In this episode of The Charged Life, high performance coach and #1 New York Times bestselling self-help author Brendon Burchard shares simple ways to learn FASTER.
This is Brendon speaking freestyle, recorded in one take without prompter or notes. Post your comments and questions for him below, and he might do an episode answering your question freestyle.
--------------------
SUMMARY:
--------------------
1. You have to know what you want of your life before you become a master learner. If you don’t know what your goals are or dream life should look like, you don’t know WHAT to learn and, worse, you won’t be COMMITTED to truly learning it. Advanced learning requires clear focus and a definitive WHY for learning - without these you won’t stay disciplined enough to learn anything with real depth.
2. Avoid starting from scratch. With no model to begin from - no example or strategy you are following - you’re reinventing the wheel and doomed to waste time. So, what proven framework, person, strategy, or step-by-step instruction are you following in order to learn this new area?
3. Make a PRACTICE of mastering skillsets. A practice is a recurring habit or routine that deepens your skill in any given area. The important thing here is to make a daily practice of anything you truly want to learn. Without daily exposure and immersion in the area you are trying to learn you will never achieve mastery. Learning must be an everyday discipline.
4. Get feedback. As you begin something new, all leaps forward, all major advancement, rests on getting immediate feedback and direction. Learning is a social process, so ask other people for suggestions and direction as you move forward so you can adjust your approach. Don't listen to the haters, but never forget their can be valuable feedback from others even if you don't like how they delivered it.
5. Have a deadline. Without a timeline for developing your competencies, you’ll never act or you’ll fall off track. No deadline means guaranteed distraction. So, WHEN do you need to learn this new topic or reach the next level of skill? What’s the consequence if you don’t learn it by then? Knowing the answer to these two questions will accelerate your learning.

Total immersion is the fastest way to learn. If you want to learn French, go live there. And if that is not practical, fall in love with a French person and spend a ton of time with them just speaking French! That's the way to model. I've been teaching Accelerated Learning since 1982 and I LOVE this stuff.

Brenden, could you do a video on how to over come loneliness when you are learning something? You definitely have experience on this, when you are learning something that is new to you, extremely tough, you could get lost sometime because there is not going be a person who stand besides to give you feedback or tell you to keep going. Especially, when you are in a different culture, I think that loneliness can be destructive to a person's will. it would be great if you can share you experience so that we can all learn from you! thanks

+Tina Grimes The feeling you have or developed I understand it very well, because I started in learning IT at a young age in my country (Central america - Honduras), and here are two advices that worked for me, 1) Get friends online, like, in forums or groups in FB. I used to do it when learning, and I still have some of them in my Skype and FB 2)Explain some of your closest friends, what you're doing, and what is your aim, so they can relate to you, even if they don't understand, they will support you. My country is very poor and not so-well-developed, I know what I'm talking about. Bonus) If you really love what you're aiming for, learn and imagine scenarios where you can use the knowledge your gaining. There's nothing more exquisite and uplifting, that the Imagination used properly. Try to see yourself and the ones you love, in the future where you have attained your goals succesfully. Like leogen seeds says, it is nothing but fear, fear of not getting the reward or acknowledgement out from your effort, it's different to the fear of failing. Let it be peace in your mind and heart. :)

Really getting excited about what life has to offer. It's so much better to have goals and aspirations than to be nihilistic and miserable.

I just subscribed to you after finding your videos last night. The reason why I subscribed to you is that you put in less filler than most self-help "gurus" before you get to the process or meat of the conversation. But what's more important is that you put in a outline of the points you are going to talk about in the video, something I've never seen by the "gurus." Thanks for sharing! :)

+2013danrazor write down what you do know about yourself... all the things you know. So what things do you like, what things can you do, what places would,d you like to visit? What kind of lifestyle do you envision having in 5 years? 10? Write down the foods you like, colours, etc... write down all the things you like about yourself. Write down all the traits you know you have, good or bad but focus on the good ones. If you can write all that down... it will give you a starting point and a pretty good idea of who you are right now. After all, we can't decide for sure how to get to where we want to go if we don't know where we are right now.

I kept skipping jobs and trying to figure out what i want to do. last night woke up with an anxiety because i am wasting my days not knowing what i want to do. After listening your video. I want to get in to engineering but that entails returning to school. I always tell myself i am too old to go back also i am still paying my student loans. I know i am just rambling but any advice how to focus and stick with something. I do admit once something gets hard i quit and lose motivation. then start complaining. Any advice how i can start a fresh new page?

+sophia avshalom, I think that answer has to come from within. Maybe you can start by writing down on a piece of paper the things that are the most important to you. Maybe those are goals you have, or it could be an idea that really resonates with you. Ask yourself what kind of person do I want to be and why? If you are content with where you are in life, then that's fine... But I'm guessing that you're not. Figure that out, and set goals around becoming that person. Hope that helps!
