HOW TO PAINT HIGHLIGHTS IN WATERCOLOUR - WITHOUT WHITE PAINT
Painting highlights with watercolour can be tricky - particularly as we don't use white paint - tonal value plays an important part - in this video I show you how to paint this shiny blackberry with watercolour - so you can level up your watercolour.

Gorgeous painting Helen. What a good tip to have a small amount of clear water on your palette. Thank you.

Love the careful, quiet way you paint. It’s like meditation for me to watch and to copy. Going to bring out my small pieces of paper and have a Helen fest of studies. The nerd in me went down the rabbit hole and found your answers for the berries and parts… the balls are called druplets and are a result of each one being from a bunch of tiny flower parts( male and female) that makes up what we see as one pretty flower, and those parts being fertilized. The aggregate ( bunch of fertilized flowers) come together and forms the bunch of druplets we see as a raspberry or blackberry etc. the wispy bits are the dried remains of the stamens ( male part of the flower). Science geek… artist who loves plants and animals… and answers. Check. Thanks for these videos!!

Thank you for such a wonderful tutorial Rae. As usual, I watched it all the way through once first, then again while working on my piece. I always struggle with the middle place, and pushing forward to add more layers of darker pigment to accentuate the highlights. Further, I am really working hard to navigate the pushing of the paint to blend it in and alleviate the hard lines (and not add too much water in doing so). This tutorial is soooo incredibly helpful and you do an amazing job at sharing / narrating every step of the way. Thank you.

Thank you. You’ll do a great job and I can’t wait to see it. Make sure that your paint is totally dry before you do the water glaze and use a vey light touch 😘
Very well taught. Thank you for sharing your talent.

Absolutely amazing! I don't take watercolor quite so seriously as to decide not to use white, but I've always admired those who do. I think it would be an interesting challenge. Keep up the great work!

As always, a great video. I was wondering if you can do a video on painting the thin white highlights that sit on top of flower petals. Those are hard for me. Also can you do a video on your favorite mixes . Love the indigo and burnt umber and phalo and naples!

Thank you and thank for the suggestions xx. BTW I agree. The mixes you mention are gorgeous
Funny, after listen for a second time at your video ,I heard you say something what made my problem…Use more water on cold pressed…that is it. That’s why my painting was darker. It did not blend that good. So I went over it again with a layer, then it became to dark…next time I will make note while I am watching your video 😉

@@helencampbell these tips are soooo importent for beginners for watercolor. Normally I make things with color pencil and pastels, it just works the other way around, and I knew that too, but I didn't know the tip to use more water with cold pressed. But now I also understand someone else from another video, who wets his cold pressed paper twice with wet in wet. 😉
Question, the second layer was a mix of a thicker mix of indigo, is this with or without the ultra marine ?
@helencampbell

I think it was without but because it’s thicker it’s ok either way in this instance

I started with this blackberry and have come a long way. again I went too dark. it looks realistic but doesn't have the watercolor effect. I am watching your video again and I'm going to try to make the blackberry for a second time. I will post both blackberries to your Facebook when they are finished (this weekend I hope)

I’m pretty sure you’re painting a Blackberry.
The word you are looking for is achene. Oxford definition: a·chene /āˈkēn/ nounBOTANY a small, dry one-seeded fruit that does not open to release the seed. Love this painting and hope to try it very soon thanks to your excellent instructions.

Achenes are dry fruits, like the shell of a sunflower seed or what you see on strawberries. These are drupelets.

That stem is too pastel. I grow all sorts of berries and take many pictures. This needs more washes. My college art professor forbid 2 things in watercolor: white paint and small detail brushes at beginning of painting. He'd watch you can't use them until last 3 minutes of painting. He'd repeat you need to use lightest washes first all over using a large brush, move to middle range with slightly smaller than first brush. Then darker with a finer brush. Using the very small brush you did takes more time, more scrubbing, more stippling, more blending and more lifting. You also started dark and go lighter like an oil painter. So interesting to see all this hard work. You make it work. Proves paper and technique and brushes all working hard. Love results.
