How to make a fresh wort beer kit - brewing, tasting and review

Ойын-сауық

This week we're giving one of the new fresh wort beer kits from The Malt Miller a try.
This legitimately took 12 minutes to put the kit together from start to pitching the yeast, it honestly could not have been easier. They are brewed by Gritchie and there are now a couple available to choose from. Link to buy is here....
www.themaltmiller.co.uk/produ...
They describe it as....
"Modern pale ale using Maris Otter, Crystal, Wheat and Oats with U.S. hops Ekuanot and Amarillo used in the whirlpool along with Saaz for some lingering spice
Fresh Wort Kits are an amazing way to produce commercial quality beer at home with basic equipment. No experience of home brewing is required, simply follow the instructional videos and share awesome beer with your friends and family.
Unlike traditional beer kits that are made from malt extract, our Fresh Wort Kits are dispensed directly from Gritchie’s brew house into bag in a box style packaging. This allows the fresh flavours the team at Gritchie magic into their wort are available for our customers to easily complete the brewing process at home. Simply pour the Fresh Wort Kit into a fermenter and add the yeast. Your beer will be ready to drink in approximately two weeks.
Fresh Wort Kits are exclusively made by Gritchie Brewing Company, located in Ashmore, Wiltshire. Their incredible range of cask, bottled and canned beers are created by their amazing head brewer Alix Blease and head of operations Kane Upton. The brewery is positioned in the middle of the Ashcombe Estate where the malting barley variety Maris Otter is grown. It is this very malted barley that is used to produce their beers, including our fresh wort kits. Keeping ingredients as local as possible, Gritchie Brewing Company also have their own bore hole allowing water for the brewing process is drawn. This gives their beers, and our fresh wort kits a terroir, hugely important to any beer drinker.
English Lore is a modern pale ale using Maris Otter, Crystal, wheat and oats to produce the wort. This gives a darker style pale ale with good, strong malt, bready flavours. The bittering is taken care of by modern U.S. hops Ekuanot and Amarillo which are also used for flavour and aroma in the whirlpool along with Saaz for some lingering spice. Ferment with the supplied English Ale Yeast, this will leave a clear beer that is perfect for bottle conditioning. The yeast is know for neutral flavours in a wide range of temperatures, perfect for brewers with little temperature control over their fermentation

Yeast: NBS Ale Yeast - Ferment at 15 - 20c

Have you made one of these? What did you think?

I did make one...I must admit, I was disappointed. I am not an inexperienced brewer (all grain) and I followed the instructions to the letter. Mine stalled at 1.016, I tried adjusting the temperatures then eventually pitched a second, re-hydrated yeast...nothing. I cold crashed and carbonated. The taste is sub par, if definitely requires a dry hop. My initial taste on the palette was malt which tailed off towards unfermented wort. This then led to a blank canvas - no lasting taste. I have played with cellar temps and carbonation volumes...nothing. Maybe I got a bad bag of wort, maybe I did something wrong...I don't think so. I won't be retrying it - nothing against The Malt Miller - the best supplier for me, but this product in it's current form is not for me. Cheers lads. Stewy.

Yeah this kit seems to be getting mixed reviews looking at the moments. Maybe this is the first step in this style and as they expand the range it may improve? Expensive kit to not get the results you wanted though.

Really interesting to see if they expand this range as a way of experimenting with a level up from extract kits 👍

Good review. I did wonder how these would turn out. Not for me though, it’s the brewing equivalent of a microwave meal.

Ha I do know what you mean but it has some purpose. it’s been made by the brewery with their water profile. it’s as close as you’ll get without them bottling it I guess.

Thanks for the review, enjoyed it and I'm definitely interested in the product. For me - Either price point its cheaper than getting a keg filled at my local brewery. I've used them when I need a keg quick (as in time to brew) and felt fleeced!

Id 100% give it a go if you’re interested. All I’d say is stick to what is suppose to be… if it’s an English Ale stick to any additions that meet that style.

spectrum was mega Rick! saving 3 pints of beer for a couple of pounds! boom. I’m keeping my eyes open for a wheat as it’ll save the decotion mash.

yeah we just went with the yeast The Malt Miller recommended on their vid as we weren’t sure. probs doing it around a classic British bitter would of been better. well you’ll have to double up and spend over £100 for free delivery ha. Thanks, we do try to be honest as can be.

Great concept, straight from the brewery. Heavy price, doesn't look very good and the head is none existent. If you do AG you can get brilliant recipe kits for half the price

£67.25 for all that ingredients. That’s just a big nope for something that was just ok.
