How to Make Momma's Homemade Biscuits

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Ever wonder how to make homemade southern biscuits? These are the best southern biscuits in the world! Light and flaky!
This is a video of my momma making homemade biscuits the same way she was taught by her own momma.
Made from only four ingredients:
Self-Rising Flour, Shortening, Buttermilk, & Water.
Note: We used a powdered buttermilk mix, but real buttermilk can also be used.
The oven was heated to 500 degrees before starting. The biscuits are baked for about 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
These biscuits are great with honey, jelly, gravy, or just butter. Have them for breakfast, lunch, or supper. Now you can make homemade southern biscuits yourself.

Thank you all for your kind comments on my Mommas cooking. We lost her this spring to lung cancer. I have not been able to watch this since losing her but know someday I will. I miss her everyday & am thankful we shared a love of cooking & family.

My Mother had 9 children, we lived on a farm and we all had jobs to do. My mother never had a public job. I can never remember a day she was not waiting for us when we got off the school bus so I cannot relate to kids that their mothers work. When she went to town on Saturdays she would either buy a 25 or 50 pound of flour in a sack cloth and pour it in a barrel and I cant remember if it lasted a week or 2 weeks. She made a long pan of biscuits up 2 times a day 7 days a week. She made the dough up in a long wooden troff that belonged to my grandmother who had 15 children. I now have that troff with all the nicks in it but trust me I have only 1 child. I am now 68 and my daughter is 40. Watching this video brought back so many memories. This is exactly how she made them and worked them up but she used lard and bought it in 5 gallon buckets. When us girls needed a new dress for school or something she would pull out those washed and ironed sack cloth bags and make us a dress for they had some pretty prints. I am sure a lot of you remember them. We were proud to wear them, they were so pretty. biscuits were so good. If any were left and got cold we would poke our finger in it and make a hole and pour molasses in it or on Sundays put cold collars between them. I wish she was still living I would have had her make some using this troff. Please every one take the time to learn to make biscuits like this you will not regret it. practice makes perfect. Thanks for a super video and God bless you.

I remember Momma telling me stories of her Mom making them dresses out of flour sacks too. Growing up, we had grandmas biscuits in the morning hot with fresh honey & hand churned butter. The ones that were left were always on the stove & as we played as kids and got hungry, we were always grabbing one while running through the kitchen. Such awesome memories. Thanks for sharing......God Bless you as well ;)

My sisters and I proudly wore the pretty flour sack dresses. Mama didn't have a pattern so she would take an old news paper and cut out the neck and arm holes. It fit everytime. I read just the other day that when flour company found out we were making shirts and dresses out of the sacks, they started making them with pretty prints. I thought that was really cool. I miss my mama to. Gone for 39 years this month.( June 17 2019).♥️

This is so awesome. I am so glad you posted this. I was married as a young girl and lived in Panama City Florida. I was a very young bride. My husband was a southerner and he taught me to make biscuits the southern way. He has passed away some years ago and I am back in the north. I never again had anyone show me how to make them like that and I had forgotten. It was so nice to find your video. God bless and thank you so much for this video. Made them tonight and yes they are the best biscuits in the world.

Your mom is awesome in my book. Such a sweet, unassuming tone to her voice. Reminds me of those who have passed in my own life. My grandparents were all gone by the time I was 7 and 9. I never really got to know them, but will some day. I love this recipe because it comes from years of experience. If only there were more in their 60's and 70's on KZread passing on cooking skills instead of mostly 20's and 30's. :) I am sorry for your loss. By the way, the reason to give them the 'love tap' is that it helps the entire surface and volume of the biscuit rise evenly.

Oh my goodness! A joy of beauty and a sight to behold. When we lose someone we dearly loved it brings us tears, followed by a smile, then a feeling of how blessed we were to be part of each other’s lives. I loved the video and the joy and laughs y’all had, so touching. Yes, I am going to make those biscuits... just like your mom did, it will be a rewarding experience to fill like I am part of your family. My Mom passed way in 2013 (77), she was a great cook too, and my Granny died in 1992 (82). I think of each one of them every single day. All the years I visited my Granny and spent the night with her, she would make the white Gravy and keep it warm on the stove and when she heard me get up she would start making the eggs... gravy, biscuits and/or bread, when I walked in the kitchen it was “ready” to eat. My mom, had a good teacher. Have fortunate I was to have both of them in my life as well as my Dad. I miss them all so much. So, I understand exactly how you feel about the loss your Mom and Grandmother, with time, the pain eases, and the flashbacks of joyful times will help in your healing. My blessings to all of you and thank you so much for sharing this video too... so beautiful... my prayers 🙏 go out to all of you. May you and other loved ones be blessed today and always! 😊 💫

Oh my❤️ like watching my mama. And my mama was even on O2 her last 13 years. And mama never measured. She could just tell by feel. Which sadly is hard to teach someone the feel. I was the youngest of 7 children. My sister was the oldest. An me the baby with 5 boys in-between... Mama always said by the time I came along she was tired if teaching she guessed. Because I didn't pick it all up like my older sister 22 years older than me... And now my mama and sister are both gone... But I'm sure watching lots of you tube trying to find the most like Mama's. I think this is pretty close... But I was thinking she may have rolled hers out. But I'm sure going to try this. Loved your mama. So much like mine❤️

I send sincere condolences of a loss for 'your' mother. I know the pain, the empty void -still- after these many years. My mom was so young. Then my dad died not too long after that. I will keep and make her OWN as I relish her loving hands, watching her as she goes so slowly as each viewer watches with EASE. I hope to see everything she has made. thank you so very much.

I told her I would see if I could find it on YT because Granny didn't show her daughters how to make them (Granny wanted to do all the cooking...and she was darn good at it). This wonderful recipe and the lady in the kitchen remind of my momma when she cooked. The only difference is my momma and her people in Eastern KY used a well seasoned cast iron skillet. I used to think 500 degrees would burn the biscuits but that never happened. My mother always told us the biggest thing you need was patience in making biscuits...it was not a five minute procedure. Terrific idea to film this and share with others. Thanks.

That is exactly how my Grandmother made her biscuits. The same pinch that you used. She never used the buttermilk and water but used whole milk. When she had a cow and was milking, she used fresh cows milk. The taste was the best I have ever ate. She made them about 5 mornings a week. She also made cornbread daily and pinto beans 3 times a week. In the 60's she and I shared a 16 ounce Pepsi Cols in the bottle while I watched her cook breakfast.

I’ve shared this video with my daughter and she uses it as a guide for when she wants to make biscuits. :) Much love!

Not only is this EXACTLY how my Mama and her's before her makes biscuits - I think Mama even has that same outfit LOL = and just like y'all we stand around waiting on them - butter at the ready -- so she always makes a SECOND pan for breakfast LOL excellent video - nostalgic - I called my Mom after watching this LOL

I made biscuits this morning that turned out pretty good, but I was still yearning to make biscuits like my grandmother made. I remember that she pinched hers out so I said let me go to KZread to see if there are any recipes there like hers. I ran across yours and it brought tears to my eyes. I also made a video of my grandmother making her biscuits, but it was years ago and I need to have it transferred to a format that we can watch it on today. It's sad that the later generations miss the closeness of family and the work ethic they had. I am definitely going to get that video transferred to a modern format and incorporate it into a genealogy powerpoint I'm creating. I'll also put in some recipes so the young ones will know how real food used to be made.

I know this was an educational video but it sure brought back a lot of wonderful childhood memories. Lost my mom 8 years ago and watching this sweet lady work the dough really made me smile. I have so many memories of my mom but her hands were what I seemed to have focused on so much. They were always purposeful and deliberate but gentle and graceful. Thanks for sharing this. And sorry didn't mean to get sidetracked there.

I learned from a friend in Mississippi years ago how to make biscuits. I made them for a long time and then quit for years. I tried to go back to making homemade and they would never come out right. Thanks to ya'll I know what I was doing wrong. Now my husband wants to learn how to make them. I showed him your video. He is excited to try it since he is not a baker and wants to bake. Thank you both!

I watched this video because it said Mama's biscuits . My mother made biscuits like this. She milked the cow and churned the milk and made butter. Also, used lard to make the biscuits, didn't know what Crisco was. She made the best biscuits and gravy. What can i say, this brought back memories
