Lyrics:
I wish you love - and happiness
I guess I wish - you all the best
I wish you don't - do like I do
And never fall in love with someone like you
Cause if you fell - just like I did
You'd probably walk around the block like a little kid
But kids don't know - they can only guess
How hard it is - to wish you happiness
I guess that love - is like a Christmas card
You decorate a tree - you throw it in the yard
It decays and dies - and the snowmen melt
Well, I once knew love - I knew how love felt
Yeah I knew love - love knew me
And when I walked - love walked with me
And I got no hate - and I got no pride
Well, I got so much love that I cannot hide
Yeah, I got so much love that I cannot hide
Say you drive a Chevy - say you drive a Ford
Say you drive around the town 'till you just get bored
Then you change you mind - for something else to do
And your heart gets bored with your mind and it changes you
Well it's a doggone shame - and it's an awful mess
I wish you love - I wish you happiness
I wish you love - I wish you happiness
I guess I wish - you all the best

I'm in the same boat. I'm almost 60 and I fund out who he was after a buddy of mine posted a video of The Zac Brown Band doing their version of this song. Both are very different from each, but both great in their right. John was an amazing talent and was kind enough to leave us all here his great legacy of songs. I would've loved to have been at this performance.

Just wrote this for John Prine. I call it: Just for John. I guess you gone And that you had to leave Like the rain that falls down With the Autumn leaves And that rain As it hits the dirt Can it quench this flame? Wash away the hurt? Well I'm not sure Just how things go Absurd how we run When we can't touch our toes But it's common sense I mean it just seems fair That no one should do What they cannot bear And tonight you're free And tonight I cry You left me standing Like I don't know why Yes here I stand Although I'm on my knees Out in the rain On the Autumn leaves Where the rain does fall Relentlessly And tonight I cry And tonight you're free And it ain't just But it's just like you To go and leave Before you're time is through Well I do hope You make it home And that you get as far away From all alone That you find some peace That you find some rest You flew the coop I hope you find a nest What you did No one could do There will never be No one like you And tonight you're free Tonight I cry You left me standing Like I don't know why.
