Excellent narration, video and overall presentation. Thank you for making this.

This video didn't mention that there are 3 kayak rental companies that allow you to land your kayak at Captain Cook Monument rather than tethering it nearby, but you go with a guide rather than on your own. The guides help you get out of the water, and provide you with food and drink, too. It's not a difficult kayak across Kealakekua Bay. Captain Cook Monument is one of the best spots to snorkel in Hawaii and worth the effort to go to. In Aug. 2019, we saw less water traffic than we did in 2011 when all kayaks were allowed to land at the monument, and less people as well so we didn't think boat traffic or people was an issue.

I did a charter boat tour here last summer went deep sea fishing and snorkeling right there at the same place saw such amazing fish AND saw the dolphins 🐬 as well 🥰 loved it!

Great info to know. Thanks man! I haven’t talked to my wife yet, but I’m thinking we might do the kayaking over rather than hike. We recently did the green sand beach and had a great day thanks to hiking boots, water, and sunscreen. All I can tell you about that, was to......hold on when taking a ride in back of the local pickup trucks😂🌈🤙

It's way mo betta to just drive down to the water and rent a sit on top there. He's right there at the parking lot. Nice concrete put in. There is plenty of good snorkeling between there and the monument and better chance chance of swimming with spinner dolphins. Don't believe the signs up on the highway that say they are the last place to rent a kayak. There is more to see driving on the road along the water south of there too.

Much easier to drive down napoopoo rd. And then rent a kayak… seriously it’s a hike, and it takes a while. A kayak is much more convenient.

Marisol, Capt. Cook/Napo'opo'o resident here. What he didn't mention is the Captain Cook Monument cove is very well protected from wind & waves year round. One reason it's so popular - because it is so reliable even when the rest of the coast is "blown out" & rough. However, please be respectful of local residents when parking at the upper trailhead. It is located on a blind curve in the road. Agricultural flatbed trucks carrying bees & ag produce like Mac Nuts etc. fly up & down this busy road all the time as well as me, other residents and many young local Hawaiians in 4x4's & tuner cars driving like Mad Max.There are two private driveways very close to the trailhead which tourists disrespect & partially block DAILY. Even disregarding no parking signs. It's so rude! AND I've seen groups literally standing in the middle of the road just lingering/talking - the insanity. We are delighted to have visitors come and enjoy Hawai'i Nei's resources & help our damaged economy. But too many people leave their brains at home. Unfortunately, thanks to Google & YT, the rural charm is being eroded thru disrespect & ignorance. Please share this with others. Spread the word. BTW, take plenty of water. Even in winter it can get pretty hot. The trail is exactly 2.2 miles. I know, I used to race it in my old Ironman days. An unsanctioned, unsupported (no aid stations/officials) biathlon starting at Keoua Canoe Club at Honaunau Bay. 3 mile run North to Kealakekua Bay, 1 mile swim (with shoes on) to monument at Ka'awaloa. Ending with the 2.2 mi. up to the finish at Napo'opo'o Rd. trailhead. We called it "Mana Man". Also "Aviator's" advice for entering to snorkel at the old rockwall is completely NOT advised. I'm a 40 year SAR/Divemaster/Waterman. It's just plain dumb to enter there -many people get cut up attempting it. Work your way beyond the monument behind the trees to the South West. There are plenty little inlets onto a protected 1m deep reef flat which is much less likely to get you scraped up on rocks or coral. Also this is EXACTLY the spot Capt. James Cook lost his life. See if you can find the Bronze plaque on a rock at the tideline. It's hidden under the branches over there. Most people miss it. And if the waves are pumping spray high into the air on the cliffs further to the West. That area facing the open ocean is EXTREMELY dangerous during rough conditions! Even for onlookers. Over the past 30 years I've had to search for bodies out there. Tourists who ignored the signs. Hawaii shore lore: If it's rough & the rocks are wet you must ask yourself, "what huge beast of a wave came & got everything wet?" Such a monster swell can be at 15 to 20 minute intervals. Lures people into thinking they're safe. However, again, the cove itself is well protected & surprisingly calm even when it's rough "outside". Be safe & have fun. Aloha.

SO AWESOME, quick question, thanks for sharing the video, the question is: how far or how long did u have to swim from the shore to be able to see or spots the dolphins and manta rays? you said that there is a strong current as well, did u find safe to swim that far to view the dolphins? please advise, Im so excited, traveling there soon, hugs

Just to be clear, Dolphins are by no means a guarantee. Anything big that you might see is just a bonus but definitely keep an eye out as they can be seen in this area. This hike is quite difficult so there are other easier places to go with as good of a chance to see dolphins

Hi Jose, this is not a tour. Simply explaining how you can best do this hike/snorkel on your own. There are some great snorkel tours that do take you to this site though. I’ve enjoyed the one with SeaQuest which also visits a few other popular snorkel sites. Hope that helps!

Ya'll please don't fly here for the Captain Cook monument all at once. Traffic is outrageous here lately since everyone wants to see Hawaii 🤦🏽‍♀️ stay home. We don't have the same resources here on the Big Island that are on the mainland.

Visitors arent welcome and are a burden to the Hawaiian people. I learned that when I went and saw many visitors getting treated terribly unkindly. There are other great tropical paradises where the people love sharing their culture and history and they treat visitors amazingly well and with mutual respect.. I'd recommend those destinations.

I am not a British admirer, but Captain Cook was an outstanding navigator, sailor, and cartographer. He was a self-made man (not a gentleman) and not the worst example of a human being. He dealt pretty well with natives in other places, like Tahiti. Moreover, if I am not mistaken, his first lieutenant did not destroy nearby villages with cannon fire after Captain Cook's death. A lot of BS happened later, though.
