So my dad and I actually followed your tutorial and made some awesome bismuth geodes!! We actually worked with a metal ladel instead of the ceramic bowls for the geodes, heating it up over the open flame of a grill we're gonna trash anyways. This way we didn't have to worry about the breaking ceramic! Thank you so much for giving us the idea to do this!! It's a project I won't forget anytime soon.

+TAOFLEDERMAUS It's like brittle lead. Flexible but brittle at the same time. It will probably arrive in a very brittle form but melting it again should make it a little more solid. Shouldn't shatter if dropped, it would get a pretty solid dent with some hairline cracks running through it.

Wow, Great video. Ive Spent a fair amount of time recently trying to make a video on doing this, never getting the results I wanted. I noticed you are using a LOT of bismuth, I only had 2 lbs.. That probably helped to grow larger crystals, because you had a deeper dish, and It would cool slower. I was surprised at how difficult it was to get a nice single crystal. That crust on top acts as a nucleation point, and its very annoying. When you scrape the oxide layer when its still hot, I got an awesome rainbow as it cools, did you get that too? Something you could try is adding the oxide to HCl, along with a small amount of H2O2 to dissolve it. Once its dissolved, take a drop and add it to another container of water. The Bismuth Chloride instantly hydrolyzes in the water to form bismuth oxychloride, and forms a really thick white precipitate. just pretty cool. Anyway i'm rambling now but, this is now the best bismuth video on youtube!

More bismuth definitely helps. To grow a single crystal I think the only way to go about it would be to create your own nucleation point by maybe submerging a pinhead or something similar below the surface. I might try the bismuth chloride trick you suggested, I haven't seen that one before.
