How-To: Make Vegan Curry with Alex Olson
Ойын-сауық
Pro skater Alex Olson went vegetarian after an unfortunate incident with a lizard at the age of thirteen, and now he's in the MUNCHIES Test Kitchen to show us how to make a vegan Indian curry. This coconut milk-based curry is spicy, delicious, and filling, even without meat.

I mean, he did a pretty amazing job here. After all, it's amazing that he somehow comes off as less professional than a guy who sang though half the recipe, and more tired out from cooking 1 dish than the guy who prepped a better curry with 2 sides and a shake.

Tomato paste (if used) and the spices must be added to a mix of onion, ginger, garlic and chilies to fry in a moderate amount of oil before adding anything else! That is the base for every Indian curry.

Don't forget the bay leaves, curry leaves, star anise, mustard seed, and other spices most Indians use to really pump up the complexity and aromatic nature of the base!

Yes, this whole recipe make me cringe. Adding all the masalas after the coconut milk make me wince a bit 😂😂😂
Idk why people hate on Alex he's clearly just nervous in front of a camera, dope recipe and I've been trying to get myself to go vegan for years so shit like this is a good kick in the pants

Nah man, I like vegan food and this is a shit recipe. You need all the flavors to cook and sear more in a dry pan (with oil, not water-based shit like coconut). Brown the spices, the onions, the tomato paste so they get seared and tasty before you add the liquid.

You need to fry the spices in oil before anything else, then add onion, garlic and tomato paste. That first step is called "massala" or "chauncing" :) basic indian cooking
why all the dislikes? just because the recipe is vegan? i think the curry looks great and the dude is pretty chill as well

Compared to the last curry episode, the curry itself looks less well executed, and the presentation seemed a lot less professional. And considering that both are vegan curries executed by amateur chefs, it seems reasonable to compare them.

I used to be in love with Alex Olson back in the day lol So happy to find a recent video with him 😊
Alex Olson, a jack of all trades haha
"no you have any tricks for cutting onions?" *thinking* "no."
I like how relaxed this is
definitely one of the best skaters ever born. im so glad hes health concious
I clicked with the expectation that the dislike and bitching will be a lot on this one, simply because of the title. You realize some people are vegans and would like to see recipes online as well.. They are just offering recipes for all diets. Get over yourselves.

He isn't a chef, we should probably know that, its how he does it. The series isn't a how to from a chef, they are featuring a bunch of reg folks and the meals they cook. The comment is under this vid, but there have been a series of vegan recipes on this channel that gets a lot of hate. Point taken however. NB. No 'recipe' can be done wrong if it isn't a traditional recipe, that's the beauty of cooking, if in the end it tastes good, and is good.. then its a win. We humans love the boxes we make ourselves slaves to.

People aren't disliking this because it's vegan.
one of the best skaters and unique styles hands down
Love this, great guy to listen to.
I love Alex Olson, awesome meal man. great video dude
Looks good but I also add to mine: diced carrots red lentils chick peas Also I used to cook it like this, adding the spices after the liquid and only recently started actually frying the spices in oil before adding the liquid and holy shit it makes a huge huge difference in flavour. You can save money and use way less of the spices if you just fry them first!
instant like for Alex, wish I could like twice for the dish!
alex olson vs the people man hahaha, keep inviting pro's munchies great job bianca!
I made the curry and the sauce tasted phenomenal! I ended up using the sauce to pour over rice with baked kobocha! I’m saving the rest of the curry with potatoes for tomorrow;) Any other recipes you have that you want to share?
Some time ago i lost a bet to a vegan friend of mine, and had to be vegan for at least two months. I am now 8 weeks in and im starting to regret it less by the day. Im not doing it because i care for the animals or some noble stuff like that, i just think/feel that it is alot more healthy. I don't know what makes omnivores and vegans hate each others so much, after all it's just a dietary choice.

Rossen Bossen I think people see it as a threat if their way of living is challenged, and it causes them to react negatively, or even aggressively.

I have no negative feelings towards vegetarians and vegans. I love asian food, i'm gonna eat it every now and then. MY problem is with the people that CLAIM to be one. Pompous and arrogant. They tend to think they're "better" than people that eat meat. That is what i don't like.
@lasa4965
7 жыл бұрын
killercaos123 and here we have your typical "relatable guy" that wants some thumbs up. and yes, we kind of better in the sense that we leave animals alone and dont intentionally contribute to their sufferings. whereas meateaters know what theyre doing is wrong but keep going on with it, even knowing that it isnt good for their physiology and the animals wellbeings, those people are assholes.
Dry sarcasm love it
Just made this...Hate all you want its Amazing! 3 years of not eating meat or consuming dairy or eggs and I feel so much better!
''That doesnt even look cool.'' I kinda love how he was real and kinda awkward because you know thats how youd act haha its sweet and ties you back to the fact that hes just a normal human too
That guy was awesome. More of him!

Totally making this recipe
Dude!!! Can’t wAit to try this! Looks yummy
lol i met this dude at a demo, he really is that socially awkward, we just smiled at each other and all i did was show him the 917 tee i was wearing, i was pretty starstruck. he's a huge inspiration of mine
HELL YEAH ALEX! So sick haha! One of the all time greatest skaters too
Great curry. Where can I see more details related to ingredients and measures
Pizza SHOW!
very many times did i think wow looks good to taste!
When he took a bite said hmm and mad that weird face. I almost died lol
I just made this I roasted the spices first with onion I did everything… but I did the spices first then when the potatoes and onion and garlic looked to my liking I then added the coconut milk and cilantro but I added chili powder and it put everything together for me I also added ginger when I was frying the spices but delicious 😋
Yay you listened !!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ thanks munchies
Not a fan of the food, but a big fan of his skating
He did great! Did not act like he was a chef. Dooope video & I will try to use the recipe he has!! :)
I love curry! That looks delicious!
This dude is so endearing, I don't even like curry but I watched
I love the "This does not taste good" part and he adds what he thinks will make it more delicious. Very honest :)
im so making this tomorrow hell yes. almost just want it for a midnight snack. mmm
Looks good but what source of protein would you have?
really liked this video!
A little orange or tangerine zest in there and a bit of peanut butter maybe a bit of nutmeg and clove rocks too
I cook something similar with lentils. Simple and not too many ingredients, that's how I like it.
the way he skated to beastie boys in Pretty Sweet makes up for this 100x over lol
He's great I totally enjoyed this I think he has a cool presence
love the casual Rachael Ray roast as an intro
Seems like a simple recipe most of us can pull off at home, which is a good thing.
bro why the hate this guy is just chilling doing his thing
I can relate to the story about the lizard so much. When I was a kid a crushed a baby birds egg and I felt so guilty about it. I became a pescetarian years later. I wonder how much that had to do with it
you can't put this vidéo after the roots curry one
He’s the tv chef we need and I’m an omnivore
it would be nice if you had the macros on as well
Wow this looks amazing!!!
I love Alex Olson
so sweet
Put cilantro On Ugh that doesn’t even make it look Good He’s so honest about his own food It’s admirable
V nice!! also appreciate when a cook isn't afraid to criticize their food lol "..this does not taste good"
He makes a Rachel Ray expression at the end.
Looks good!
That guys is too adorable
holy shit as a long time fan of his skateboarding, this is really, really dope
HAVE to make this mmmm
The spices & tomato paste are best when added to the oil first. The flavors will bloom and you won't need the extra salt & peppers;)
This guy is pretty cool...weird but cool haha

Yay for alex
ehm.... fry the tomato paste and spices first... better flavour....
This felt so authentic. i loved it.
So sweet guy .
Nice one!
you should add your spices before adding your liquid also add fresh ginger
one of my favorite skaters cooking some good ass food I fucks with the visionn!!!!
YES!!!!!!
Would eat the fuck out of that curry. I like how honest this guy is aye, so many people on Munchies act like they're putting on a persona or trying to be such a big personality this is nice
lmaoo this guy is so funny
Looks dank af!!!
Which one of you Hollywood elites forced him to cook ? My mans looks hungover af
This recipe is great ! I am not vegan , but it was so yummy ! 8/10!
HE SHOT A LIZARD WHAT I'm literally dead looool 😤
I dig how self-deprecating he is. "That doesn't even look that cool." :D
sick skater, cool that he's on this making a vegan dish
love u alex. u keep doing u boo. most honest cooking ive seen in a long time.
Alex Olson is awesome.
Yum Yum!
That's BEAST alex BEAST!
alex olson is da bomb
nice
what a legend
I would have add the spices after the onions then the tomatoe paste. The coconut milk I would add at the end because it becomes oil when cooked for too long....but that s just me!
Alex is a beast on a board and dudes funny as fuck
good
