I watched this video not too long ago, and wanted to come back and tell you my experience with a propagation I am doing as you have shown in your video. I am fairly new with my plant obsession, (less than 6 months) so learning as I go. I had 2 good sized cuttings from a large monstera deliciosa that I tried propagating in soil. After several weeks, it wasn't looking so good, so I removed it from the pot to check out what was going on. I think there was a problem with drainage, because it was starting to get root rot. Btw it had not even started sprouting any new roots. The rot was on the bottom of the stem and on the small aerial roots. I wanted to save it so I cut off the rot part, and put one cutting in water and the other in perlite as you do in your video. It's been a couple weeks and I look at the one in water everyday to see if there is any root growth and no new rot. There is finally a root appearing that is approximately 8mm, and I was so excited. I didn't want to disturb the cutting in perlite, but was so curious to see how it was doing, and when I took it out, there were probably 10 white roots growing that were 2-3 cm long. I couldn't believe it, especially because the cutting in perlite was in worse shape than the one in water, so I was doubtful that it would make it! I put it back in the perlite and I'm going to let the roots grow a bit longer before potting up. I just had to tell you how helpful your video was, and I am going to be using this method for some other propagations. Thank you!🙂💟🌱🌿

three questions: 1. do you re-use the perlite medium after you've rooted ? what's the protocol? 2. Is there a recommended perlite size? i've seen three different textures offered and wanted to select the best type for rooting. 3. at what point is it safe to transfer outside into the ground from potting soil? Great Video!! I hope my questions aren't silly. .. I'm new to this and really excited to give it a go. I haven't found any videos that cover the "rooting to potting soil then into the ground. Any responses are much appreciated.

I’ve had great success with perlite with no standing water at all. I use pots with drainage holes covered with a mesh to keep the perlite from washing out. I visit my plant propagation table every day and pour a bit of water through until it runs out the bottom (into a large tray). In this way the roots get water and air.

Yes there is another KZread man who does this method as well. Pot with drainage, no cache pot, but waters everyday. Gets good water and air circulation.

The whole point of perlite is that it provides airflow and moisture, as well as nutrients if you water it with nutrients.🌿✨　I think if you’re going to fill it up with water all the way, it cancels out all the benefits of perlite, making it the same as just using water 💦 For me, I love water propagation for almost all my plants because the roots grow fast, and I can monitor the progress everyday ❣️But perlite propagation was super successful for hoyas 🥰🪴

I would say that the roots would probably grow stronger than just water because the roots would need to work harder to stick out through the perlite rather than just grow out freely in the water without restriction.

@@ivanfung8661 You are correct. When the roots rub against & work through a substrate they develop a tougher cuticle which transitions better to soil. Pumice is another good choice. It hold water & air so even when it vessel is full with water there is still oxygen available to the roots

when you cut a rotted stem/roots of Hoya, do you let it dry out or callus first before putting it in perlite? or it is not necessary?

Just two cents for the timesavers: in my experience you don't really need to soak the perlite overnight or for hours on end. Just rinsing it through a netted colander like rice, or even just mixing water in has worked with 100% of my cuttings at least :D

Does the perlite need to stay wet? I've had my cuttings in some perlite for about 48 hours now and just checked on it and the top perlite is dry, and below is just damp.

​@@hannahlong2361 I usually start out with enough moisture that it has a shallow layer of water at the bottom, and then I mist it thoroughly about once a week until it has some water at the bottom again (around half an inch or so, depending on how much you layered in your jar before placing the cutting). I use the layer of clingfilm over the mouth of the jar and "jacketing" the stems, which really helps retain humidity as she said in this video, and I place the cuttings near my humidifier for good measure. I see a lot of people using humidity domes as well, I think this is a good idea if you use nursery pots for the perlite as a lot of the moisture will go out through the drainage holes. I find perlite and leca feel dry to the touch quite fast, but if you fear the perlite in your jar is really too dry, adding some more water should be fine as long as the roots don't bathe in it. You wouldn't want them to rot! Best of luck, hope this helped even a little!

​@@hannahlong2361 It can retain a good bit of moisture on the inside although it feels dry to touch on the outside, especially the top layer that gets more air. You could try crunching some perlites between your fingers and see, if they feel dry on the inside some way down the jar, watering should be due. Mine usually still cling to my fingers some way down the pot at the point in the week when I water again, but these things depend on your climate too! I live in a colder country with less sunlight. Play around with it a bit, I think it's a pretty forgiving method as long as you don't have a waterlogged or abandonded jar :)

It works! I am leaving my plants in the perlite for as long as I can. It is cost effective, less hassle and no more fungus gnats💚

Sorry guys forgot to mention about perlite:- Perlite is an inert and. This is perfect for those of us propagating plants as we aren’t going to bring in any unwanted pathogens and diseases. Perlite is pH neutral which is perfect for the propagation of most plants. The water retention capabilities of perlite are perfect for cuttings. It will drain away any excessive moisture but holds enough to promote root development. Perlite will not deteriorate overtime and this allows oxygen to flow through the gaps which is great for root development. Perlite is available in a variety of “grades” or sizes. Perlite is a natural product. Perlite is a volcanic rock and can be safely used on heating mats which provide bottom heat to the developing roots- very effective for improving cutting success rates and propagating plants during winter hope that experience everything about the actual perlite love you all.

This video is fantastic for me and just what I’ve been looking for forever. So easy to understand the whole process. I have some other questions regarding my Ruby and my Fiddle Leaf, but I’ll ask in a couple of days. I want to try this right now. Thank You sooooo much

GREAT VIDEO. Kudos to great info, great demo, and being so straightforward and honest. I think the results occurred with dry perlite and then filling up with water, which would have the same result as soaking and the water reservoir at the bottom (first shown). I have used perlite for more than 40 years. Yes 40. It is one of my main prop tools. There has been a lot on sphagnum moss as it is used by many commercial growers. The benefit for commercial growers is they usually have greenhouse, controlled humidity and misting systems. The light weight nature is also a benefit for shipping. Moss is not as "messy" and has no dust, so less cost in labour. So, that doesn't make it the best prop medium, it makes moss a very useful medium. For home prop perlite has numerous advantages: it really works as noted, it is easy to transition to the main growing substrate; compared to moss it is easy to keep at a better moisture leave, and not dried out for most folks; the chance of rot is much lower for most plants.

I'm glad you have this video. I had purchased a giant hawiian pothos and it's looking terrible. I decided to do straight to soil and is just going down hill slowly. Roots look fine and I've done perlite growth before but with succulents and had success. But succulents needing less water than this cutting I wasn't sure how to go about it. Thank you

I've done this with some rhaphidophora tetrasperma cuttings after I lost a few to rot in water and leca. It worked wonders! Since then I did all my propagations this way and haven't lost a single cutting 😍 The only thing I do differently is to put the cuttings and Perlite in a pot which I then put in a dish with water. This way I can flush the Perlite once in a while and I think it's easier to control the amount of water :) (It's not that easy to pour out water of a closed container if you by accident filled it too high) To minimize the risk of rot I always make sure that the water level is below the stem.

Thanks for this video! I haven’t seen anyone else actually SHOW the whole process like that, which is so helpful for me since I just started getting into plants! I’m trying to prop a larger schefflera stem & it’s quite woody…from other people’s experiences, it could take months to form roots. Would you change out the water? I’m worried about having months-old standing water go bad.

Hi! I've been propagating in water for many, many years now, I honestly don't know why I've never done it in perlite. My other method was just to stick it in the ground after it's callused for at least 24 hours, that's usually a 50/50 success rate, even with pothos/philo/scindapsus(es). I came across this video & like, oh duuuuh. 😁 Question to anyone reading: does anyone add fertilizer to their cuttings? And, if so, what kind? TIA, plant people! PS. Thanks for the video, too!

great video! I just started propigating some adansonii in perlite and this video was so helpful. just had one question tho. in your version, do you to change out the water at all (for example, every week so the same water isn't sitting there for too long) or just top it up when it gets too low?

Why do you need the perlite at all if you are using a full container of water? Isn't it just like straight water propagate them? Isn't it the same thing?

Hi even though its in full water the perlite is good to make the roots stronger and ready for when you put it in soil it feels at home, has no problem adjust to soil. 🥰

@@bigtoes7263 after I cut everything back, I put it in a jar of perlite for a week, I did begin to see new water roots. Very small and honestly got nervous about it rotting.. due to sitting in the perlite with water, once I began to see the growth, I put it in a pot. Honestly, I haven’t seen any change in it.. and I really don’t know what else to do with it 😔 lol

Great video, this was super insightful thank you 💚 Loved watching and learning. By the way I don't know if you know this already, but when you held up your hand it put the roots out of focus because the camera kept switching between focusing on the cutting and on your hand. Before you put your hand up it actually focused perfectly because your clothing was dark. So next time hold up something dark behind the cutting or just wear dark clothing again. You can turn the display screen towards you when you're filming so you can check if things are in focus, that's what I would do

I was excited to start using your technique. It's my first time using perlite with water. Im usually a water propagation person. So few days ago I had 8 Raven ZZ cuttings. I did exactly as you said even went to buy more perlite and plastic wrap. I checked on my stems today. And the bottom are all slimy. I'm so confused how this happening. I topped it with perlite as well as filled it up with water then I covered it with plastic wrap. I'm now taking all Raven stems out of the 5 glass jars. I need to cut all the stem that started rotting into mush. Please help

Great video, what do you use for your potting mix, please? I so needed this super clear vid today. Just discovered that my Monstera Thai has root rot and I had to cut 60% of its beautiful roots. I disinfected and popped the plant in perlite coz Im afraid to put it back into my potting mix. 😫

I recently used perlite I use no draining holes but I usually check every 3 days to make sure it's wet enough.

Thank you for your informative Video. I want to know, can i do a little bit natural fertilizer in the bottom of the Jar? Or mixing with water and put the perlite in it? I see good results in water propagation. But i don't know to do that in perlite. Can anybody say about that?

I once loved seeing roots in water/perlite ... but now I need to see fast leaves too! so I end up moving them to the soil asap :D what do you do of the used perlite after you move the baby to soil? do you pop another cutting in it? or do you treat/wash it in any way before reusing?

Like your show I'm new in this propagate with perlite, can one still grow roots with out a mode? or is better in water. thanks for any info.

I added some worm casting in some of my propagations with just water for an experiment. So far it hasn’t been long enough to tell any difference

Nice video. I accidentally broke the main stem of my new monstera yesterday while repotting.. i will try this perlite propagation to grow back roots.. is it necessary to keep this bottle filled with perlite and plant near window for indirect sunlight???

Hiii that's great to hear I have been of help, not all plants are going to take to perlite propagation and also we are not all good at some of the propagation methods im really bad with propagating with moss, the best thing you can do is cut of the Rotting parts and try a propagation method that works for you, and if you still want to give perlite a go try a little water just some at the bottom 1/3 but keep a eye on it so it doesn't dry out all the best and thanks for your support 🥰😘

What about mixing perlite and leca together? Filling the bottom half with perlite and topping the remaining 50% with leca, does that do anything like slowly down the evaporation?

No I just top it up if I need to.

Use a is spade and a funnel next time that will help with the clumsiness.

Weird question maybe, but do you keep these on a heating pad as well? I've heard that is a huge plus to make sure they take to rooting and happens faster than not

@@arie_rogers87 when using sphagnum moss make sure its not too wet, it just needs to be slightly moist. for humidity you can keep it in a container, plastic bag or anything with a lid. when you place it with some sunlight, in the bathroom, heating mat, an enclosed room it will build up humidity. once the moss gets a bit dry i just spray it with some nutrient water ( a few sprays) and then close back the lid. also make sure you have holes and or a gap from the lid so air can circulate to prevent mold from occurring.

Trying this now. Can I just put the prop jars in a Rubbermaid container instead is clear wrap on top?

I'm wondering about the part where you said "Don't forget to use the clean film or else it will dry out and you can get root rot." How can you get root rot from the roots drying out? It was my understanding that root rot is from the roots staying too wet.

Because roots are alive, they use and live in water. But if they dry out they die, and turn into just a dry,dead,organic thing. Then when you water it the dead roots rot. Dry roots+water=rot and that rot can continue until it gets to the plant. Have a nice day ❤️❤️

I never do 🥰 but you can do ever 3 mouths but I find by then the plant is ready to pot up.

I have a question. My variegated monstera had root rot I had perlite will save it. As I did it overnight the next day the leaves droop and very dry.. and the water I put is under the roots. What should I do?

I'm so sorry to hear that, I did show what worked for me, I totally understand there's some other propagation methods that also don't work for me but work for others with plants its sometimes very difficult to understand all the best.

sterilize your cuttings first before you place it in perlite.
