How to Kayak and Snorkel to the Captain Cook Monument on Hawaii (Big Island) | Kealakekua Bay
Looking for the best snorkel experience on the Big Island (Island of Hawaii)? We rented kayaks to have an adventure across Kealakekua Bay. Dolphin spotting, crystal clear water, and perhaps the best snorkeling on the Big Island.
The best way to reach the Captain Cook Monument and one of the most pristine reefs on the island is to kayak. The vibrant reef awaits after a 20-minute paddle across the historic Kealakekua Bay.

We went there in November, it was even better than in my dreams 💞 we even saw dolphins! My son was sick on the boat going there but quickly recovered and went swimming using a board with a little window in it, he was thrilled. Watching your lovely video brings back beautiful memories ❤

I read on TripAdvisor that they are no longer offering the self-guided kayak tours, just the guided tours. Can you confirm and update your video? TY! :)

Aloha! Thanks for the Kayak rental suggestion. Heading out to the Big Island next week and we were wondering where we should rent kayaks from.
Thank you for this video. Currently planning our trip that is in two weeks & debating if I wanted to come here & do the hike (being lazy). LOL I didn't know there were other options to be able to snorkel at this spot until your video popped up on my news feed. Thank you for this & love your videos very useful/helpful! [=

Have a great trip! Enjoy snorkeling at Captain Cook and thanks for watching!
Hi, was your son able to snorkel with you guys once you reached the destination?
Thank you so much for all the amazing information! Do you know if it´s easy to get and Uber on our way back?
@TheHawaiiVacationGuide
2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure as it is a ways south of Kailua-Kona. If Uber isn't available, I'm sure a taxi will.
Thank you for the video and information. How easy or hard was it to get back into the kayak after snorkeling?
@TheHawaiiVacationGuide

Throw a leg up and roll on. It doesn’t have to be graceful or hard!
How often is the weather suitable for kayaking? My wife and I are wanting to do this at the end of March. Would it be to choppy?
@TheHawaiiVacationGuide
Жыл бұрын
it is good for kayaking most of the time. March is the end of the rainy season so you may have to see what day is best to go during your trip.
Hi there! What do you do with your kayak while you snorkel?

Take turns snorkeling is what we did.
Beautiful video. Thanks! I would love to learn details on why the regular sunscreen is damaging to fish. Perhaps interview a reef life expert to explain in detail? I am not sure how many people will take action on your advice unless they really understand the direct impact. Your snorkeling video showing the tiny fish eating off the rocks helps visualize the problem.
What was ur video setup underwater? I used a gopro and was not clear at all.

We use a GoPro HERO 8 set at 4k and 30fps. I'm no camera pro so can't provide more advice than that!

I always see kayaks in the water, but none up on shore. Can you "park" the kayaks on the shore?
@TheHawaiiVacationGuide
2 жыл бұрын
afraid not, a permit is required to go ashore. Some tour operators have a permit.

yes, it is an easy kayak trip. Try a guided tour if you are unsure. Links to our recommended guided tours are in the description.
