WORKING WITH MIXED MEDIA PAPER AND WHY I LOVE IT

In this full length, easy wild rose tutorial I will show you how to paint a wild rose in watercolour. I have chosen to work on mixed media paper and I'll explain why I love it, how I accidentally overworked it, and how I solved this watercolour problem. I provide you with a free trace down drawing and reference photograph, so that you can paint along with me. I want to make art accessible to everyone so I have simplified the process - botanical art the easy way! We will cover wet on dry watercolour application as well as wet in wet, colour glazing and all things watercolour.
Hi - I'm Helen Campbell (also known as Rae) and I am a professional botanical artist and illustrator - every week I bring you brand new tutorials right here on my KZread channel. You will often hear me say 'use what you have' - because I do not think you need go out and buy every colour that I use - so 'use whatever you have' :)
The colours I used today are:
cool pink, green yellow, olive green yellow, sap, deep phthalo green and french grey
Paper: Mixed media
Brushes all from Rosemary and co: Link below
This is how I made my colour chart and how I use it:

I discovered your You Tube channel recently. I love your comments about paper. I have found as a beginner that the less expensive paper is easier to work with. Thanks for looking into this.

Beautiful. I have never worked on mixed media paper. I may give it a try, as I believe one of my sketchbooks is for mixed media.

Thank you. I discovered it quite by accident but when I painted on it with watercolour I really, really liked it. In a few weeks time I’ll be doing a watercolour comparison video where I test mixed media paper coldpressed and hot press paper and compare the three. You may want to keep an eye out for that because it’s really, hopefully, useful LOL

Great work, as always. Watercolour paper I use for botanical painting is Arches 300 gsm HP. I have also some mix media paper from Canson, Imagine 200 gsm, silky surface, natural white. I did not try it yet, but I have plans to do it. I wonder what your mixed media paper is (wich one did you use in this video). Thank you for beautiful videos and beutiful paintings.

Beautiful painting, your tutorials are easy to follow. I do have a question how do you keep your paper wet in the extreme heat, I was suggested a medium you add but this hasn't helped much, any suggestions?

  • @helencampbell

Thank you. No I don’t do anything different in extreme heat. I just add more to my palette because it dries very fast but as for the paper, I just work as usual

Helen, I would like to purchase the spotter brushes from Rosemary & co. I looked online using your link. The color of the hair on the brushes is very light in color and does not look like the ones that you are using. Please let me know if your brushes have black hair or if is it a monitor color difference. Thank you for your help.
