After travelling Scandinavia, I travelled every then-28 countries in summer 1996. For a journey like that, here is the top tip: Do only a rough planning before the trip. Do detailled planning every day for 3 days in advance. That is the way to react on situations and changes and on the other hand to avoid time consuming dead ends. I finished my trip after 28 days.

You don't plan a interrail trip, you just do it ;)
