Watch how to make a 5-star enchilada sauce that tastes authentic but is super quick-and-easy to prepare. You'll start by browning a little flour in a skillet. That's the key to the terrific taste and texture of this sauce. Then traditional Mexican spices give it just the right depth and spiciness.

What I like about this recipe is all the ingredients are in my kitchen already, don't have to run out to get anything. Just what I was looking for. Thank you for the post.

It really does smell so amazing
My Mom and I prepared some great enchiladas and added this great sauce! Everyone enjoyed this dinner and could not stop saying how great they tasted. Thank you so much for sharing your tasty enchilada sauce. Thumbs up 😃
this is just how my Mexican mother and grandmother made enchilada sauce except they used chicken broth instead of water. I'm not able to ask them how to do it, so I searched for a video that would be like their method. I've looked thru a few videos and yours is just how they did it. I remembered as I watched... I couldn't remember when the flour came into the process but this video helped me remember. THX!
That's a wonderful suggestion! Thank you for sharing.
I tried this recipe for my enchiladas and they came out awesome. Thanks for the recipe.
Been looking for some good Tex-Mex sauce and Ima give this one a go. Do yourself a favor and fry the corn tortillas in oil for 30 seconds before you make your enchiladas. It adds a ton of flavor and that’s how most restaurants do it.

I’ve been looking for a text-mex sauce too. I’m going to try this right now. How many enchiladas came out on this recipe?
This is such a great recipe. Simple easy and fast which yields perfect taste. The sauce turned out to be So so so so good
I was looking for an old school restaurant style flavor and this is a great Tex-Mex sauce! I added a teaspoon of low sodium Knorr bullion powder and half a pkg of Sazón coriander annatto for just a little kick! Thank you!❤️👍🏽
Great question. The only difference between self rising and regular flour is the addition of baking powder and salt. Many Allrecipes member used all purpose flour in this recipe with great success. Be sure to season with salt to taste. Enjoy!

I was wondering the exact same thing. The Baking Powder is heat-activated and creates carbon dioxide, which creates the lift when you bake. In this recipe, the flour is made into a roux and the heat will negate the benefit of the baking powder.
Thank you for your question, Brett. Cumin powder is made from grinding up cumin seeds. This spices is often used in Mexican cooking.
Omg finally a recipe similar to my grandmas! My grandma never measured anything so it’s nice to have measurements.... I’m not on that level yet 😉

Muchas gracias 😃 por la receta 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 deliciosa salsa de enchilada👏👏👏 excelente 🌹🌹🌹
This recipe is so easy and I love the orange sauce you see in authentic Mexican restaurants. It make must be the white flour and oil that lightens up the red chili powder. Yum.

Good basic recipe. Try these variations: Use chicken broth instead of water. Or, use beer instead of water. Bump up the garlic to one generous tablespoon. Use tomato sauce with minced jalapeno peppers already in it. Add a teaspoon of brown sugar to the sauce. Combine any of these variations - and enjoy! I hope this helps.

I just used it and my enchiladas were outstanding! It's a great recipe and easy to make. There may be better recipes for this sauce, somewhere, but I haven't found any, and it beats anything you can buy in a can.

Q!
Thank you thank you! We don't have it where I'm from, so the recipe for this sauce is much appreciated. Btw, you have a very beautiful and gentle speaking voice. Thanks again.
Just made this. In fact my enchiladas are in the oven right now. I used onion powder, because I didn't have onion salt and I used plain flour, instead of self rising. It's so good! I'll never buy the canned stuff again. It makes enough for a decent size pan, double the recipe if you want more than one pan. :)

So...u used regular flour?? I don't have self rising flour. Please reply. Thank u.🙂
Went to buy sauce at two no three stores, didnt have. On way home, I say Lord u want me to make it from scratch..got home looking for help. So glad He showed me this. God bless, TFS!
Good recipe, good to start with and add bits take away bits to suite yourself. Thanks
So basically I feel stupid buying these cans of sauce I will try this recipe 👍🏼
Thanks for this sauce recipe....Making this Friday for my Family :-)
Another suggestion after frying the tortilla for 30 seconds, set it inside the enchilada sauce and submerge it for about a minute, remove the tortilla with a spatula, set it in a baking dish, add your cheese or chicken or whatever you're using then roll using, maybe, a couple of forks. I'm gonna try your enchilada sauce with chilaquiles today. But instead of just plain water, I think I may add Knorr's chicken flavored bouillon, 1 tsp per cup of water. When sauce is done, taste before adding any salt. Happy cooking!
You can also enhance flavor by stirring in some chicken stock, or beef stock. Appreciate the ease of this recipe.
That to me is a perfect enchilada sauce. Thank you.
thank you so much for this :) i needed a easy recipe for tomorrow, this is perfect. looks great and i hope we will love it :) easy, and we know everything thats in the sauce;) in Norway i cant buy enchilada sauce on can anyway we only have powders :P strange i know.
Am going to try tonight. Assessment will be tomorrow.
that was easy and good thank you
Perfect! Exactly what I was looking for. :)
Let's take this for what it is, this is a tex-mex recipe, sometimes I like enchiladas verdes or rojas(authentic), sometimes I like these. I like to change up and even make Indian Mexican. 😊 Nothing wrong with variety.

So you think Tex-Mex / Cal-Mex food is inauthentic?
Oh my god that chili powder roux made my whole house smell mouthwatering. Actually I think I'll never buy the sauce again, this was so good. I used a 15 oz can of tomato sauce, some bouillon, paprika, pepper, the chili powder and flour roux and some chef merito carne asada seasoning. It made a whole lot, too.
thank you great sauce
Juss used this recipe and my enchiladas came out good
Still my go to everytime!
thanks. Gonna make this in school.
I try recipe they awesome
Thank you so much!!!
Hope this sauce wo rks well with me tonite!

why self-rising flour?

Chimayo chili powder seems to have the most consistent flavor that i have found
Yesss
Dip the corn tortillas in hot oil to soften them up a little and than dip them in the sauce before rolling them works good every time.
This saved dinner!
Happy to make you look cool on the internet :)
I use Chimayo chili powder. And use chicken, beef or vegetable stock. I’ll be making this tonight.
do know know of any good mecixan cooking shows on youtube? either in english or with subtitles. i love mexican food and want to get beter at cooking it! thanks
It's amazing what 2 tsp of sugar does to this recipe.
Thanks 👌
Ingredients: ¼ cup vegetable oil ¼ cup New Mexico or California chili powder 2 tablespoons self-rising flour 1 ½ cups water 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce ¼ teaspoon ground cumin ¼ teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon onion salt salt to taste Directions: Step 1 Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in chili powder and flour, reduce heat to medium, and cook until fragrant and deepened in color, stirring constantly to prevent the flour from burning, about 1 minute. Step 2 Gradually stir in water, tomato sauce, cumin, garlic powder, and onion salt until smooth. Continue cooking over medium heat until thickened slightly, about 10 minutes. Season with salt.
Okay, thanks!
This is the way i was taught growing up in the kitchen except we would use chicken boullion in the water. onion powder then add some sharp cheddar into the sauce until fully melted.
Try frying the tortilla, they'll taste much better!

Do you have to use self rising flour??
Mole poblano is sweet!
so first you make a roux but chilli powder added, once cooked down thin with water and add yummy spices. Why have I been buying enchilada sauce?

how much does the recipe make?
Missing what temp you bake them on
Sounds delicious! And I agree, there is a huge difference when using New Mexico chili powder. Have you ever used browned flour? It gives the sauce a wonderful nutty flavor.
The recipe will not pull up anymore, but here is what I got from watching the video.. 1/4 cup oil 2 tbsp self rising flour 1/4 cup chili powder 8oz can tomato sauce 1.5 cups water 1/4 tsp cumin powder 1/4 tsp garlic powder 1/4 tsp onion salt

Do not add the water if you want a really strong flavor. The first time I made this, I forgot the water and the taste was AMAZING. I added water in the second time, and it was good but not to the same degree. Experiment and see which one you like better
Can you use all purpose flour rather than self rising flour?
I added a can of el pato sauce, great taste
💜
It taste similar to el pato sauce This Tex-Mex overall great
GG I ain’t got no flour any alternatives
My mom makes sauce like this, only she adds fresh sliced garlic to the pan with the oil and lightly frys it.

Yes, regular flour is OK to use, Deborah Corona. You may need to add more salt, but you'll know how much when you taste the sauce. Here's the link to the original recipe if you wish to check ingredients: allrecipes.com/recipe/ten-minute-enchilada-sauce/detail.aspx
Why would you use self raising flour over plain
Can I do an arrow root slurry instead of flour
@allrecipes
8 жыл бұрын
Are you looking for a gluten-free flour alternative, Crystal L? If yes, use arrowroot flour mixed with rice flour as a wheat flour substitute. Arrowroot is primarily used as a thickener, so it needs to be mixed with something to substitute for flour.
why self rising flour?
How about mix the powders before dumping it into the oil!!
Ya cago el palo con la salsa de tomate!
This makes such little sauce i had to double the recipe like who only make 3 enchiladas??
What is cumin powder?
Thank you for your recipe, I will never buy a can of sauce again.
The New Mexican in me is screaming right, where are the dry whole chilis.
I add enchilada sauce to beans and rice , I had no idea that it was mostly chili powder
