Was also thinking maybe a money belt for emergency separate cash, a second credit card and your passport in case your main backpack gets lost/stolen...

After travelling Scandinavia, I travelled every then-28 countries in summer 1996. For a journey like that, here is the top tip: Do only a rough planning before the trip. Do detailled planning every day for 3 days in advance. That is the way to react on situations and changes and on the other hand to avoid time consuming dead ends. I finished my trip after 28 days.

Planning is something for milennials, me (63) like to go where the weather games me to. Spontainious travel... Is an unknown thing nowadays.

Interrail gedaan in 1981!

Hi, does a night train use up two days of InterRail travelling? I ask because one day of travelling is midnight to midnight but an overnight train is clearly just one journey. Many thanks

READ THIS BEFORE CONSIDERING INTERRAIL: Myself and my partner recently bought 2 discounted tickets for 7 days travel to use within a month. We were extremely chuffed with the discounted price and the idea of a cheaper way to travel for our summer holiday. We then used interrails app to plan our trip, it was only when we logged into our account that we realised that we would have to double our costs in order to get on our chosen trains. Some reservation fees were quoted as €120 for 2 people, from Barcelona to Marseille. Furthermore, being less than 8 days before we travel, interrails online reservation service wouldn't work. After searching high and low for a customer service number, I spoke to someone who then managed to get my complaint email sent on to the appropriate people. I then waited 2 Days for a response, in which I was told that they would give me an "exceptional" pass exchange. (After looking at other comments here, it's clear it's not exceptional). In order to exchange my pass, I need to get to a train station, get it stamped, send it back (at my expense) and then purchase another ticket (at full price this time) and then they will give me a refund minus €15 exchange fee. Needless to say, I extremely unhappy with this "resolution". Interrail is a company that exploits those who cannot afford it. They should be ashamed of themselves. For those of you considering interrail, don't do it! Save your time and money, it's really not worth the stress. Interrail have ruined my summer, and left me completely out of pocket and without a holiday.

A bit of research - and I mean a bit and you'd know about the reservation fees, there's even a guide to fees on the interrail website. In France/Spain/Italy fees are really high, most other countries they're optional or less than 10 euros each

I'm from Manchester, England and I start my interrail trip next week. I spent £26 getting to France. Coach to London = £5 Coach to Dover = £5 (One night in Dover, there is two hostels both £15 but they are disgusting, like vile. I paid £39 for a room at the Premier Inn near the docks) Ferry to Calais as a foot passenger = £16 (Book it as a day return, even though you're doing a one way journey, it will save you £14) I then take the train from Calais to Dunkirk = £8.50 then take the bus to Bray Dunes 1.50 Euro) then walk to De Panne, Belgium. Then I spend the night there then take the train to Bruges, two nights then I start my pass. Going to Germany, Austria, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany again, straight across to Paris up North to Calais then ferry again (£16) then coaches again (£10) Hostels paid for, spent less than £100 for 26 days. Look out for the cheapest options, try to spend two-three days in each stopover, learn how to budget and get the local feeling, eat like a local like buy stuff from the supermarket and cook it in the hostel, take a big bottle of water wherever you go so if it runs out top it up, obviously don't be cheap if you fancy a soda then buy one, eat out once a week on your trip. Don't buy the cheap tat that venders sell, buy things that will truly remind you of that place! Don't be afraid to talk to people, be on your guard. In your hostel get to know your room mates. Go on pub crawls in the evenings, hang out and see the city and have fun with them. It will make for such fun!! I've travelled Europe before, I mean for travel to and from France, for a rail pass £239 is a bargain, I won't turn that down! I'll be in Europe between 12th April - 7th May, if you're knocking about give me a shout! Note that I will spending the first two nights in each city then taking trains outside of the city to explore the country a bit more. London 10th April, for five hours Dover 10th April De Panne 11th April Bruges 12th - 14th April Vienna 14th - 16th Belgrade 16th - 20th Banja Luka - 20th - 22nd Zagreb - 22nd - 25th Ljubljana 25th - 28th Budapest 28th - 30th Bratislava - 30th - 1st May Prague - 1st - 4th May Cologne - 4th - 6th Calais - 6th - 7th Early morning ferry to Dover, back in Manchester for 5pm.

TrueElemental ASMR Yes I am going alone, going allow gives you more freedom but it can be awfully lonely that's why you should be yourself and be open minded. I have met some great people along the way. Some hostels provide pans, plates etc as some have a stove to cook. Just be wary, the hostel in Dover had a disgusting kitchen. So them times I visit a street vender.

  • @danielmarsden4563

I wouldn't say I have tips, I think when you travel you just have to act as you would be yourself. However I do have these tips; - When travelling on Metro or bus/train keep your bags in clear sight as thieves are crafty and will steal from you without you knowing - Do not show off money, phones or cameras as you may become a victim to violent robbery - Take a daytime bag with you, that way you can carry your important documents such as your passport etc with you at all times - Don't make strict plans, go with the rythm and get out and throw yourself into everything that comes your way - Note down the address of your embassies, before you leave write directions down from your hostel to embassy just in case something happens. Don't be scared, have fun as everything that happens even the bad stuff such as missing the train makes for an adventure and when you're home and reflect back on it you will look at it with joy, such journeys make you think about what you want in life.
