How to Make Butter from Scratch at Home with a Mixer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Learn how to make butter with a mixer the easy way! It’s actually pretty simple to make your own homemade butter. All you need is some heavy cream and a mixer.
I've been making my own butter for years, just for fun. My kids and I started making it together with a Mason jar at first, and then we bought a small vintage butter churn, which everyone loves to use. When we want larger batches of butter, we use the mixer.

    Looks good. One quart of cream should make one pound of butter. Yum! Wonder how cost effective this recipe is compared to buying butter. I will try a butter from regular cream and one from raw cream. See which one works for me. It’s amazing people used to make butter from a churn. There are modern churn available that are non/electric from Lehman’s. Have not used one, but might try one in the future. Thank you for video.

    Glad it was helpful! I'm not sure about the cost effectiveness. My kids just think it's so much fun to make our own. We also have a Kilner butter churn (this one: amzn.to/2VTLUmx ) that we bought several years ago, and that's a fun thing for kids too!

    Hi I found your video really useful thank you how long does it keep once made into butter? I sometimes see cream on offer that's only got a day or so left on it can I use it to make butter and will it then last longer? Thank you

    So glad it was helpful! Homemade butter should keep in the refrigerator for at least a week or possibly two, potentially longer if all the buttermilk is successfully removed. I'm not sure about using almost-expired cream. It would turn into butter just fine, but I'm not sure if that would make it last longer. It could probably be frozen, but I'm not sure how it would taste after being frozen, since I haven't tried that before. If you try it, let me know how it turns out!

    Hello, I want to know that how long will this butter last if we put the butter in refrigerator? Is there any tips on which container should be used to store the butter like plastic box or clay bowl or glass bowl which one is the best?? Thanks

  • @ArtfulHomemaking

    @ArtfulHomemaking

    Homemade butter should last in the refrigerator for at least 7-10 days. Some people say they've kept theirs for longer (a week or two), but ours never lasts that long since we have a larger family. You can use any type of container to store it (glass jar with lid, glass or ceramic bowl with plastic wrap, or a plastic bowl with a lid) as long as you have a lid or cover to go over it. Hope that helps!

    So, do you keep that bowl of butter that you made in the video uncovered inside of your fridge or do you leave it out on the table? Thanks.

    I cover my bowl with plastic wrap (or transfer it to a different bowl with a lid) and store in the fridge. Or, you could also put it in a butter bell if you want to keep it at room temperature. Here's a butter bell example: amzn.to/33fKni8

    Thank you! So glad it was helpful! If you have whole milk that still contains the cream, you can skim the cream off the top and make butter with the cream. That's the best kind of homemade butter!

    I got a stand mixer for Christmas, but I haven't tried making butter with it yet. I just did a quick Google search, and I see that lots of people are making butter with a stand mixer! One article said it just took 5 minutes. So, yes, it can be done! I'll have to try that next time. :)

    My butter turned out perfectly with the exception of it not having the yellow color. I’ve noticed yours was yellow. Is that based upon the brand of the heavy whipping cream itself? I’ve watched other channels and it varies from yellow, off white or white. I personally like the yellow color.

    I'm so glad to hear it turned out well! Yes, the color of butter is usually determined by the diet the cows are fed (and sometimes the breed of cow), so the brand of cream could make a difference.

  • @ArtfulHomemaking

    @ArtfulHomemaking

    4 жыл бұрын

    I've never actually timed it (I should do that next time!) but it takes maybe 5-10 minutes of mixing depending on the strength and type of mixer. Ours is just a little one so it seems to take a bit longer to mix things. I've also read that the process happens faster if the cream is at room temperature.

    What's the shelf life and does it get too hard to spread after refrigerated like store bought?

  • @ArtfulHomemaking

    It lasts at least a week, maybe two. You can also form it into a "log," wrap it in waxed paper or plastic wrap, and put it in a freezer bag to freeze it for several months. After refrigeration, it firms up and has the same texture as regular store-bought butter.

    If you have fresh raw milk, you can skim the cream off the top of that and use it to make butter. We've done that lots of times when we had raw milk available (and it's so much better for you!). That's the only way I know of to get heavy whipping cream from scratch. There are substitutions for heavy cream that you can find with a Google search, but they all involve combining milk and butter.

  • @ArtfulHomemaking

    I apologize for not getting that part filmed. All you do is cover the butter in the bowl with a bit of cold water (I just take it over to the sink and run some water into the bowl.) Then mix it again with your mixer (or, you can skip using the mixer and instead just massage the butter with your hands or a rubber spatula.) Pour off the cloudy water, and add fresh water to the bowl. Mix again (or use your hands or a rubber spatula), and continue this until the water remains clear. Pour off/squeeze out any excess water. Hope that helps!
