Thank you for your lesson Neil. It will keep me busy here in Montana where your countryman Thomas Mahers’ statue stands in front of our capitol.
Great video and great explanation. Loved it. Just FYI for anyone else that was confused by this: The way you teach the hammer on section, is not actually how you play it a lot of the time. See 6:08 - 6:13 for a good example. The first time you do it (at 6:09) you hammer on after strumming the D string, which is how you teach it. But the second time (at 6:11) you hammer on after strumming the B string. When you play the song at the start of the video you hammer on after strumming the B string most of the time. I actually think it feels more natural to do the hammer on after the B string given the low-E, D repeating bass line.

Thanks Mike, well spotted and agreed the hammer on!

I'd like to suggest that this section has several omissions. The most difficult for me was figuring out that it's actually a double hammer-on at this section and that there is seemingly a final thumb pick on the 4th string before returning to G. (I think).
Thank You so so much Neil. Your heartfelt singing and playing of this most timeless and beautiful song by a true Master human being... John Prine.... is inspiring. That you bothered to share your learning with us is greatly appreciated. The fact that this great humorous and humble man is now in extreme danger from the Covid-19 virus, brings floods of tears to my eyes as you play. Thank You.
This has been one of my favorite songs for more than 25 years, and now I finally know how to play it. Thank you so much for your wonderful tutorial!

This is brilliant. One of my favourite songs and a fantastic clear tutorial. Thanks very much.
Outstanding lesson in how to play this great song. The picking pattern is spot on. Thanks for this.
Neil, thank You so much for this! Such a Great job all around. I know you had to put in a lot of work figuring this song out! I really appreciate you sharing it with everybody here. I'm trying to learn this and Souvenirs, for a start. My best friend passed away 3 years ago from kidney failure. He was the biggest John Prine Fan I know. My late Friend's wife asked me to learn a couple of songs in Honor of Steve, so that's what I'm doing. I'm actually just discovering his music, and I'm hooked! Can't believe I waited so long. Thanks again for this. God Bless.
Came looking for a tutorial. Stayed for the amazing soul in your voice. Well done.
This was one of the best tutorials on you tube that I have ever seen, for me personally. I have been trying to learn guitar for about 4 years now and if I can't learn this song from how you taught it, I may as well sell the guitar. Great job!
Beautiful! You confinced me some years back to buy this second hand sigma (my first guitar) happy to come across another video op you. You play so well. I gave the sigma away though to a dear girl and have the privilege to play a faith 🎸 these days. Enjoy playing alot. Thankyou Neil

Hey man, great playing and thanks for the lesson; your pace is slow enough for a dunce like me. After a few days work this song is starting to take shape for me...so enjoyable.
That's really sweet. Helped me fill in the gaps in my picking style for this matchless song. I saw a video. I think I saw a hammer on the second string first fret when he's playing the F#, but its hard to see. You play really well!!
Excellent lesson! Thank you very much! I so look forward playing this at our friends next singalong.Soren x

Great lesson ! I just about have it down (yay).I would love to hear you do your own version. I have to admit it surprised me when you started talking (I don't know why) I guess I thought JP didn't make it across the pond. It's great that you are moved by JP. Thanks and I hope you do more lessons and video's.
Great playing! Thank you!
Helping me get through this tough time...thank you! 💔 -At regular speed, when you're playing the A7 chord it looks like you're hammering on the 2nd string and not the 4th. I'll mix it up and play it both ways...great video! Cheers!
Fantastic pick man. Nice job
Thank you very much for your lesson. It's very clear.

Neil I was going to try to find the sheet music today and I found you in my box this morning. I love this song. I also would like to know if you can play Souvenirs and also Inspite of our selves or Paradise all written by John Prine. Your rendition of his music is beautifully done, over the top. Thank you so much.
Thank you for this. Very helpful.

Hey Neil, thanks so much for the tutorial of one of my favourite Prine songs. Still trying to suss out the Travis picking, so any help is always appreciated. Fantastic cover by the way. I found out recently that John and Fiona Prine had a house in your part of the world.
Are you kidding...I love playing it but I play it pretty straight all the way through. I love the part of the lyrics that goes "I wish you don't do like I do and ever fall in love with someone like you". Sent the song to the the love of my life who had just dumped me. Thank you so much. I'll try hard to play it as it deserves to be played. There is a good live version on KZread of a young Prine playing it somewhere.

Neil, if you look through similar videos of John Prine and other tutorials, you will see that, what makes yours special is the step-by-step, string-for-string explanations that really make everything crystal clear for the learner.

Thank you for your video. I tend too beat myself up picking with two fingers. I try using three and things get bad. Thanks again. I'll keep on pushing forward. 👍
This is great, man - thanks!
Thank you so much a brilliant tutorial. 👏
Great thing is that if you can get this down, you're so close to being able to play Clay pigeons as well. Same chords but capo on 3rd
Great tutorial. I won't lie I was surprised to hear the Irish accent when you spoke. Great singing

I feel like I have five thumbs, but this is a great inspiration. I love John Prine, and after his passing I decided to pick up my grandfathers 1947 Martin and try to learn a couple of his songs...kinda of my own personal tribute. One thing I'm not sure of is how to transition from the G pluck to the hammered "hook"...seems like I'm missing a note or beat in there somewhere. I'm trying to learn All the Best, Souveniers, and Speed of the Sound of Loneliness...a tall order for someone who doesn't play guitar, but it's coming slowly but surely. Thanks for the lesson!

Great tutorial
Thank you for this!!! It’s absolutely wonderful. I used to play this in C with no capo. This sounds so much more authentic and in his vocal key. Also, your guitar is beautiful. What model please ?🙏 Thank you !!
That was perfect. Exactly what I needed. Would you be able to do The Sins of Mesphisto?
Great man! Thank you! Do you think you can work out souvenirs by John prine?
Hell yea it's only right big thanks
Thank you !! How about one on the Sins of Memohisto? Can’t find that anywhere

Thanks Neil. After a few screen grabs and focus on the headstock label, I found your guitar. I know they are replicas at a much lower cost. Which would you prefer? The Martin or the Sigma. BTW - way super job with the Prine song. I shared with it with my musically talented brother and he was able to keep up with you. However you have that magical something that you can only be born with. Thanks!!
