propagating in perlite, nor sphagnum moss, they just end up rotting.

No method is 100% I prefer perlite because there is a minimal transition period for the plant compared to the water to soil method.....that's all. All methods are great

I have not tried prop boxes yet. I will eventually! All my propagations I have in water I put a cutting of golden pothos in them and it does help rooting a little faster esp for those that take forever to root lol. I just love your videos I learn so much from you?

I bought a jade plant that had every single branch broken off. Trying one in water, one in sphagnum and one in soil. Didn't even think of perlite. A leaf from my thanksgiving cactus broke off and I have it in perlite. Ridiculously long roots! I guess I should switch one to perlite.

Another Great video! I’d love to find a Hawaiian pothos….so pretty! I started a small pothos in perlite … honestly I don’t even know what it is. I purchased one that has green and white varigation and leaves are much different in the same pot. I’m confused …..pearls and jade, manjula, marble queen IDK who’s who lol but I do love the plant so I decided to put a few small leaves in perlite. The leaves were pretty small and the roots in comparison looked great so I put it in a tiny pot with soil. Right away it drooped all over the place 😕 I thought it was a goner, but then I put the pot in another covered plastic container and like magic they stood up again. 👍my monstera took a nose dive big time so I chopped it down and propagated some nodes in moss and they are growing slowly … after this vid I placed them in perlite so 🤞One question for you when you chop down large plants in their original pots how or do you adjust your watering?

For monstera deliciosa....I propagate directly into soil. You'd need a pretty big perlite prop box. I believe for my monstera cutting I let it stay dry for a couple days then watered lightly. Just enough so that the aerial roots would be exposed to water. I don't soak the entire pot because the plant obviously doesn't have roots to soak up that moisture which can quickly rot the stem. I hope this helps.

I find myself propagating in perlite more and more. I see less rotting than water and it's so much easier to clean off the roots than moss.

No.....generally a couple inches in length is just fine

Omg so many propagations 🍃🌿🪴🌱🙌🏼 It’s winter and I’m trying to propagate under grow light since we hardly have any sun right now. It’s taking long. But I pulled some cuttings out of water and trying the perlite. I just got a new Micans and put them in perlite, I hope it works under grow light! Any suggestions for winter propagating? I added too much water in perlite so now have to go outside and remove all the excess, some videos say leave some water, but you make sense, transition is easier with less water, since I am going to eventually transfer cuttings to soil.

Perlite is awesome. I have no water sitting in the bottom of the container. I rarely have to add water into my prop boxes. If you open them up often then just keep an eye on the moisture levels. I hope your props do great!

I would love to see some info on semi-hydroponic for house plants, if you do any of that? I have some plants in pumice with a water reservoir, which I love instead of soil - but not sure what brand of nutrients is best?

I have a calathea orbifolia (small plant) growing in leca as a little experiment. Honestly, I use dyna grow foliage pro and I simply diluted it in water (like a very small amount) and it seems to be okay. I am not going to buy something special for just one plant hahaha

As always very informative and details are in-depth. Question how do you water the perlite?. Do you mist it or just add water periodically? I personally haven't but seeing is believing. Interesting for sure. I might just give a try see what happens. Love your videos tho!

I’m a perlite or water propagator and I also find moss to be problematic on multiple fronts.

Nice! I know it is a very effective rooting method, but moss is so tough to get off some roots.

Great video and advice, I just "discovered" your channel. I have 2 questions. Do you stick the cuttings directly on dry perlite? How do you hydrate your perlite without it having a layer of water on the bottom, or it all floating to the top? I have used pumice which is a bit heavier but more pricey. Thanks!

Hello Iris. I'll link a video before and the setup starts around 6mins in. When I first set up the box I soak the perlite them strain out all the water. This allows all the perlite to be wet. I then add the cuttings. If the perlite gets dry over time, I use a spray bottle to wet the perlite again....but no pooling off water at the bottom. kzread.info/dash/bejne/omt7qa-Lic6WYaQ.html

I have rooted Dieffenbachia stem cuttings in potting soil and they rooted. However, it took around 2 months until new shoots began to emerge. Does perlite speed-up the process? What is the time scale for stem cuttings compared to tip cuttings, and does perlite make it root faster?

Some plants definitely take longer than others. I have had success rooting dieffenbachia in water, but in an opaque container. For whatever reason they take longer if the container is clear. I am unaware if perlite has any change on the rate of root growth....I've yet to try it with dieffenbachia

When cutting stem, do you use any medical for root growth?

Hello. Most times I make the cut and place it directly into the water or perlite. I don't place anything on the cuttings.

I have never propagated a dischidia before, but I definitely would have done it in the perlite prop box. They would be very similar to a hoya. What is happening to your cuttings?

@@EverythingPlants I have some 3 inch strings and several leaves that seem like they are getting softer every day. Some start to go translucent. I initially laid them on top of the perlite but after seeing your instructions, I went back and brushed the perlite over the stems. My thought is it couldn’t hurt to have more contact. I also moved the box under a grow light - it’s a recycled spring mix lettuce box so it’s deep and clear on all sides and top. Oh well, if t doesn’t work, I’ll try again.

How much perlite do you use for propagating??? I've tried snake plant cuttings and both have rotted. Amy suggestions, I have more cutting that have calloused and want to try again. I've been successful with water, but want to try perlite. Thanks in advance.

I guess it depends on the size of the box you are using. I like to fill it about half with perlite.

Do you trim the propagated plants roots if they too long when they in the water or before back in the soil? Like all the green videos

I don't usually let them get this long. I potted up the Alocasia (video to come soon) and I didn't cut any roots. It is enough of a shock potting in soil....I did want to shock it any more so I just left them. I'm not sure of this is the right thing or not lol

I usually propagate in water because I have not had any success with other mediums but I saw monko_the_plant propagate in perlite a little differently from what I am used to seeing so I tried her method and so fa, it has been going great. The cutting I have of a heartleaf philodendron that was not rooting in water rooted in perlite. I am also trying out wet stick prop in perlite and hope it would be successful.

@@EverythingPlants From what I've seen people do with perlite prop, they usually put the perlite in a container then put the cutting on top of the perlite then add a bit of water at the bottom of the container, very similar to semi hydro. But what she does is she puts the perlite in a container, like a glass, then puts that container in a box with about maybe an inch of water in the box. There is no water in the container where the cutting is. She also says that she doesn't need to rewet the perlite since it usually stay moist maybe because of the humidity in the box.

I have never propagate a fern before...they usually produce side growth which can then be seperated. I have never seen a water propagated fern....sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I've had equal success and failures with peperomia. I would still recommend the water method....obtusifolia have always been pretty easy for me.

Whatever I put in a water to grow roots never have been like you I see in your video it gets bad and they die to what’s the secret

I do have some, but I've never noticed a difference.....so I don't use it for any of my props right now.

There is a theory that goes around quite often about having an opaque or completely blacked out vase of water for cuttings to root in, have you found any better or worse success with cuttings doing this? Personally I found that most of my cuttings root just fine in a clear or translucent jar, but I will say that my more succulent like plants like my variegated whale fin and raven ZZ cuttings seem to like the darker environment :)

The only plant I've ever had an issue propagating in a clear container is a dieffenbachia. As soon as I placed in an opaque container it grew roots.

Not really....I probably should as plants clearly grow way faster. I have taken one of my Jades outside and it exploded with growth. I'll probably do that again this year
